I’m continuously taken back by Daz’s American sports knowledge. I couldn’t name 10 current British athletes, let alone former ones and this dude knew Girardi was a catcher for the Yankees back in the day. Impressive man.

Yes, Joe Girardi was a catcher for the Yankees. Good catch! Is managers arguing part of the game? In a way, I guess. The players like to see their manager stick up for them, and the fans absolutely love it, too. That's when they are in their home ballpark. If you're in the opposing team's ballpark, that's a whole different deal. :)

Often times, the manager does it to save their player. The player will start arguing with the umpire and the manager will run out of the dugout, send his player back and start arguing with the umpire instead. This way, they get thrown out instead of the player.

But, in their fits of rage, I'm sure the practical effect of ridding themselves of a possible unintentional "weapon" that might gouge an ump's nose, forehead or mouth contributes another factor to remove it. Guys the majority of times managers get tossed to keep a player from getting ejected. Umpires will let you go for some time unless they hear one of the "magic words". Managers do toss the hat so they can get nose to nose with the umpire. Joe Girardi was indeed a catcher for the Yankees. He is presently the manager of the Phillies. A lot of times also if a team is playing a bit lackluster, the managers will get ejected to pump the players back up.

Fun story about Lou Pinella as a very young player when one day he got into a taxi in NYC wanting to head back to his hotel. The cab driver took him on the "scenic" route so Pinella was steamed when he finally reached his hotel. Walked into his room, looked out the window and saw the taxi was still there down below. Forgot how many floors up (7th?). Well he opened the window, unplugged the TV, and dropped it right on to taxi. That is how of much of a hot head he once was. He's actually been more subdued coaching for the last 30 years. But there are times he has blown his top and fans love the entertaining spectacle of it.

A big part of why the managers get so animated is this isn't normally shown in real time on the big screen, so some hat throwing, stomping and dirt kicking really gets the crowd into it. Everyone in the park can see if you pull a base out and walk off with it or give it a toss

There was a commercial in I think the 2000's where a well known firecracker of a coach went out to talk to the ump and the conversation was something like "that was the right call blue but close play like that the fans expect me to come out and get ejected over that" and they basically have a normal conversation while making it look like hes flipping out. A lot of times, managers come out to argue for a couple of reasons. 1. to try to get to the ump as quickly as possible to prevent their player (who's arguing with the ump) from being thrown out. Another is the team of the manager getting thrown out gets a boost of energy and confidence from their manager sticking up for them. It is an old school concept that is slowly dying out, but is far from extinct. and as others have mentioned, they take their cap off to get as close in the face of the ump as possible, so as not to hit them in the head with the bill of their cap. You won't get suspended for getting thrown out for arguing, but you will if you touch the umpire with any part of your body, or uniform.

As stated a few times already. Hats are removed so they can get right in their faces. If a hat is not removed and you get into an umps face and the bill of the hat makes contact with the ump, a fine will be added to your ejection. So they remove it entirely to avoid any contact with an ump when they get in their faces.

Arguing like this with an umpire is definitely a part of baseball. You'll get ejected, but you can still argue, and the ump will argue right back lol. It usually only lasts for a minute or two, and is a spectacle. It's just how it's always been done. It never gets too serious. Nobody ever touches an umpire. And it doesn't happen all the time. Only on somewhat rare occasions when a team feels they've been completely screwed. And it's usually something that builds over the course of the game.

They take off their cap because if they contact the umpire, then they usually get a one game suspension and a fine. The brim of the cap is considered a part of the manager. If that comes in "contact" with the umpire, then the suspension and fine apply. Similar to the hit by pitch rule, where just grazing the batter's jersey with a pitch leads to the batter being awarded first base.

They take the cap off so when they lean in to argue the cap doesn't ever hit the umpire or else its a automatic fine and suspension. And many times a manager will come out and argue like these examples to try and protect their players from being thrown out of the game especially if its a star player, basically they act wild to shield the player and take the ejection for them. You guys are actually right on the umpires know whats coming so for the most part they just let the managers blow of steam and after the game is over they go to sleep and wake up and do it again, no harm no foul.

Players, managers, and umpires are not allowed to fraternize at any time. In the earlier years it led to fixing game outcomes, and even the hint of favoritism in calls, etc. on the field. The rule is universal for really all levels of American sports. Players are not allowed to fraternize even with the other team, and that includes before a game, and that is again because of bribe offers and what was known as "hippodroming" (losing a game to fix the outcome).

This sort of thing has a long tradition in baseball - for more than a century. And how far a player or manager can go before being tossed is fairly well established. Obviously, much of it is personality dependent. But managers also do it to show they are sticking up for their players, and to bring the attention onto themselves, even to the point of being thrown out, to prevent their players from being thrown out. Earl Weaver, long-time manager of the Baltimore Orioles from the late 60s to the early 80s, may well have been thrown out of more games than anyone else.

