MLB trade deadline: Should Pirates grab Taylor Ward, J.J. Bleday? Could Aroldis Chapman be dealt?

On his daily First 10 podcast, Post-Gazette sports columnist Jason Mackey poses six questions the Pirates must answer in the second half of the season. Will we see innings limits for Jared Jones and Paul Skenes? Will young pitchers including Luis Ortiz, Quinn Priester and Mike Burrows play key roles down the stretch? And what will GM Ben Cherington do at the MLB trade deadline at the end of the month? Why do names like the Los Angeles Angels Taylor Ward and the Oakland Athletics make the most sense as targets? And is there a chance Aroldis Chapman and his hefty contract could be sent out of town, even if the Pirates add with the intention of fighting for a playoff spot?

Chapman should be dealt if they could get a starting bat in return. If not, no reason to other than to dump salary. The backend of Holderman, Chapman and Bednar is respectable enough to keep it together, but if they need money to make another move, then Chapman is the odd man out considering someone who's firmly in contention will take him and at least a AAA prospect could be gotten in return...and on this team, that's as good as most starting position players anyway.

If they aren't going to make a push for the play-offs, I can see them moving him for a prospect. Wouldn't go over very well, but I could see that happening.

They need a center fielder that is controlled through next season. Anyone from Daulton Varsho, Jose Siri, JJ Bleday, Jazz Chisholm, Luis Robert, etc. would be a large get. I'd even trade a pen arm for a CF who is close to MLB ready. They just don't have anyone who seems a lock to take over center field in the upper minors and the free agent class next year is bad. I think its way easier to find corner OF bats

Chapman won't be dealt and it's almost an idiotic suggestion. His high-level experience and patches of absolute dominance are priceless when you're bridging the gap from solid starting pitching. Hefty contract? Do you know anything, sir? He's a bargain at 10.5 million considering his irreplaceable role in the bullpen for the current construction of this team. Taylor Ward and JJ Bleday are the exact definition of mediocre - break even WAR and even lower OPS. Suwinski deservedly will continue to get at-bats and is a far superior option than either of the players above. In case all of you goofs were sleeping last year, Suwinski hit a homer every 17 at-bats. That's elite. That upside alone is worth it. It's embarrassing how little some of you fans actually know about the sport you follow. Class dismissed.

Do not get fringe bats that we have to guess , or they’re on the cheap. Chapman cannot throw strikes consistently He’s a wasted 10.5 million Elevate Carmen In 2013 we got Morneau and Byrd Look at that roster that won 94 games Barmes Snider Sanchez The team is underachieving and mistakes by the manager have hurt. Don’t tell me we’ve run out of pitchers to put some waiver guy in so we lose We are better than Milwaukee Arguably as good as anybody

This aged like milk. Chapman mowed down the side on 11 pitches, 10 of them strikes. Only reason they weren't all strikes is because one of them was a waste pitch.

How realistic is it for Skenes to not finish top 2 in RoY voting, so we keep that 6th year of control? As of now, fWAR has him 7th among rookies. And there are some big teams with guys ahead of him

That last year of "control" is likely worthless due to the number he'll be (rightfully) awarded in arbitration.

@@SportsSharp412 has there been a pitcher get more than 20 mil in their final arbitration year? I want to say the record is around there. Thats probably half what he should be making. Also it ups our leverage in talks about resigning him, and his value in trades

If that's what you believe, great. You also do know that fWAR is cumulative and his figure would be significantly higher if he had started the season in the majors, right?

DFA Gandall and bring up Delay. Delay could be the starting catcher on several teams but Bart has the better bat n Pittsburgh. Leave Davis in the minors until he can figure out how to hit high caliber pitching. Trade Taylor if possible, maybe some team could use a late inning defensive replacement that doesn't hit well. Someone tell Suwinski that you don't have to try to pull every pitch. Leave Brooklyn in right to platoon with Joe.

Trade Grandal and keep Bart as the starting catcher. His bat is way better and he’s good defensively. Definitely get more OF help because Taylor isn’t hitting well. Maybe another starting pitcher.

Trade Grandal? No, you DFA him. Unlike Hedges, there is no reason anyone would take Grandal in trade for anything other than a 3rd stringer and break in case of emergency backup, and the Pirates would get literally nothing helpful in return. DFAing him clears a spot on the roster and that's the best they can get out of it.

Starting pitching? Skenes, Jones, Keller. Jones will be back very soon. Then you have Perez, Gonzalez, and priester, Ortiz. We will have a abundance of starting pitching. I wouldn't mind trading even 2 starters especially since Ashcroft is knocking on the starting pitching spot. Still have one of the best if not the best starters in MLB this season. And if your thinking of next year we get olivedo, back after his TJ surgery which his rehab is going very well. So even for next year we will still have alot of depth and great depth for starters.

As far as grabbing any of these players...Sure, why not? If they have a pulse then that's reason enough. Beggars can't be choosers. As long as they are better than what's currently on the roster, then even marginal upgrades should be welcomed eagerly.

The Pirates should either stand pat or sell because they will be sinking like a stone after these next 2 series against the Phillies and Cardinals.

Either way you still need to trade for a true CF that is young with control now! After the season go after a reliable first baseman

The Pirates are DONE. As usual they're playing for two things: .500 and keep out of last place. They are pathetic; the owner is pathetic; the manager is pathetic; the GM is pathetic. Did I mention they're pathetic?
