9:20 Daz repeats Cookie Rojas' name. I was watching a game between the NY Mets and the Cincinnati Reds. The Mets were batting with Mookie Wilson coaching 1st base. Cookie was coaching 3rd. In the field for the Reds were Pokey Reese and Gookie Dawkins. Cookie, Mookie, Pokey & Gookie all on the field at the same time.

Catchers are sometimes called "backstops." They are literally meant to be walls that nothing should pass (not pitches, or in this case, runners). Some of these catchers, the way they make a barrier with their body, they are becoming a human wall of one person.

The new rule, 7.13, states "a runner attempting to score MAY NOT DEVIATE FROM HIS DIRECT PATHWAY to the plate in order to initiate contact with the catcher (caps are mine)". However, if the catcher is blocking the plate and is in direct line with the plate it is totally legal to run full force into him. In many of the cases here, from my vantage, the catcher is frequently in the direct baseline to the plate, and contact would still be legal.

Yep, the injury to Buster Posey (the first clip in the video) is what inspired the rule change. The new rule is that a catcher must allow the runner a path to the plate. (As it was, a fielder blocking the baseline was illegal at all bases EXCEPT home plate.) Now, the catcher can go so far as to STRADDLE the plate, or stand slightly to one side of it, but has to allow a way for the runner slide in ahead of a tag. The catcher can straddle the plate ONLY if he has possession of the ball. Basically, a play at home plate is now treated like a close play at any other base. And, oh, yes, I'd love to see you guys watch more baseball videos. 😃👍

Some of these are older. The rule change prohibits a catcher from blocking the plate unless he has the ball. Also a runner can't run through the catcher. They have to attempt to slide or avoid a tag. The one near the end where the runner went in feet first would not have caused an argument. He did exactly what he was supposed to do. Also if they had let some of these run a couple seconds longer you would have seen some of the runners and catchers give each other a slap on the rump or a pat on the back, knowing that it was just a guy doing his job. Another thing that has changed is at 2nd base. When a runner goes into 2nd trying to break up a chance at a double play. They are allowed to go in hard, but they used to often times go after the fielder instead of the base. Now you must be close enough to reach the base (even with an extended arm) or you can't make contact. You also can't go past or over 2nd base to take out the fielder. Lots of concussions caused the rule changes. As to the spikes, they are metal and old time baseball great Ty Cobb who played many years ago, and had a reputation for being a nasty player, used to actually sharpen his spikes and slide in hard and feet first.

The first old clip at 4:35 was the All Star Game. Just a fun exhibition game in middle of season with the best players voted in by the fans from both leagues. Pete Rose was the runner that plowed into Ray Fosse the catcher. The injuries from that play followed Fosse the rest of his career. Pet Rose would go onto manage the Reds and get banned from baseball for life for betting on games his own team was playing in. Pete Rose was a real POS. Pete Rose was also one of the best hitters to play the game, he had 4,256 hits in his career, more than anyone before or since. But he destroyed his legacy and they won't let him in the Hall of Fame.

However, Barrett had his back to the plate, meaning he couldn’t have even known that Pierzynski did it. Barrett inadvertently got in Pierzynski’s way as he tried to get back to the dugout, and lost his composure when they bumped shoulders. New rule in 2014 after Buster Posey busted his leg on a play. They discourage agressive collisions now, but the rule states that a runner can't go out of his way in the base path in order to blow up the catcher.

I believe the rule these days is that a runner can hit the catcher if the catcher is directly in his path. In years past runners used to seek contact with the catcher who wasn't even in his way. That isn't allowed anymore. But there are still legal collisions, but not as many as there used to be.

This play is not allowed anymore because too many catchers were getting hurt. Buster Posey was the main reason the rule changed. I had a neighbor who was drafted to the MLB out of high school. He was a catcher who hit .450 in high school. He started playing in the minor leagues, got taken out at the plate and got seriously injured and it ended his career at 19 years old.

Btw you have to tag him unless bases were loaded and then the runner is a forced out. Forced meaning bases loaded, the guy on 3rd base has to go home so when that happens catcher just has to catch it while being on the plate. Doesn’t matter if he knocks it out then. It’s when bases are not loaded that the tag must be applied. The rule was changed due to concussions but still if the throw leads the catcher up the line the runner can still run through him he just can’t go out of his way to do it. If it happens to be a bang bang play and there’s no way to avoid it then yes they can still try to run over the catcher

While the injury (a fractured and separated shoulder which healed incorrectly, causing chronic pain) definitely impacted his later career, so did a series of other, unconnected injuries that are endemic to all catchers.)

