The problem with reviewers is that they don't stick to any device for 6+ months to figure out what long-term usage is actually like, which is far more important for a smartphone. I switched to Zenfone based on these recommendations, and what started off as a fairy tale has become a nightmare 6 months later with Asus' crappy software reeling its head; the device is sluggish, lags when typing anything and constantly freezing and crashing. It's barely usable anymore, forcing me to reset the device, which every Android user knows is an immense hassle. I have S23 Ultra and I am also a photographer. This is the first time I can say I'm pleased with a phone camera (never tried iPhone). I've also been surprisingly pleased with the quality out of the S23 series, I'm on the base model since I like small phones. I'm not sure how you've been shooting with it, but my tip for getting the most out of it is actually to skip the stock app raw mode and even the expert raw mode since those "raw" files are still baking some sharpening and processing into the files. To get the most "raw" like photos (that actually feel like I'm editing a raw from my ILC) is either a GCam port or the photo mode with MotionCam. Bringing those files into Lightroom and it's magical, doesn't feel like I'm using a phone. Granted... they're still limited in dynamic range and the sharpness isn't going to stand up to true glass, but I'm super impressed.

Very fair assessment & balanced choices! As an S23U owner, I feel it deserved the best large phone award, but also agree with the iPhone 15 Pro getting the win for best camera phone; its snaps are richer (Samsung often overdoes the HDR, & pics come out too flat) and overall, colours tend to be more accurate, while video is still much better. The S23U's zoom range might make it more versatile (thus the honorable mention), but the iPhone yields more consistent and reliable results

Great video, as always. Some really great picks there. My phone of the year is the S23 Ultra. Outside of the price, for some, it’s an easy recommendation. And it just works. Samsung appears to have found their formula. I guess that’s why it feels like their latest crop of phones are ‘boring’ now. They experimented a lot in the early days and have now found their stride. And the fact that they’ve invested so much in leading the foldables charge shows that they still have the appetite and ability to push boundaries

After they mocked Apple about the "Your phone upgrade shouldn't be a downgrade", they will drop the 10x zoom lens for 5x.. But they did the same after mocked Apple for no charger in the box, no SIM card skot etc.. and their next model comes with no charger and with no SIM card slot.. Seems they doesn't even remember what they did a few years ago (after the mock video they should be sure not to downgrade anything ever..)

Great video. Would like to hear more about the concept phones that never came. Sorry for this criticism but the sound effect used when showing each of the categories was terrible. It sounded like a robot powering down which kills the vibe. It makes sense in the Bust of the Year category but the rest need something more uplifting. Even just playing that sound in reverse.

I've got to say, I bought the S23 Ultra 5 minutes after it was announced with no hesitation, and it's been the best phone I've ever owned. I use it as a personal phone and as my business phone and I can do everything I do when sitting at my Windows PC. I've never looked back to iPhone. I just feel like this Samsung is truly the over and above phone. I know it's right because I've never said "I wish it had.." "thats annoying" etc. It's seriously the best battery also, I've seen more than 48 hours out of this thing! All I can say is get ready for the S24!

So in your Fairphone 4 review you made a pledge to mention sustainability and repairability in each smartphone review (I don't think this has happened). Don't you think it would make sense to talk about this stuff for the Smartphone of the year 2023 as well? Even if the list of potential candidates is small, it makes a huge difference for the companies who actually try to achieve something if they get coverage.

The S23 Ultra's sustained dominance and commendable performance even a year after its release are truly remarkable. It's evident that other phones, if they got released in January 2023 would likely face tough competition and might struggle to surpass its success.

Good picks! Would love to see if you can work in some more representation for cheap phones and sustainable/longevity phones. Everything's getting way more expensive, but at least now companies are starting to support phones for longer and becoming more consumer friendly when it comes to repair and planned obsolescence.
@BrendanBrown110 ай бұрын
Been out of the phone loop for like 2 years, but I have to say that it's so cool how much all these companies have just been chipping away, year after year, trying to make phones more perfect; this is what healthy competition looks like imo. You can say the phone market has just gotten stale and boring, but I feel an underappreciated aspect that comes with that is that almost all of these phones cover 99% of the needs of almost everyone. Pretty crazy how people from the most rich to the most destitute still have some pretty powerful tech in their pockets.

Not sure why the base S23 doesnt qualify as a small phone. Its wider than the Zenfone but also shorter. Small phones should qualify by their external dimensions, not their screen dimensions. Other than that, agree with all your picks!
@acojo820511 ай бұрын
The wider a phone is, the bigger it feels in the hand. That’s why the 6.3 inch galaxy mega from 2013 feels much bigger than a modern day phone, because the industry moved to longer aspect ratios.
@Augustov1211 ай бұрын
I could not agree more. Zenfone has a 5.9 inch screen, but the physics dimensions are the same as de 6.1 inch screen of de S23..It does not make sense to not consider the S23 as a small phone, and the base iphones too.
