I had recently retrofitted a MK6 Golf R instrument cluster into my MK5 Golf GTI. Acquiring the indiidual miscellaneous parts and tools took months as I reside in Jamaica, and the immobilizer tools and the wiring harness (adapter) came from a remote country such as China or Taiwan. I learnt quite a bit during the process as I got my hands dirty in the process and saved myself some money by not having to take it to "professionals" who would charge me more to do the same sort of things I did in the video.
The video is indeed unnecessarily long as ranted through the explanation process, but didn't feel like editing it out.

Nice swap, big upgrade! I wanna change my needles/leds to get the same blue needles. Will something happen if I unplug the cluster, do the work and plug it back again? Do I need some coding/activation after replugging?

No. There will be NO issue unplugging and replugging the same instrument cluster in your car. The time/clock and trip information will reset in the same manner as a dead battery.

Have you made the speedometer work? What about abs? Did you get rid of the abs light? The "ding ding ding" sound... where is it?
@MatthewTaylor3
@MatthewTaylor3 3 жыл бұрын
The speedometer worked without needing any coding as it gets the reading from the ABS (not the transmission). The ABS and steering wheel just needed a test drive to clear. Whenever you change your ECU or instrument cluster,y your ABS unit will factory reset itself as the vehicle's VIN is stored in it (but is lost when you change an immobilizer related component). I had my previous coding backed up in VCDS and OBDeleven, so I restored it manually, and then did a 5-minute test drive which cleared all errors. If you are referring to the alternate speed such as from miles to Kilometers, then I enabled a feature called "alternate speed display". which shows this digitally

Hello, did you just change the front cover ( Plastic ) and installed the Cluster, or did you need to remove all the past and transfer them to the other cluster ? Because i have the same cluster for Jetta mk5 2010 but its in Mileages and i want to change in Kilometers, so i need to find a cluster with KM maybe from a Golf Mk6 or Passat b7 and just swap the front cover, but i don't know if it fits ?
@MatthewTaylor3
@MatthewTaylor3 5 ай бұрын
Once you have a MK5 Golf or Jetta, then you need to get one from a 2010 Jetta just for the front plastic cover and mounting points so it bolts up and looks factory. You discard the rest. You then place that on your MK6 instrument cluster. If you ONLY need to change the units of measure, you would just buy the thin plastic backing behind the needles that have the units you want. You would then use a EEPROM tool like VDOeditor to scale it appropriately so it works correctly. You are on the correct path.

I did "FF" a range of addresses, but I can't tell you if it is the same range as you indicated. Some clusters are different, but the process is the same. Your Autel tool can and will do it. It will even automate the process for you sp you don't have to be too involved in the nerdy bits. I wished I had a IM608, as I'd be providing that service on a daily basis, as I see the use case for it. The unit would basically pay for itself. You are already familiar with the correct set of steps. Please make a BACKUP of both EEPROMs for peace of mind before having fun with the process.

Is it possible going from a 2010 Magnetti Marelli white led with an existing key, to a 2010 VDO 24c32 white led with no existing key? I've already done everything before the erasing keys procedure (I did not make new keys for the VDO, I just copied the original Magnetti KeyID numbers on the VDO but no avail... "Immobilizer Active") -I was expecting my existent keys will work, but no avail... Why is necessary making new keys? How do I match / sync the VDO Immobilizer to car ECU? -I'm doing all this stuff on a bench, and yes, I am able to read, write and verify EEPROM of VDO 24c32 with a programmer with no faults for entering into service mode. Hope you can help. I don't want to do Immo Off... Forgot to say that copying existing Magnetti KeyID numbers on the VDO, the VDO recognizes keys, but not the Immobilizer. VDO shows only "Immobilizer Active", not "No Key" message. Thanks in advance.

