No they aren’t. You’re buying overpriced archaic hardware. Not everyone needs a flagship, you can still buy an old flagship new, even as old as the $120 S10e, FROM SAMSUNG, and get equal to better performance than this piece of trash. The A series is there to force you into incremental upgrades and to push you into higher price brackets year after year. It’s the definition of anti-consumer.

A series would be amazing to buy if last generations S series didn't exist, S21 fe is going for cheaper than A 54 everywhere rn, and in good conscience, I cannot recommend anyone to buy a inferior phone. Android phones generally have a very mediocre processor, it's not as obvious when the device is new but after a year mid range android start to stutter nd suffer. Buying last year's high end is still always a better bet for smoother experience.

I tried the A54 a couple of days ago and was absolutely astounded at how good it is for the price. It almost feels exactly like the S23 be it the design, the display or the software. Even the camera is good enough for the price. Can't think of any reason why any normie should spend $1000+ on a phone these days. Kudos to Samsung, Nothing and Motorola for giving us good midrange phones.

They are bought eventually 6-8 months later over online sales. 2-Its heavily eating the share of A50s/70s when at sale 3-The basic model of the premium S series also gets affected since everyone prefers FE over the basic. All in all, although it sells, it harms 2-3 major models of the company. The difference between the older and recent is you can specifically tell android exactly how much storage to allocate on recent android phone. Also using storage as RAM doesn't give decent performance since the memory speed of storage is way much slower than actual RAM

It doesn't feel like flagship really, incomparably worse screen, with both worse colors and *much* less bright gives it away instantly. Camera, speakers, feeling in the hand, speed of the phone in demanding apps, multitasking, etc. Flagships are a different world, and it feels instantly in every possible way, as soon as you pick it up before even unlocking the phone, which everyone can see in a random phone carrier store with phones displayed. That doesn't mean midrange phones are necessarily bad, but to say it feels like flagship (especially to mention games where some games have literally half the fps) is wrong.

@@NiohNiohYT You couldn't be more wrong. The A54 actually feels very much like a flagship. This is also due to the better workmanship with Gorilla Glass on the front and back. And what you say about the display is nonsense. The specialist magazine chip measured the display of the A54 at over 1400nits. And you should take a look at the extensive measurement tests before you tell such nonsense. Just 3-4 years ago, the values of the A54 were hardly achievable even for flagships. If you think that flagships are a different world, you have to use such a smartphone excessively nowadays to see the differences. You should check out the direct, real-time comparisons between the S23+ and the A54 here on KZbin. There is nothing that the 95% of normal users would notice. And then there's the fairy tale that you could already tell in the shop or when you first set it up - it works exactly the same as with the S models. However, since the 21 series, none of them have had a memory card extension. And how many S models with eSim/Dualsim function PLUS simultaneous memory card use are there? I'll tell you: the A54 is all alone on the market. The competition doesn't even have that. By the way, I've always had S-models, but now the middle class has gotten so good that only posers buy an S-class just to show off.

But for the rest, I am pretty happy with the phone. Got it for free when prolonging the contract and I am not hanging on the phone that much that I would ever need more. I liked how easy was to transfer everything from my old A14... just plug the USB cable, set a few things and in 10 minutes I had all my photos / videos / programs from the old one in the new one. I have used the 2021 model of the A5X series, the Galaxy A52s 5G for the past year or so. I have also used the Asus Zenfone 8 with a Snapdragon 888 SoC and I have to admit the A52s still remains my most comfortable, most usable device I've ever used. Sure, after a year of use it has a tendency to stutter a little bit if you reboot it, most app loading times take a fraction of a second longer and it is overall not quite as fast as a modern Snapdragon 8-series SoC but it comes damn near close. The A5X series displays with the 120Hz AMOLED screens are absolutely gorgeous with high contrast, amazing saturation (often much better than the double MSRP Zenfone 8), it still comes with a headphone jack AND it has amazing battery life. While the cameras aren't world record breaking by any means, they're serviceable and are decent enough if you don't rely on them too much. Overall, I think Samsung checks many, many boxes with the A52, A52s and A54 series (A53 was lack luster though with a weaker SoC).

It's smooth the 120hz refresh rate works and feels the same as my S23+, sometimes i think why would you buy a flagship if you almost can have the same experience with a midrange device like this for half of the price?

i just traded in my A51 for the new A54. Given the lack of availability of the oppos, vivos, nothings of the east Samsung has got a great option in this phone in the mid range segment. i loved my a51, only had to switch it because the android updates were not coming fast enough and my work email kept getting blocked because of that. Also, pleasantly surprised to use 5G in this range, pretty quick. Can't wait to install a custom kernel when it gets old to improve performance.

Great video! But I think one aspect Marques missed out is the overall longevity of the device and how long Samsung would support the midranger in terms of OS and security updates. As of time being, Samsung promises to support the A series for 4 major OS updates and 5 years of security updates just like the flagships. That being said, while more OS upgrades is great, the issue with mid-range phones is that their chipsets don't hold up that good in terms of OS upgrades compared to flagships. Usually in midrange phones, you'll notice significant slowdowns after updating to new OS because the chipsets simply could not efficiently process and optimize the new features that come with the newly installed system. So, if you tend to keep your phone for 4-5 years, it is a good idea to invest in a flagship as a form of future-proofing. But again, like the video said, if you dont care about the phone having performance issues, then go for the A54.

