I reckon the Ford engineers know it's not the best idea to send the exhaust gases back through the engine, but they were given one task to reduce emissions so that Ford could sell a few more. The clever bit is making the engine last just long enough so that it fails outside of warranty. Then its win win, a van sale and a new engine.

The engines r absolute chocolate. Did an engine on a 15 plate transit 2.2 diesel for exactly what happened with number 3 piston knocky knocky.Replaced it with a reconditioned ending block then bout a year later came in for a knocking noise stripped it down and exactly the same thing number three piston had went bye bye so they scrapped the van. Got an 18 plate transit in the now with 80 odd thousand miles on it and reckon this is what has happened this time again.

Since Toyota no longer makes the best bulletproof vans in the UK anymore and I'm looking for a new one, Ford and PSA Vans are out the door I think I will go for a Mercedes Vito instead. 👍

The first time I did a chain on a 2.2 euro 4 engine (front wheel drive, so plenty of room too) I was knackered after starting half way through the day and forgot to time the bottom end (as the chain had snapped). I remember the satisfaction of pulling the pin on the grenade (tensioner) and the sinking feeling as I spotted the crank locking plate still in the box on the side... 🤦‍♀

Im so glad i got the sprinter with the om642 even with the dodgy 8 mm injector hold down bolt rather than the mk8 transit i was considering.

Our older generation Transit minibus with the supposedly trusty 2.4D jumped a couple of links on its timing chain last week for no apparent reason. Been told it's an engine out and dismantled job. Mind you, it's done 250k so it owes us nothing....

I've seen this happen so many times whilst working for JLR UK, and they always try and blame the problem on the customer and not the product!!!

Absolutely lovin’ what you’re doin’, Al, and especially the way you’re doin’ it - don’t change a single thing! Glad you mentioned the stretch bolts, as I was going to ask! However, you said the timing chain would be ok - cost to Customer aside, would it not be better to change the chain anyway, given that she might have been given a rough ride as a result of the very Religious (Holy) Piston No. 3? Keep ‘em comin’ JCHK

The chain is in really good condition and I can’t see the point in replacing it’s just for the sake of it. Mans having a painful enough month as it is 👍

Hi my friend...could you get the test chart for the injectors from the injector shop... These injectors live at the bottom of the test plan and I think that is the reason for the engine not living long! Hope this helps

As I said in the last video my mate replaced 2 and 3 with 1 and 4 from another feked 2.2. Unbelievable how sh1t that engine is. He got told its usually one of the middle 2 that go. Don't seem to matter if driven gentle or wragged. You can do two DI engines in the time to fix it.

Emission control systems have made engines overly complex, the only real winners are the manufacturers. I feel sorry for the guy this happened to, do the right thing and you get screwed.

Is this the same engine they used in the Mark 7 transit? 2.2 turbodiesel? Or is this a different one? Sweating a bit coz I just bought one and can not afford to have this happen to me.

My mate had a similar thing with a diesel mondeo years ago, burnt no.3 piston, turned out it was caused by a weeping injector, dripping whilst the engine was off. Could this be caused by something similar....?

Could well be Al, Ford injectors havent been great for years now. And not getting any better, don't get me started on their bloody wet belts either, they're an even worse idea. I'll stick to my 1995 Mitzi Pajero 4m40, 146k, still on its original injectors, never fails to start on the button, even in minus 12'c. Old motors are so much more reliable

Back in the 1960’s Ford built a 10 year life cycle into their vehicles by choice. Why make them last forever as then nobody would buy new vehicles. Just look around when you are driving, you don’t see many Fords over 10 years old on the road these days because they are “life expired”. Go back to the 1970’s and five year old cars were literally falling apart.

We have a 2014 Transit 460 minibus with the 155bhp 2.2 Puma engine, 25k miles! What should we do to prevent this? Good idea to get 4 new injectors? Have a specialist test the injectors? Thanks for a great video.

Is there a reason. Why number 3 piston is most likely to fail cause recirculated crap first point of entry hot point stress or injector problem. Still. Its not a good advert for reliability

Will you be taking this for a remap, apparently there's an ecu fault that causes the overfuelling rather than an injector fault... But also the injectors are poo too!!

Over fueling needs remap replacing all injectors and pistons gives you another 30.000 miles then bang again then take it out on the mechanic blame him

From of what I heard off the melting pistons is caused by over fueling you need to get remap done before drive it we had 3 blown up all under 70 .000 miles but non since however it's early days but the mileage is going up and repairs is down PS Don't get the ford remap it's the same as you have (Transit customer 30 years )

Last recon engine with fitting and some overhauled injectors came to around 5k so this is the cheaper and in my view better option. I recon we’ll be out of it around 2 ish and know exactly what we’ve got engine wise if that makes any sense 👍

@@6DDIESELSDorset I’d say a 2 year lease on a new one and kiss it good bye with say 40k on it is a better idea unless you can stomach £2000 for a rebuild and a loss ofvt(e van for 3 weeks so hire one l I’d say there’s a school of thought a 25 year old minter with a proper engine is a better idea as a stand by

Hi all looking for some help/ advice I have limp mode and engine service now lights only comes on only when driving on motorway, I have installed refurbished turbo myself, had a local garage install brand new genuine Ford ECU and still having same issue when on motorway only garage now want to install a genuine Ford turbo at £1000 is there anything else I can check/ clean first as it drives fine on normal roads codes are P0299 and P2563. 2.2 RWD minibus 2015