I feel honored that you of all folks asked this question. I'm not an expert on the matter. I just did this retrofit to modernize my MK5 Golf GTI's dashboard. I too, thought I could just copy & paste the KeyID from one cluster to another (but the car won't start and stay running for longer than the 1.8 seconds). What I then learnt after doing some reading online (from a Russian site that I forgot to bookmark) is that the immobiliser pill inside the physical key fob also gets unique information written from the instrument cluster itself as well. This then appears to create a mismatch even though you copied the original KeyID. I assume you already know that the transponder is one of those can only be written to once, then it is "locked". This is the reason why you have to get and pair a new key (board or transponder chip) for each instrument cluster you are trying to pair. If I arrive at a working solution otherwise, I'll respond and tag you here.

I will make a video over the weekend when I have the time to do so. Getting the existing PIN for your current vehicle is easy with AVDI/FVCD. Getting the PIN from the the donor instrument cluster is an "All keys lost" situation where you have to first READ the EEPROM data and save it to your hard drive by disassembling the instrument cluster, and connecting directly to the 24C32 or 24C64 EEPROM. You would then "blank" the immobilizer address portion, and WRITE that file to the EEPROM. Temporarily connect to car with the harness and use AVDI to enter Service Mode via OBD. Using the stock file that you would have backed up, you can then see the PIN and all the juicy details in the donor cluster. From there, you can manually pair with your car, then add keys. Do NOT delete any stock keys until after you have completed the pairing of the new one. Edit: I don't know if you saw this site which also shows a similar method. www.auto-diagnosis.org/fvdi-2018-change-golf-6-dash/

I don’t know how it was for everyone else, but the hardest part for me was fitting cluster to the dashboard. The space is so tight, also the adapter takes some space, so cluster didn’t want to slide all the way in. Somehow it went in. Another surprise was my BG steering wheel control module works just fine with mk6 cluster and mk5 mfsw steering wheel. Didn’t need upgrade to CH or CD. To my knowledge BG is highline off course, but 1.3 LIN only. Am I missing something? Controling stereo is also not an issue, I got aftermarket radio and mfsw buttons do the job. Maybe that would be an issue if I upgrade to RCD330? Any input appreciated, thanks

I’m in the process of doing the same swap right now. But I can’t get the newer NEC cluster in to service mode. And every video I’ve been looking at for help has the cluster taken apart for some janky modification internally to the circuit board. Did you have to do this mod as well? I have SVCI 2019 and new transponders. I appreciate any help :-)
@MatthewTaylor3
@MatthewTaylor3 2 жыл бұрын
Yes. I have the SVCI 2018, and the janky modification you see online is the method that you would have to use to get the process "started". I used a "clip" to connect directly to the 8 pins of the 24C64 chip so as not to have to desolder anything. You HAVE TO pull the instrument cluster apart to read the contents of the EEPROM to your PC. Save a backup on your hard drive. Then you would simply "delete" the storage blocks that contain the immobilizer info, then flash that modified state to your cluster. You can then put the cluster together, and reinstall it in the car (I suggest leaving it disassembled until you verify all is working and the car starts and runs) with the 32-pin pigtail harness. You would then actually use SVCI at this point to electronically place the cluster in Service Mode to do the actual process you see in those videos. When you load the original BIN file that you would have backed up, you would see the donor PIN and all that information in which you would selectively overwrite, then finish the process by adding the new key(s)/transponder pills. Exit Service Mode, and the cluster boots as normal. Once all works and the car starts and stays running, you can then put the cluster back together and pat yourself on the back. Edit: I will be doing a video on how to do the initial process (using the clip) in a bit when I get another cluster to pull apart shortly.

If you need to change the actual bulbs, you would have to de-solder the OEM ones and solder the replacement ones. If you just want to change the actual needles from Blue to Red (or vice versa), you would just swap the needles themselves and not trouble the already White LEDs. If you need BLUE needles, you can get them from the Golf-R or VR6 R32 models. If you need Red needles, you would get those from the GTI.