One reason they probably take the hats off is that the only thing that really gets the managers in trouble, beyond being kicked out of that game, is if they touch the umpire. And if you see how close they get in the faces of the umps, it would be pretty hard to get that close without hitting the umpire with the visor of the hat. Another might be that baseball is the only sport in which the managers dress like they are players, and the hat might take away from their dignity in those fights.

They take the hat off so they can get in the umpire's face without the risk of touching him. A manager who touches an umpire in an argument will get a heavy fine and possibly a suspension. Earl Weaver, one of the all-time great arguers, used to turn his cap backwards to accomplish the same thing. In most of these cases the manager is putting on a show to fire up his team. In other cases, the manager argues with the umpire to keep one of his players from doing it and getting thrown out. The umpires and managers don't get together for a beer after the game. They're not allowed to fraternize with each other. The umpiring crew will go out together, but will stay away from the bars and restaurants where the managers, coaches, and players are known to hang out.
@dcmc7383

The hat thing....it's a matter of not assaulting the person you're about to yell at since you don't want anything to touch the other person. It's not an automatic "you're out" if you take off the hat. If taking off the hat is accompanied by something verbally foul...then you're thrown out. You can get closer into the face of the ump without the hat bill getting in your way or touching the ump. Nose to nose, so to speak. An ump (especially the old timers) will sometimes let a coach or a player vent for a while as long as they aren't vulgar or too disrespectful....as in "There is no way that was a strike. It was so low to the ground, a sweeper could have picked it up. The ball actually got dirt on it because it was so low. No one with 20/20 vision would have called that a strike...and on and on." The ump would probably just give him back some sarcasm. However, if a coach or player goes up and says "You're an idiot for calling that a strike..." or "Have you f***ing lost your mind?" Then they are probably gonna be called out. There's an art to it, quite frankly, that lends a bit of entertainment to the game. It is often part of the kicking dirt on the umps shoe or onto a base, lots of hand waving, and the occasional chest bump (a la gorillas, lol). Sometimes the coach will take it out on one of the umps so their player doesn't have to do so; the coach doesn't want the player to lose his temper and get tossed. The coach is showing loyalty to the player and team WHILE ensuring a good player stays in the game. If something really bad happens and fists are thrown, players can be suspended and/or fined. For instance, this can happen if a pitcher throws the ball and connects with the hitter. If the hitter, or his coach and teammates, think it was on purpose, they will probably sling a few words at the mound OR they may storm the mound. The players on both sides can also come out of the dugout if it's really bad (like the pitcher has hit multiple players or has a rep for purposely hitting players). When everyone ends up on the field, that's called "clearing the bench." Things can get wild during a bench clearer. Another good reaction video. You guys are fun to watch. Cheers from North Carolina!

If you touch an ump, you're suspended. You take off the hat so it doesn't accidentally hit them when you're yelling in their face.

NFL had replay for a long time, but MLB didn't until 2008. So they have only the ump to decide if someone is out or not.

They throw their hats off because they don't want the bill of the cap to make contact with the umpire. Any contact even incidental results in a 10 game suspension.

I actually played for one of these managers for a while: Jim Leyland. He always, always had our backs as players. It definitely makes playing the game easier when you know your manager is willing to stand up for you like this. And what Mike said was definitely true. The baseball season is broken down into three or four game series-the umpiring crew is the same for the whole series, so you yell and scream like this, then you have them again the next day and all is forgotten. For my money, this is the best ejection ever (and you guys can hear some of what these conversations are like here, too): kzbin.info/www/bejne/fKPLnoh9h8aCrbs

The managers take their hats off so the can yell at the umpires face from as close as they can without making contact. The brim of the cap would make getting right in his face more difficult

A lot of the emotion the mangers let out in these arguements comes from multiple innings of poor calls on the flipside mangers can use getting ejected to get the team energized

A good manager protects his players. Once one of them gets involved with an ump, he's kind of obligated to get out there. Not just to separate them or calm his guy down, but to show he'll fight for them.

Honestly I think the hats coming off is strictly bc they are so angry that they need to do something with their hands, and taking a swing at the umps is out of the question lol

I’d say one of the best micd up moments of all time is “conversation between Mets manager Terry Collins and umpire Tom Hallion” great video to react to.

The most entertaining manager to be ejected was Earl Weaver, of the Baltimore Orioles. A lot of the umpires hated him!

Usually they take the hats off so the bill doesn't touch the umpire because they know they're going to be yelling close to his face.

reason they take the caps off is cause if they touch the umpire it's an automatic fine so rather then risk the fine it is usually taken off

Making any sort of contact with the umpire is a big no-no. It’s a 2-for-1 special taking the hat off. You can throw it down in anger and get in the umps face.

Goddam I miss Jim Leyland managing the Tigers. He was an old school, ornery sumbitch but he got the most out of his players and had their backs at all times