"efficiently process and optimize the new features that come with the newly installed system"? False, this is not true. Absolutely nothing to do with "process and optimize". Also new OS often run actually better than the old ones. Also the logic makes no sense since for the price of a single flagship you can buy 3 decent midrangers which will last more than single flagship, even when it comes to OS upgrades. Future-proofing makes absolutely zero sense with smartphones (and the most other things too).

@gibowski9206

@@NiohNiohYT what are you talking about? I assume you know that operating systems (OS) are softwares and are different to chipsets which are part of the hardware of the phone. Yes, OS upgrades are usually better than its previous versions because of the improved features, processing and computation. However, software performance also depends on whether the hardware of the phone can load it faster than its previous versions. Admit it, midrange chipsets are limited compared to flagship chipsets - hence the term midrange. There are reasons why Samsung Galaxy S10 are still performing smoothly to this day compared to Samsung midrange phones that were released in 2019. Flagship chipsets can still perform after so many OS updates simply because its more efficient and powerful hardware allows it to do so.

People also prolong the life of their phones by rooting them, the only downfall is not being able to use banking apps, phones like Xiaomi come with their own security app installed so security updates ain't an issue for them and as for os updates, I no longer care because the updates are not a huge difference, just minor improvements

A lot of camera reviews seem to miss the benefit of better cameras. They go in search of pixel peeping, colour tone and zoom value or 4k @60fps checklist features and take still landscape images to test everything which is fine but isn’t useful or what I researched when evaluating camera performance. The big difference that made me jump for a flagship over a midrange was having children. Needing to open the camera app cold and instantly hit the button to capture the moment, or take 10 back to back shots to get the one I wanted as you can’t wait for the perfect moment. Even more complicated, indoor low light with a slight zoom so as not to disturb what you are trying to capture while the target is moving. Even flagships fall short here with post processing getting in the way. Back to video, sure it can do 4k but tbh with storage and compression when sharing I’m only ever gonna shoot at 1080 or 720. Taking long shots can seriously cause the phone to heat up and despite the flak Sony took for the overheating warning, it didn’t drop frames. Oneplus (and a few other manufacturers) dropped the bit rate or dropped frames which was noticeable during playback. Ironically it was the non flagship phones with their cooler running midrange processors fared better.

@@hundredfireify Modern point and shot cameras haven’t kept up at all with smartphones. My wife is a teacher and still purchases one for work purposes (a lot of reasons a smartphone can’t be used) and while yes they are better for zoom and capturing certain shots there are way more compromises than a smartphone camera. The biggest being they take even longer to turn on and shoot. Even writing images to SD card has random moments of hanging and pausing. After 6 months, that is even more noticeable. Never mind convenience in sharing and the last killer be it high end or a cheap point and shoot, they are pretty much completely broken within 2 years. EDIT: I would honestly love to see point and shoot get a lot of love. The technology is out there to make a great camera that is affordable and allow me to stick to a more budget smartphone.

What's the benefit of a better camera if the software is messing up the whole image. I rather (which I do atm) run a midrange phone with a mid camera and have a whole ass dslr if I want to take pics. Sure it's bulky and all, but for how much better the pics are it's a no brainer.
@Javadamutt

@@Daniel-dj7fh Been there and found that while I was there I wasn't really. I was usually off to the side not actually engaging with the moment. Try turning up to parents group with an SLR for example and you are a right tool ruining the activity for others around you. Never mind the instinct to to fiddle with the shot rather than just capture the memory. Add to that Lugging around a change bag (even having it swinging from your neck), a camera bag, other random things required or not etc a SLR was a cumbersome pain in the hole more often than not. Doing parental duties with extra stuff while you are off to the side there comes a point when you look at yourself and ask why you are doing any of it. I'd take a phone camera if it allows me to be part of the family anyday As for the software it isn't exclusively a midrange problem. Chinese phones in general can be very aggressive on face smoothing right up and down the line. Others don't ruin the image per se but try to "enhance" the image especially in low light to make up for poor hardware. 90% of the time it works sometimes it is just waaay off. Each to their own

I think you should dedicate at some a small segment to the radio performance between devices. They are not identical. Different frequency combinations, carrier aggregation combinations, and antenna performance mean speeds could be halved on a cheaper phone (especially uplink), and one phone may have nonexistent weak signal performance while another may be usable. Screens and cameras don't mean anything if a phone performs poorly as an actual communication device. I know the Pixel devices I've tested only support 3/4 global positioning networks while the A54 and up support all 4, which is another thing that will make a difference out in the field besides mobile network performance.

The performance category also has a separating factor when it comes to power user tasks (which are a part of the consumer base that will buy the flagship phones). The desktop mode (Samsung Dex) is something that the S23 Ultra does at a rate that could replace a mid ranger laptop. The A54 isn't going to do that. Also, the productivity functionality of the S-Pen is something that CAN NOT go understated. Using the S-Pen to translate text, write math formulas in Microsoft Math, magnify images, etc are all things that make this a great device for working. You're not going to do that on the A54. You can also edit footage very well in apps like LumaFusion on the S23 Ultra. There are levels to the performance category.
