Yeah Motorola phones have been awesome lately, I recently got a 2021 Moto Edge 20 Pro which was about £750 at release but it was discounted to £350 in the September back to school sale. It was amazing with a fast chipset unlike this phone and it has really good build quality with glass on the back. I would recommend definitely getting the old flagship phone over a new cheap phone. As you mentioned though they do get less software updates but if you get a phone from like last year it has just about as much updates as a new budget phone. Edit: thx for the likes!

I have a Redmi 8, which has 4GB Ram and SD 439 chipset and it's much faster than this phone considering it's a budget phone from 2019 and i also use a custom GCam Port instead of the stock camera to get better quality and extra features like night mode and such. And BTW the night works amazingly albeit of course there's some noise but it's still much better than budget phones these days.

I just recently bought the Umidigi a13 pro 5g for $156. That was a flash sale. Price was like $219 I believe. It's dropped to about $175. It has the Dimensity 700, 5150 battery, and 8gb of Ram and 128gb storage. It also has a 1080p display. 2 updates when I got it to put it on the June 2022 security patch. Not one update since though, which like Marquez says, tends to be one of the main issue with these budget phones. Motorola usually updates better than this though. I think I may start going with the older mid-range or flagships after this though. Phone works pretty good for a budget phone, but it's like a 2nd or 3rd to use and could never be my daily driver. It's a good all around budget phone though.

This is an interesting video, especially since I would love to see more budget and midrange options reviewed. However, I think there are two important points missed. First, is yes, at the absolute rock bottom price of $169, this is a slow phone. But move up to the low-$200s, and there are some options with the much faster Dimensity 700 and 5G that feel much MUCH better. The second point in regards to new versus used phones, is that you simply don't know how an older phone was used. The battery may well be significantly degraded. If you can't afford to spend a lot of money, a new phone, even a $169 new phone will likely last a lot longer than a used phone of the same price before you start having hardware problems.

Sadly many phones today don't support 5G or VoLTE so they are now worthless... That's the issue with buying used. You need to find something that will have good connectivity and hopefully some software update...
@JohnScigulinsky Жыл бұрын
The thing about software updates is that if you're at least a bit tech savvy, you can use LineageOS or a similar AOSP mod to prolong the life of an older flagship or even midranger. LineageOS got my Lenovo P2 way past its prime and it was definitely faster than new super-cheap phones. Unless your phone has some specific feature (such as Samsung Dex) I'd always consider switching to an AOSP mod rather than going for a new phone.

i have been buying budget phones for years. my last 3 phones were all under 200 bucks and all of them were more than good enough. had the moto g6, galaxy a12 and a13. long story short: camera is meh, but takes pictures. battery life was always great. more than fast enough for everyday apps, though sometimes annoying with games. headphone jack is always a must for me. fingerprint scanners worked like a charm.... they did everything i needed. so why pay hundreds more, just to get a better camera? ... also, the 3 times shaking to turn on the flashlight on the moto g6 is sorely missed :D

The only drawback with the A13 5G (I have one) is the 4GB of ram. It stutters and is slow at times, but it is s very solid phone for the price overall.

I wasn't into smart phones, but apps so prevalent today I felt like a 2nd class citizen. I bought a Nokia G42 5G at £150 which is so functional makes me wonder why someone would pay £1000 for a phone. My guess is its a matter of diminishing returns as you move up market.

I've found the G series, mainly the G Stylus series, to be pretty good for the price. My nephew has had two of them over the years. I've been pleasantly surprised by the performance for the price.
@PinkAgaricus Жыл бұрын
I've had my own problem with that model, mostly in regards to the WiFi connectivity. I'm close in range to it, dang it, but when the WiFi receiver on the phone decides to be moody it disconnects from WiFi. There was even times I unlocked into a WiFI disconnected Stylus and had to manually reconnect. It might be just me having bad luck with that model, since the previous 2021 version just gave up and died after a while (battery issue), I think not even half a year later. I have an initial model (2019/2020) that suffered from spicy pillow syndrome, but I think that could be partially due to abuse. I'm still using the working one because the Moto G 5G's screen made me realize how big my hands are, because it made a game I played unplayable, and the stylus' screen is just big enough so that the heels of my hands stay off the screen. That 0.5 of an inch really made a difference. Besides the WiFi problem (possibly isolated), I agree it's great for what it is.

@@dannyclub09 yes, my wife and I had the original Moto G. It was an excellent phone, one of my favorites. My nephew got the Moto G Stylus a couple years ago. He got it unlocked at Best Buy for $179. It was a pretty solid phone, especially for that price. No I don't think they're as good as they used to be, but if you can pick up the Stylus variants for $200 or less, I think they're pretty solid options for that price.

I purchased the OnePlus 7 Pro just about a week before the 8 was launched, nearly three years ago. It is still my daily phone. I'd like to upgrade, but at this point there is no reason. Unlike any premium Samsung or HTC I've purchased in years past, this phone is still perfectly viable. Even the battery still holds a charge very much like it did when it was new. No phone I've had previously ever had a battery that performed this well. I read yesterday that OnePlus did announce the end date for 7T and 7 Pro updates. That's really disappointing considering how incredible this phone still performs. Having worked for a major carrier from 2013-2018, I never experienced a phone with this type of longevity (the S4 was close, as I saw that phone still being used over three years after launch). Part of this is due to the rapid rise in mobile tech during those years, but since 2018 that increase in technology hasn't been nearly as steep. I predicted that the 7T and 7 Pro would stand the technology test of time because OnePlus packed this device with tech that other manufacturers hadn't bought into yet; specifically RAM and refresh rate. I guess that bet paid off. I assume I'll be forced to upgrade in the near future and that's a shame. This 7 Pro has been a BOSS and I'll hate to see it go.

The software update should definitely be more of a consideration the more you spend, the ZenFone has only 2 years software updates but I've heard the argument doesn't matter as long as it works but this shouldn't be the case when you're spending that much. It's definitely an important factor but also depends on apple Vs android too, apple could kill off your second hand product if too old too. But the second hand market is definitely a great place to shop.

imma be honest here, I HATE firmware updates, my iPhone 12 still has the firmware it came with - has less features, might be less secure, but it runs as smooth as it did day one. I for a fact know that the day I update this thing itll feel old and slow, like if I could get all the security updates without the shit ton of features that will now make it slow, thatll be awesome not gonna lie.
@superiortoall22 Жыл бұрын
@@rehanniazi6754 it’ll help with bugs and flaws in the OS; however what’s really important is the security updates. Motorola does like 2 years or something awful for security so that means your phone is at risk of catching malware.

Sometimes newer software has issues older software doesn't. The niche group I'm in, retro game emulation, doesn't want to update software that much because a lot of the newer versions of android messed up scoped storage for the major emulation apps. If retroarch literally can't see files on my sd card, I'm limited to the internal storage, which might be taken up by other things. Android 10 doesn't have this problem, but Android 11 does (or did, I haven't checked for a patch).

Sure. But there are zero sercurity issues with emulating old games.

I suffered with this phone for a month. DON'T DO IT! It's laggy beyond belief, it can't even keep up with typing out messages. After the second week of owning it apps would start randomly freezing for minutes at a time, and then after they became unfrozen I would get a notification that the app wasn't responding, so even the crash reports were laggy. I found most of the time I was interacting with my phone I was idle waiting for it to launch apps or catch-up. I would say I spent more time on my phone and got less done which is super frustrating.
