I think MLB needs to start announcing when an umpire gets suspended or fined. I hear it's happened but MLB never says the umpires name. If Rob Manfred wants to improve player relations within MLB he should start cleaning up umpire's mistakes with fines suspensions & firings. Like Angel Hernandez needs to be fired immediately
@jacobhorak45782 жыл бұрын
I fully agree, however part of the umpire union's agreement with MLB is that all punishments to umps are kept private so unfortunately I don't think we're gonna get to see any fines or suspensions to umps publicly in the near future.
@brianemerich25242 жыл бұрын
your first issue is understanding the mlb doesn't regulate umpire punishments, unless it is something not related to calls made on the field. mlb designates the crew assignments and that is pretty much it, which is what hernandez sues them over. remember angel hernandez has already lost lawsuits claiming the mlb was racist, and now is currently in a lawsuit claiming that joe torre manipulated end of season umpiring statistics to make his numbers look worse than they were. my take on hernandez is that he has been bad enough for long enough that people who have never watched baseball in their lives know his name.

I think the Mariners should enthusiastically celebrate every hit, strikeout and run. The M's would get in trouble for retaliating even though the Angels were cowardly bullies. The disciplinary committee at the front office at MLB set a horrible precedent in this incident. The message is that you can hit a batter after warnings and if they react, the player who reacts gets the hammer brought down while the team that ordered the hit gets a slap on the wrist. The angels also basically mugged Winker at the start of the fight. The Angels Manager and pitcher should have received suspensions at least twice as long as the most severe punishment for a Mariner.

If he's attempting to avoid getting hit and as a result his bat travels through the zone, that's not a strike. It must be, in the umpires judgement, an attempt to "strike at the pitch." So this was a good call.

The screen of the pitch at 17:50 gives a very clear indication of how badly that computer strike zone box is. The fancy computer shows the ball above the computerised box, yet where they show the ball as being at the plate is level with the batters elbow and about halfway between where the top of the box is and where it should be. based on the drawing of the strike zone in the official rule book the top of the catcher's helmet is where the top of this batter's strike zone should be, yet the TV magic box has the top of the strike zone about a foot below where it should be based on the batter and the rules. So the announcers have to ague the call due to bad technology screwing things up - again.

He has no control over the umpires Union. Part of the Union agreement with MLB is the union has full control of punishment and grading. Only thing MLB does is assign em. Manfred’s hands are tied. He’s not a pushover or a coward, he’s a man with no choice or options. And there are way less blown calls than the media and whiny coaches would want you to believe. That’s why I follow things like Close Call, groups that analyze and show what happened and if it’s truly a bad call or not. Much of the rulebook is based around judgment and broad criteria, they are calling things as written and sometimes it’s a split second decision. I’d love to see most of the people who comment and complain spend time in the umpires shoes, or in referees shoes if they are so inclined. I’m a football referee, state certified, work everything from kids up to semi-pro, I gained a whole new respect for officials by becoming one. It is so not as easy as anyone sitting on the coach things it should be. Not by a long shot. Maybe if more gave it a try, they’d understand that. I suggest you go back to the rule book. The moment the ball hits the batter it's a dead ball and nothing that happens after that is relevant. Also, his motion after being hit is NOT an attempt to play the ball, but a person hurt by the hit staggering around. Thus it's not a swing at all.
@rudebodega2 жыл бұрын
@@ernestbywater411 he got hit square in the chest dude, he’d already come all the way around when the ball got there. It doesn’t have to be a full swing, just a commitment to do so, and turning your hips and chest while the bat comes across the plate is a commitment to a swing. There have been plays where only the hands and bat moved and it was called a strike because the bat crossed the plate too far, how is this not a swing? I know the rules, I played for years growing up and I saw this sort of thing happen more than once. If I want to avoid a ball, I duck or jump backwards, or at least turn my back to absorb the hit. I don’t turn to face it and wear it on the chest like Happy Gilmore, that’s literally the opposite of what you should do. Even the commentators say it’s a swing and it’s literally their job to watch games all day

@@rudebodega He checked the swing before it came around then got hit in the chest and staggered back and turned as he staggered. But the moment the ball hit his chest it's a dead ball and he had not swung enough for it to be called a swing at that point. @rudebodega2 жыл бұрын
@@ernestbywater411 the point is he attempted to swing. Checked swings get called strikes all the time and they aren’t nearly as dramatic. If he’s really trying to avoid the pitch, he’s terrible at it. If he’s trying to check his swing, he’s terrible at it. Either way, in my experience I’d call that a strike and you’re more than welcome to disagree
@ernestbywater4112 жыл бұрын
@@rudebodega For a checked swing to be called a strike the swinging bat has to go past a certain point while the ball is live, the bat had NOT reached that point when the ball went dead immediately on contact. Thus it is not a swing or a strike. I'm not an Ump, but I have 2 US friends who are and I asked them to view the footage, and they both said it was not a strike swing at all. That makes three Umps who ruled that way. I called it a HBP due to the ball going dead on contact and also checked that with the Umps. I don't know if he was trying to avoid the ball or not as it looked to me like he started a swing,m checked it, got hit in the chest and winded, then started to stagger about due to the pain. Watch his hands when he starts to stagger, he is NOT making an attempt to swing at or play the ball, he's more focussed on his pain and his footing. However, it's all irrelevant as what's important is where the bat is at the time of contact and the ball going dead.

Umpires that regularly F up, should be sent down to the minors to work on their alleged skills. There is no reason to allow bad umpires to continue to be bad for years and years. The strike zone this year alone has been horribly called, and hasn't improved much as the season has progressed. MLB is all for change right, FIX THE PROBLEM WITH SHIT UMPIRES.

In football (Soccer) we now have VAR (Video Assistant Referee) to stop bad calls doesn't Baseball have the same?

The foul ball argument by Rocco should have been a moot point, Kepler offered at the pitch anyway so it was a strike by swing or by foul.

These umpires are so pathetic most of them don’t know the rules and decide the outcome of games real sad

8:07 Kepler definitely swung anyway so they shouldn't be arguing so much.

How you gonna mess up by calling a ball a strike by almost 10 inches?!