Can you get all the immobilizer info from the car? I’m looking to pickup an extra ecu for a a motor swap. Do you IG?
@MatthewTaylor3
@MatthewTaylor3 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, using a cloned copy of AVDI, I can get the immobilizer information from the existing instrument cluster (which would match that of the existing ECU that is in the car. The new cluster would have to be placed into Service Mode to enter the original immobilizer information to it. If you are doing an ECU swap (and not an instrument swap) then you don't need a new key. If you are just swapping a new ECU for another engine to the car, you would need to know the PIN, MAC, CS, Power Class, and VIN from the donor vehicle. This is easy to get if the donor vehicle is still in one piece (via a tool like AVDI). If the ECU was already removed, then you will need to do this "on the bench" where you would dump the EEPROM contents to a file to be read by suitable software. I've never gotten the immobilizer delete feature to work in AVDI. I don't have an instagram account, but I'll be creating one to post here. The MED9 and MED9.1 ECUs dump easily on the bench, but MED17.x.x needs to be placed in BOOT mode before you can access the tricore memory. This requires opening the metal casing of the ECU, and temporarily attaching some resistors.

@@kelvincheong9234 You are going to need to use the tool you mentioned to READ the PIN, MAC, CS, and power level from your existing cluster or ECU (as they currently match) by placing it is Service Mode). This is initiated by taking your stock one apart (since you have no keys) and reading the EEPROM chip using a programmer, saving this as a BIN file to your computer. You would then use an editor to clear the immobilizer info, then WRITE/FLASH that file back to your stock cluster. You would then partially asemble and attach to your car. You would then use SVCI/AVDI to place the cluser in Service Mode in order to note the items to be transferred to you new cluster (since you say you don't have your keys). You would do the above steps with the replacement cluster, but this time you would WRITE the 4 above mentoned fields to the new one. Before exiting Service Mode, you would simply ADD a new key so you can start the car. Your old keys would be invalid as they are paired with your stock cluster, and can only be written to once.

Is it possible to fit golf 5 gti cluster onto mk6 gti dash, want to attempt to fit golf 5 gti engine BWA onto my golf 6,but mechanic said it would be easier to move the engine with its ECU and cluster
@MatthewTaylor3
@MatthewTaylor3 2 жыл бұрын
The short answer is YES, once you move over the factory wiring harness (that is going to be a tedious process). What is going to be an issue is the MK6 steering wheel control buttons will no longer control the MK5 GTI instrument cluster as it would use the newer BAP protocol, while the MK5 cluster uses the older DDP protocol. What may also be an issue is the MK6 ABS unit would lose its coding, so you would have to back that up first using something like VCDS, OBDeleven, etc. Also note that the BWA ECU does not measure and display BOOST pressure or Oil temperature for display in the instrument cluster or Radio if you use something like P3 Car, PolarFIS, or Kufatec, for displaying current engine data. Since you are going through all this trouble, it means you are trying to move from a stock 1.4L engine to the 2.0T for performance. Don't forget to upgrade both brakes and suspension to match this increase. You might as well change the timing belt on the BWA now that you have it out of the car, and the cam follower, as well as the thermostat under the intake manifold since this is the time you have easy access. To do this hassle, means you want a race car, so you might as well upgrade the fuel pressure relief valve to a higher bar rating, and do at least Audi S3 injectors, and the Autotech fuel pump upgrade for more smiles. At this point, the car is ready for a tune after you have broken your wallet on a K04-0064 turbocharger upgrade 🤣 Please take photos and videos of your swap when done.

It is very important that you also understand that pairing the new instrument cluster requires you to pair a VIRGIN key (blank transponder pill) if you are using the ID-48. The physical key (transponder chip) is bound to the cluster that it was originally bound to. If you are putting a MK6 cluster in your MK5 car (for example), your MK5 key is no longer valid, and a new one (blank Megamos ID-48 pill/chip) would have to be paired to the MK6 cluster so that it now works in your MK5 car. At NO time, should you delete any (old) keys until you can get the car started and running like normal.