10:00--The shoes baseball players wear are a type of cleat generally referred to as "spikes" by baseball players. They are usually made of metal, not necessarily sharp in that you couldn't hold it against a finger and slice, but they'll take a gash out of you if someone slides into you or you "spike yourself" when tucking your own leg up to slide. You'll actually bleed a surprising amount from a spike wound in your calf.

That first clip of Buster Posey is why the rules changed. He was on track to be an easy Hall of Fame catcher, but that hit took him out for the rest of the season and is likely part of the reason he retired younger than anyone expected. So the rules have not changed much. Baseball is a game of mutual respect, and remember - baserunners are on the other side of the ball half the game. A baserunner owns the base path unless a play is being made against that runner for a tag out, like a throw in from the outfield to get them out. If a runner is blocked while running the bases, they can ram through the defensive player and the umpire should award the runner an extra base or the plate. The caviat plate play is still supposed to allow a pathway and force a tag. If a defensive player blocks and gets knocked, so be it. It all depends on the timing and possession of the throw. MLB let it get out of hand, and had to stricten back up because of injuries. As a little boy it was hammered into me that you own that base path if you're the runner, and if you're the fielder, you tag with your glove, not your body. Try to block them? Take your lick and the runner will take the bag. And then nurse your injuries and learn.

In the very first highlight, the runner illegally (I think) goes into the catcher instead of going directly for the base. It is legal to run full force into the catcher if he is blocking the base path or plate. The rule to protect the catcher in today's game is in regard to the catcher's positioning before he catches the ball. The catcher cannot wait for the ball in the basepath or directly on top of the plate; only move to catch the ball in the path of the runner. In many of these highlights, the catcher would be illegally positioned in today's game. That is why you don't see as many collisions in today's game.

Baseball isn't supposed to be a contact sport. Catchers blocking the plate are jerks. First, second, and third base players can't block the base, neither should the catcher be able to. Also base runners shouldn't be lowering their shoulder trying to disrupt the catcher or knock the ball out of the catcher's mitt. It's all low class.

Hence why you're taught at an early age to reclaim a base path if someone tries to take it. And to flop if necessary if a position player just 'so happens' to be in the path. Defensive players are taught *not* to do that as a rule. So if they do, they are fair game.

The new rule is pathetic. It is perfect for high school and college ball but the professional league exists for entertainment, and plate collisions are always fun as you can see. The game needs more reasons to get out of your chair because the product is currently just so so bad. We get fewer balls hit and less physical contact now than ever before and I don’t know why anyone would watch a full game unless you’re making a day of going to a game.

These players cost millions of dollars it doesn't do the owners any good to have a player on the injured list.

You're not that old bloke Jorge Posada played 17 years and retired in 2012. The most unnecessary catcher injury was in the 1971 all-star game when Pete Rose plowed into catcher Ray Fosse 3:35 destroying Fosse's shoulder. Fosse was never the same after that play and retired a few years later still in his 20's. Rose was known as Charlie Hustle back then but that play was completely unnecessary.

Why? Pete was a lot of things, but he played to win at all times. Totally legal play.

@@paulobrien9572 Fosse's career wasn't ended. He was injured on the play, for sure, but played for six more years after it, including batting over .300 for the Indians in '76. But, yeah, the collision was unnecessary for an All Star Game.

Increasing camera tech has been good for sports, but not so much for movies & TV shows. In close-ups, young actors/actresses look decades older than they are. IRL, you don't get that close to people's faces unless you're having intimate relations.

It has nothing to do with Wokisim. It's because of concussions. NFL players were committing suicide after they were done with playing because of the effects of all the concussions they got playing. I would not be surprised if the same thing was happening to retired baseball players too.

Well catchers breaking legs is kind of what you don’t want to see. Has nothing to do with being”woke” or whatever nonsensical I think it makes me sound cool to say useless terminology you want to use. 😒

Being woke is associated with being weak,. The rule was changed because they claimed the catcher was defenseless..

"Wokeism." Ugh. Don't become one of those channels. Yeah it's fun to watch these collisions but it's stupid to have guys getting hurt. It's like the NFL stopping hits to the head.
