There’s no ability to use it without an internet connection .. absolute madness as it’s just a speaker connected via a cable. There is no physical reset button on the device, the plug is hardwired to the back of the device, it won’t reconnect and the only option is to unplug it.. and the plug is behind a built in outlet that I’ll need to disassemble to get into it. You can pretty much say goodbye to that functionality 5 or so years after updates were dropped for that device. The oldest piece of tech I use is my keyboard on my home desk setup, I use an IBM Model M13 buckling spring keyboard manufactured in 1998, although the Model Ms actually go back much older than that to the mid 1980s. It's amazing to type on and is by far my favourite keyboard I own. It works perfectly on any modern PC or Mac just as long as you get an active PS/2 to USB adapter which I have. Currently typing this comment on it using an Apple Silicon Mac and it works great. It lacks a Windows key, so you do have to change the modifier keys in macOS to make it work but that's easy to do and tbh it's worth it for the excellent typing feel the buckling springs provide. I have a few other older things in my setup, I use a pair of Logitech 2.1 speakers that are about 20 or so years old that still work great, as well as a Sony video camera I use for my own KZbin videos I've owned for almost 10 years that still looks, sounds and functions perfectly as if it were brand new. My rule is that I'll only replace something if it breaks or is somehow no longer compatible anymore.

I've created some rules for myself when aproaching tech, first, other than laptops, cameras, TWS (only earbuds) and smartphones, I never buy tech that depends on non removable batteries or batteries altogether; Second, if it needs batteries I'll buy the models that allow industry standard-easy to find batteries (thats why I have a 7 year old xbox controller over the ps5 one, for exemple); Third I never buy recently launched products, I always try to wait 1 year at least, either to get a promotion or to see if the product trully lives to the expetations; Fourth, if I just desire a tech, and I don't really need it, I'll buy used or wont buy it at all (I have a kindle diyng in my shelf, not because I don't read, but because I've been prefering analog books); Finally I only replace stuff when it really needs to be replaced; Those rules keept me in a health relationship with tech and allowed me to enjoy them and not be mastered by them.

My two MacBook Retinas are 7 and 8 years old. Stable like a rock. I love and need those ports. Keyboards are a pleasure to use and I also think if a laptop is too thin and light, it's harder to use. Never got viruses, though the OSs are "outdated".

I'd argue this isn't a case of old tech being better than new since we have many objectively better options on the market in 2024 for each of these categories. I think a better way to frame things is that these are categories that age incredibly well, as long as you are smart about avoiding obsolescence (e.g. buying headphones that aren't reliant on some proprietary app for its features).

I had a friend who went through those Apple keyboards like they were Pringles. Though he was a harsh master with his tech. His stuff used to break a lot! I'm still using a first generation iPad as an e-book reader. I should probably put a new battery in it at this point. I had a couple of iPods that were wrecked when their batteries swelled up, and a third that has now had its second battery fail. The third party batteries are nothing like the OEM ones for longevity.

I'm still a bit clueless what to do when I cannot use the laptop anymore, e.g. due to dropped app support (tried OCLP patch, but it failed sadly).

Linux! I just bought a 2012 13 inch Macbook Pro off of a friend. once i upgrade the RAM from 4gb to 16gb and turn the HDD into an SSD, I'll have a pretty reliable beater laptop for doing things that don't require... "power" like having extra chrome tabs open for things I'm researching/studying, or burning images to SD Cards/USB Flash Drives. (I'm currently MURDERING my M2 Pro Macbook Pro with so many Chrome tabs I don't need.) The CD/DVD Drive is a plus too, I can easily rip any media and put it on my NAS. For anything related to older versions of macOS, I have a 2007 Macbook Pro running Snow Leopard. I could also get a 2009~2012 iMac and have it specifically run Lion/Mountain Lion

If it works, don't replace it! My home computer setup uses altec lansing speakers from the 90's, and an old conference room ClearOne microphone for discord calls, and my keyboard and mouse is a 2007 logitech Wave. Even my computer itself is still chugging along 6ish years later. A lot of hardware takes ages before becoming obsolete.