Since I have a 2008 Golf GTI, I'd need the physical parts from a MK6 Jetta to have them bolt up natively (although I'd be using the MK6 Golf-R/Golf GTI internal electronics for the cluster. Now what I said about the Passat cluster was that I would have bought that instead for the colored display in the middle if I had to do it all over again, and I realized that the process for swapping everything was so easy. The Tiguan cluster is also really nice too. You can buy the faceplate by itself so you only see MPH. Let me look at those part numbers and get back to you in short order.

@@MatthewTaylor3 Thanks, so it turns out the tiguan cluster wont work since it has electronic parking brake and uses different fuel sensors. I actually just cancelled that order. I decided to order the SCIROCCO MK3 2.0 Petrol cluster which seems to be the closest match. I'm also curious do you get cruise control data on your screen like the newer VW? Like what speed you have your cruise control set to? ps - I Sent you a message via google chat using the email you have listed in the about section if it's easier to chat there.

@@jaredneedell7006 Yes, I did retrofit cruise control in my MK5 GTI years ago. Mine doesn't show the speed that is set. It only shows the fact that the cruise control is working, and the current vehicle speed digitally. It doesn't show what the cruise control is actually SET at. For me, I just mentally remember the digital speed readout when I activate the cruise control. I then know that it will add or subtract 5km/h for every second I keep the PLUS or MINUS button held on the cruise control stalk and it would give me updated SET speed. My car responds quickly, so I just look at the current vehicle speed most of the time to know what the SET speed actually is.

You need to copy, POWER CLASS, MAC, PIN, VIN. When you save this from your MK5 cluster to the MK6 one, you would need to ADD A NEW KEY (and burn a new transponder). Your original MK5 key (transponder pill) will no longer work, as it belongs to your old cluster. You need to buy a new ID48 Megamos transponder, and pair it. You already have the right FVDI to do this task.

@MatthewTaylor3
@MatthewTaylor3 9 ай бұрын
Hello. Your ABS unit WILL reset itselt and lose all coding whenever you connect another ECU or instrument cluster, so make a note of your existing coding to restore later as it WILL be lost. You can’t just copy the raw immo settings to the new cluster as they are different EEPROM and software version. You would transfer the information like the: MAC, Power Class, CS, and VIN. The serial number being a string of zeroes isn't an issue, and can be left that way. You will need a new key fob/transponder pill/ ID-48 pill as your existing one is permenently "married" to your stock instrument cluster. If you got a donor key that came with your new cluster, that can work too. You would just need to swap the key blade to work in your ignition, glove box and driver door.

Which function of the SVCI did you use to program the new transponders?
@MatthewTaylor3
@MatthewTaylor3 2 жыл бұрын
After opening the application and selecting either AUDI,VW,SEAT,Skoda, etc: I selected "Special Functions", then "CAN instruments". Once connected to the car, it should automatically identify the instrument cluster type (so you wouldn't have to make a selection here). You would then click "Load config dump" and select the original EEPROM that you backed up from the donor cluster. You then click "Enter Service Mode by EEPROM dump". The cluster reboots and may show a blank screen this is normal. You then click "READ Conf Data", "Read Mileage",Read Immo data". You can then update the information that you have noted before. SAVE that to the cluster (but do NOT reboot). You can then add the transponder at this point, and reboot (exit service mode) to start the car. Note these steps require you to have made a backup of the cluster, and have another file of the same donor cluster with the immobilizer portion "FF'd" out.

@MatthewTaylor3
@MatthewTaylor3 2 жыл бұрын
@@sebhall9269 I did not have a donor key for the cluster I installed. I had disassembled the cluster, and used a "clip" to read the contents of the EEPROM with a programmer to my laptop, remove the immobiliser portion from the specific address, then write the modified version back to the EEPROM chip. I could then place the cluster in the car, and use AVDI or a similar tool to place it in Service Mode to transfer over the OLD data and add a new key/blank transponder pill. To the best of my knowledge, you can't enter Service Mode without doing some trickery to the EEPROM first since in our case, the ECU and donor instrument cluster weren't initially paired together. If one had a paired donor key with the cluster then entering service mode would be easy at the click of a button.
