The saddest part is the fact Roberto spent the last days of his life desperately looking for supplies for the people of Nicaragua and because the people were telling him the Authorities were taking the supplies for themselves he decided to go personally and make sure it was going directly to the people who needed the most. The plane was so heavy full of supplies it couldn't take off. And all in a New Year's eve.

You’ve got to remember Clemente faced possibly the best starting four in World Series history-Baltimore’s FOUR 20 GAME WINNERS! > McNally/Palmer/Cuellar/Dobson-and still hit .414 with 2 home runs (missing a third by inches when his game 1 opposite field laser was controversially called foul) including a hit in all 7 games. When you consider the rest of the team hit .210 and the guys hitting before Clemente (Cash/Clines or Hebner) hit .132 you’ve got to place his performance, which included throwing and running like a gazelle (remember his triple in game 6) at age 37, among the greatest and probably the most heroic in World Series history.

Any how, that was when Roberto Walker Clemente became my sports idol. That year in little league i tried to bat like Clemente, run like him, throw like him (yeah, right)! I think i even tried to speak with a spanish accent (not easy for a farm kid from east Tennessee). I cried for hours in my room on New Years Day 1973 after learning of his death. I remember watching an afternoon game after school at my grandmother's. The sports headline the following day said, "Cincinnati 8, Clemente 7." He had all 7RBIs in the game in a losing effort.

Awesome player and human being. I am not such a religious person, but may Roberto be in peace. All love and respect for such a man.

This year will mark the 50th Anniversary of Clemente’s death. MLB better do something special to celebrate the man.

I wasn't old enough to see Roberto play. My family are SF Giants fans, and my Dad and my eldest brother saw Willie Mays live, and I always heard about how great of a ballplayer Mays was. My Dad and eldest brother told me a lot about Roberto, especially how great his arm was. They always had the highest praise for Roberto Clemente as a ballplayer and also as a Great Man. I sure wish there were more videos of his incredible outfield throws. I would've loved to see him play in person.

Imagine Mays and Clemente on the same team? They played together in PR. That must've been a blessing for the fans

@@char-lee212 I've heard so many great things about their skills, but I was really young when their careers were winding down. I remember watching the news when the plane Roberto was in went down. :( I wish there were more video highlights of Clemente and Mays.
