The saddest part is the fact Roberto spent the last days of his life desperately looking for supplies for the people of Nicaragua and because the people were telling him the Authorities were taking the supplies for themselves he decided to go personally and make sure it was going directly to the people who needed the most. The plane was so heavy full of supplies it couldn't take off. And all in a New Year's eve.

I’m of Cuban descent and we Cubans have a little bit of a cultural rivalry with Puerto Ricans but my love for Roberto Clemente runs deep. I get emotional hearing him speak Spanish on American national television. I can only imagine how those who experienced it first hand must’ve felt. Rest easy, Roberto. You’re a hero.

His is perhaps the most tragic story I’ve heard of in any sport. I remember the day he died & I’ll never forget hearing the news. Its seared into memory. So sad.

What a role model! If he was a ball player today, the endorsements would be enormous, yet his humility and skill on the field made him unlike most other ball players. You’ve got to remember Clemente faced possibly the best starting four in World Series history-Baltimore’s FOUR 20 GAME WINNERS! > McNally/Palmer/Cuellar/Dobson-and still hit .414 with 2 home runs (missing a third by inches when his game 1 opposite field laser was controversially called foul) including a hit in all 7 games. When you consider the rest of the team hit .210 and the guys hitting before Clemente (Cash/Clines or Hebner) hit .132 you’ve got to place his performance, which included throwing and running like a gazelle (remember his triple in game 6) at age 37, among the greatest and probably the most heroic in World Series history.

I'll never forget the '71 WS. Iwas 11 years old and had the flu! Which meant no school and the WS was on tv. My mother swore I willed myself to get sick so i could stay home. Any how, that was when Roberto Walker Clemente became my sports idol. That year in little league i tried to bat like Clemente, run like him, throw like him (yeah, right)! I think i even tried to speak with a spanish accent (not easy for a farm kid from east Tennessee). I cried for hours in my room on New Years Day 1973 after learning of his death. On my honeymoon years later our cruise left out of San Juan and i took a taxi to Carolina just so i could see where he was from. Here's to the greatest right fielder to play the game and one of the true good guys in life!!

Still my favorite player of all time, I loved Roberto Clemente as only a baseball loving boy can do. He was my hero. I was heartbroken. Sadly, we never got to say goodbye to him. This is a beautiful tribute to a wonderful person gone too soon.

When I was a kid growing up near Pittsburgh Roberto Clemente was THE player to emulate . Learning how to make the basket catch and the turn and throw while leaping were the moves you showed off with. I saw him him throw a guy out at third from deep right field with no bounces - a perfect laser line throw. It was beautiful.

Happy belated birthday Roberto Clemente. August 18. I’m a Giants fan and a baseball fan. I became familiar with Clemente because of my father. My dad saw him play when he was younger and said Clemente was amazing to watch. Truly a remarkable man. For his birthday I wore my Clemente jersey all day. RIP.

He's an icon not just for Puertorricans like me but Latin America in general, I wasn't even born when he died, never knew him and never saw him play but he's my favorite baseball player of all time and one of my idols.

I am in my 60s now but I remember taking that long drive from erie,pa to pittsburg.pa with my dad and brother to watch Roberto Clemente play in Forbes field it was awesome to see him pick up a ball in right field either throw to 3rd base or home plate nail the guy out and seeing him get hit run bases were so great there so nothing he could not do on the field yes it was a long drive to Pittsburg but my dad love him so much he made the trip several times that was good memory I had with dad when he was alive

I wasn't old enough to see Roberto play. My family are SF Giants fans, and my Dad and my eldest brother saw Willie Mays live, and I always heard about how great of a ballplayer Mays was. My Dad and eldest brother told me a lot about Roberto, especially how great his arm was. They always had the highest praise for Roberto Clemente as a ballplayer and also as a Great Man. I sure wish there were more videos of his incredible outfield throws. I would've loved to see him play in person.