@@montaguebarnabasltd yes, seriously. No cap. Paid 176€ for the first two, the other two cost me 195€ with shipping. Buying just one of these is dumb, they sound so much better in tandem. 4 of em will probably be overkill, but fk it, theyre cheap as hell and and Ive got the money and I just really wanna know how is it going from 2 to 4, cuz going from 1 to 2 made a friggin massive difference. But I also gotta say that theyre far from perfect. They seem to fail quite a bit. Tis well documented online. I know this cuz my 1st one failed for 1day after I unplugged it from the wall one morning. It randomly started working next day tho, good ever since. So I gotta say: buyer beware But the main thing with these is that they cant replace a decent soundsystem on their own. In my case, im running them together with Harman Kardon Onyx Studio 3 and 4-s. And these HK-s have much better tweeters. The HK-s cost only 50€ a piece, used. Theyre 60W, 6speakers in one unit. The zeppelin excels in good bass, and being pretty damn loud, but you cant really have both at the same time. The bass starts to drop off after past 60% volume, so you gotta choose. I choose a little more bass and let my HK-s take care of the loud high ends. They compliement each other very well, indeed. With 4x bassy zeppelins, maybe I wont have to stress about finding 2x cheap used subs anymore. They might just be enough on their own, hehehe

Still using Apple Mac Pro Mouse Black for its design and beauty, a 2011 Thinkpad X220 (still getting updates for Win10 - Apple could learn from that), Harman Kardon Sound Sticks (10 years old.), a Nikon D2x (2005), camera lenses from the 1990s, a bunch of peripherals that use USB-A, which is far from dead… the list goes on. Very few people use just one generation of tech, especially if the older stuff was expensive and just works. Old tech that I’d love? A Beosound 3200.

I have a pair of Parrots 3.0 and although the touch gestures work close to flawlessly, and the removable battery, I can’t say I like them anymore. The faux leather is destroyed, which includes the pads but also the outer ear cups and head band. I suppose this is all fine, I could perhaps swap the pads and live with the outside looking all messed up and leaving flakes everywhere, but the Zik 3 came with a soft pouch not a solid case, so for transport I would make the headband small. Over time, it wore down and now it does not hold its size and eventually the plastic headband (it is only metal where you can see, none of the headband is metal on the inside where it (imo) matters. After 4 years it required so much tape to just not crumble everywhere. Can't say I recommend them

If anything, newer keyboards have gotten worse as they were cheepend. As far as the laptop goes, it has really good I/O for my need, an expresscard slot to expand it even further, great repairability, and an excellent keyboard.

I went and bought a used set of Audeze Penrose headphones last summer. Knew that the battery would eventually be poo poo, but the deal was just too good to pass on. That and I'd JUST gotten into planar magnetic videos on KZbin 🤫 lol. Anywho, earlier this year i hit up their customer support to see what (if anything) could be done to revive these to their former heights of glory. They told me there's nothing they could do as the company (cuz they were well beyond their warranty period).... Buttttttt, the kind man on the phone explained how easy it would be to do a replacement, told me details about the battery, and told me how the part would be easy to find on AliExpress. Just thought I'd share so that folks can be aware that companies sometimes actually do think about us folks who plan to use their products for quite some time. And Audeze (at least prior to the Sony deal) was one of them. And yes people, i found the battery and successfully completed the surgery 💪😎 ..and ill keep doing it for as long as i can find suitable parts.

My better argument/position is that you should NEVER throw out tech. Even when you upgrade and your old thing has a few small defects, if it is usable, it's worth keeping. Nostalgia, value (some tech becomes expensive when it expires from the norms), a back up use, etc. Apple type companies are just the king of convincing you that your old thing needs replaced. It doesn't.

That now uses a DVI-to-HDMI lead (7.5 metres long), which connects to my old HD TV. Works brilliantly for displaying photos on iphoto; watching DVDs, and playing music on Itunes. When the iTunes visualiser is on, it's stunning on my tv. So ahead of its time.

Funny this shows up in my recommended after I’ve spent the better part of a week watching with amazement as a 2011 MacBook Air runs rings around a laptop half its age and with twice the power and RAM… I think one of the oldest bits of tech I still use semi-regularly is a 4th gen iPod Nano. It’s a hand me down because I hung onto a Sony Walkman MP3 player so long that my sister’s old iPod ended up representing an upgrade. And I refused to upgrade to an iPod Touch because I honestly don’t like devices having touch screens when other input mechanisms make more sense so I’m sticking with the click wheel until the thing dies.
