I'm surprised they didn't talk about that Albert Belle incident more. Yes the umps took the bat and brought it to the umpires office in the stadium. While the game was going on one of Belles teammates broke into the umpires office to steal the bat back lol. Ahhh the 90's 🤣

But I guess it shouldn't be a super shocker Grimsley would be involved in something like that, involving cheating. Because I'm pretty sure years later his name was linked to steroid use, and if I remember correctly they even came up with evidence of it being shipped to his house... They didn't show the best part of Chris "Spuds" Sabo for Cincinnati = he broke his bat and was using someone else's bat that broke with cork in it. As he was leaving the dugout having been thrown out of the game, he walks past 1B Hal Morris and says something to him as Hal hides his head and both laugh. It was Hal Morris' bat and Spuds got caught with it corked.

I think it's unfair to call the Chris Sabo incident "cheating." That was like the third bat he had used that inning, after breaking two bats previously, and that last one he used also sounded like it broke, and he ended up using it again before it shattered. Whether it was a prank by his teammate, a mixup from the batboy, or a corked bat getting mixed in with the regular ones, I don't think Sabo was trying to cheat. He left the game without much protest, but there wasn't really anything he could argue, he used a corked bat and got tossed.

George Brett was not cheating. It was ruled that the bat should have been excluded from future use, but the home run counted. The game was resumed the following month from the point of Brett's homerun and ended with a Royals win.

Not pathetic lifelong children who still wear baseball caps (usually backwards) into their middle aged adulthood and continue to refer to their favorite team in the first person like "we need to better closer." You will find that the more you actually KNOW about sports, the less you want to hear announcers who scream at every little thing and have cliched calls that don't actually tell the play very well. Like idiot John Sterling screaming It is HIGH, it is FAR, it is GONE" whether the home run is a 450 foot mammoth shot, a line drive that barely gets over the fence, or in many cases with him, a fly out that is caught just on the warning track.. Only worthless idiots who were never picked in gym class (not even last when the gym teacher said the captains HAD to choose everybody) think that that is good announcing. That is bullshit announcing by people who think fans tune into the game for THEM...not the action on he field. so, my advice to you is, grow up..take your baseball cap off, ort at least turn it around, and learn about the sports. You will enjoy it more.

Joe West has made some pretty bad calls over the years, but you've gotta respect all the good ones he makes too. The man has a firm grasp of the game, years and years of experiences and he knows bullshit when he sees it and isn't afraid to call it out. Quickest thumb in the business, but he's usually correct (on ejections, at least). He isn't great at safe/out calls but he sees a corked/split bat or a doctored ball almost instantly (and will watch a pitcher like a hawk when he suspects something). Definitely no Angel Hernandez

I clearly remember that night when Jeter hit the ball to right field and a kid leaned over the wall and caught it before our right fielder could catch it. I remember yelling at my tv screen that it was interference, but alas they were not going to overturn that call in Yankee Stadium during the playoffs with that large crowd, we got cheated. P.S. @Gregory Holden pine tar is meant to help the batter get a better grip on the bat but if you put it on the bat to high it can affect how far a ball goes. In Brett's case the tar was higher on his bat than the rules allow (probably because of the messy rag they use to apply it) but it was still low enough on the bat that it couldn't have possibly aided him in hitting that home run. There was a whole mini special on the incident amd fallout of it a few years ago

NO amount of pine tar effects the hit at all. The rule (that was repealed years earlier anyway) was NEVER about a batter gaining an unfair advantage. It was about the pine tar getting on the baseball if it was too far up the bat, and therefore the baseball having to be taken out of play. Teams weren't worth billions of dollars in those days. And especially in the 70s when that rule was last in effect. Even in the 80s, players would get fined for tossing the ball into the stands after the third out. Because balls were kept in play until they either were hit into the stands, or they were badly scuffed. Not like today when an outfield pretty much tossed the ball into the stands on every catch, and anytime a pitch is in the dirt at all, it is thrown out. Common sense would tell you that putting a stick substance on the part of the bat where you would hit it would make the ball travel slightly LESS distance. Geez..THINK about it. The ball will stick to the bat for a split second, with the pine tar "pulling" it back How on earth do you think that could help it go FARTHER? You said there was a video on that incident...but did you watch it? Because unless the people who made that video are complete idiots, they sure didn't claim the pine tar helped the ball travel farther. Nor did the appeal being upheld have ANYTHING to do with "Well, it was high, but not THAT high." The appeal was upheld because the rule was thrown out in the 70s when it was no longer quite as big a deal to take a baseball out of play. And even before the 70s, it was NEVER supposed to mean the home run was taken away. Even when enforced, the ONLY thing that rule ever called for was for the bat to be taken out of play (and the player got it back and could clean it up and use it the next at bat if he wanted to)..but ALL at bats stood up to then. Nobody was called out and no hits were taken away. The umpires fucked up. Plain and simple. THAT is the only way protests get upheld. When the umpires make a call that goes against the rulebook. And that is what they did there. There is no "Well, it was high, but not too high in my opinion" grounds for protest. That would be umpires discretion would would NOT win on protests. That is why in the entire hostory of baseball, there have only been 15 protests upheld. (And teams can no longer protest at all anymore.)

George Brett's bat was illegal but it wasn't cheating. There is no advantage to a batter to have extra pine tar. If anything, a pitcher may gain an advantage if some got onto a ball that was still being used.

The idea is to make the bat lighter, thereby allowing a faster swing. So you can weild a large bat that is lighter than regulation with cork or a similar lighter material in the core.

Rules ARE rules. But that wasn't a rule in 1983. And even when it was, the rule didn't call for the batter to be out. God damn..you are ON the internet. So you know that this great invention that has transformed research over the past 25+ years exists. So do just 15 seconds of googling to see that that rule was taken off the books several years earlier, and was NEVER about "cheating" and never called for the batter to be called out.

That last clip is probably an example of why mlb ruined extra innings. National broadcast going into the 12th inning plus gets in the way of other programming. Trying to speed up the game in other ways too but this was a big threat to their $$$

I have to admit once in a while I’ll give a batter w a corked bay the benefit of a doubt. Only bc years and years ago when I played, i didn’t realize where we were in the line up and had to run up to the box really quick, and on my way out I just grabbed A bat. Got a single, turned out I had used a softball bat. (We had it bc my dad/coach at the time also played in a SP softball league. I never even noticed. Literally just grabbed a bat and ran out there rq. Got called out bc of it. I was only like 10 so they didn’t eject me but, yea I was like “first of all I didn’t know it was a softball bat 2nd of all I didn’t know I couldn’t use a softball bat.

The George Brett thing wasn't cheating. MLB had the rule about pine tar being too high on the bats because they didn't want the balls to get pine tar on them when they were hit with the bat. It didn't do anything to change how the ball flies off the bat.

Hitters always say they'd rather have pitchers use something to get a better grip on the ball rather then have them all wild and hitting batters. As long as it's not being used to increase their spin rate.

If your talking about pitchers, they are almost ALL cheating. However, they aren't checked much (at least until recently) or b) they're really good at hiding it. Managers know pitchers are cheating but usually don't do anything because they know their pitchers are doing it too, but if it's blatantly obvious...
