I love how he sits in a sweet spot of age for these kinda videos. It makes it pretty amusing. He's old enough to have a pretty good idea of what he's looking at, maybe when he was young some of these things were around but being phased out. He's still young enough though that he still has to figure them out on the fly. I'm 36, and I'd say around that age is right there in that transition period from analog to digital life styles. We made calls on rotary phones because that's what some of our family or we had in our homes. We are pre internet, but still grew up with it. We lived in the time where change was novel and interesting, and lived through the shift of it becoming expected and normal. He's right on the other side of that shift where it's fun to see his reactions. I played a demo Virtual Boy in Sears when it was new, and remember thinking it was just the dumbest thing ever spend money on. It's kinda cool in retrospect regarding it's place in history, but man in the time it was bad.

But, the understanding of experiencing emotions can directly influence the transmission of them through thought. Like how I have no idea how the beaches of Australia feel, but have an idea from my experience of beaches elsewhere. More interestingly is how this kind of tech can improve the lives of those with disabilities. Not just to enhance humans, but help them, too. Answering machines. One of the best features they ever put on the answering machine was the "toll saver". The feature before this was the ability to check messages remotely. You'd call your own number, enter a passcode, and then you could hear your recent messages. But if you were on a trip, that meant spending money on a long distance call to check messages. With toll saver, the answering machine would pick up after 4 rings when there were no messages, but 2 rings if there were new messages. So if it rang 3 times you hang up and don't pay for a long distance call. Picture phone. I was a kid back in 1973 and we went on a field trip to the Buhl Planetarium in Pittsburgh. They had the coolest science stuff there, and a really awesome miniature train room. In 1973 they had a picture phone. The screen was tiny, and in grainy black and white, but it worked. They had one here and another over there. I could make faces with my classmates over a real picture phone like on The Jetsons (only nowhere near as cool). The sound wasn't hooked up but they were going to fix that next week. Also, by 1975, every house in the country will have picture phones! So how cool is that? Needless to say, the 1975 thing never happened.

Hyperconnectivity is the one tech that makes me most nostalgic for the past. "When you weren't home, you would not get the call. And you had no idea someone called!" And you know what? It was fine. We were fine. More than fine, there was a general sense of having your own space, a world of solitude that you controlled. When I retire, I'm going back to that world.

Opening up KZbin to see a new retro episode really is top tier. Watching this on a 4k TV in the lounge and you forget you're on KZbin ✨

We take so much things especially tech for granted. Really inspires me to work on something that will be helpful for the upcoming generations.

I am terrified by that last one. Literally a mind-reading device. In the not too distant future I'm going to have to wear a tin-foil hat everwyhere to make sure nobody sneaks up behind me and scans my brain for my bank details.

honestly kinda surprised he's excited for this one rather than terrified, at one point we compromise on the quality of being human itself and get to a point where we realise that maybe it's fine to not have instant access to all the information on the internet; does seem like something out of a movie, but it's apparently not

The telepathy thing is scary. The first thing I thought of is how people can be harassed by others. If the harasser doesnt need to verbalize anything, there are no social consequences to deter them from committing that harrassment. Idk scary for women and poc and lgbt

What always fascinated me with phones was something before my time, the party line. Basically sharing your phone line with the whole neighborhood. Just like with home phones you can pick up the phone and hear your family members conversation, except on a larger scale. 3 or 4 neighbors could all pick up the phone and listen to the conversation someone down the street is having.

These series really make me appreciate how much we've accomplished so far.. And makes me think of how far we are yet to reach in like... 20 years from now.. Amazing Ok.. I actually dropped the top paragraph before Marquez mentioned it.. Well... Let's see what the future holds.. 🥂🙂

Never thought I'd get emotional watching a Marques Brownlee video but I was an answering machine technician in the 80's (yes, they were a big deal back then, especially for small businesses). The PhoneMate was one of the machines I repaired, usually OGM issues. We always got a lot of machines after a lightening storm which was always a good day for my boss. We also imported and serviced one-piece, cordless, and antique phones. My boss had this idea that phones were the future. However, before the future arrived, he sold the company. Guy always had good ideas but bad timing.

Something to be said about a tech “expert” stumbling over stuff that was second nature to us older people. Love these shows.
