For those still wondering why 0:31 is an unbelievable play, here's why. 1. It's Bartolo Colon. 2. He's a pitcher. 3. It's his first career home run. 4. He went 19 years in the majors without hitting a home run.

One of the greatest outfield catches of all tim, @2:44 ...Jim Edmonds Petey-dive catch over his head. Unbelievable play.
@whitedeion598
@whitedeion598 7 жыл бұрын
I'd call it the most overrated. Why in the world is he running looking backwards (which cuts down speed greatly) for the ball and then diving forward? If he runs a better route it is a routine catch that no one remembers. I've seen many centerfielders make that catch without ever getting on a highlight reel. Edmonds was the epitome of a hotdog in the field. Andruw Jones made tough catches look easy. Edmonds made routine catches look spectacular.
@anticipation2796
@anticipation2796 4 жыл бұрын
I’m sure you could make that catch
@alb639
@alb639 4 жыл бұрын
@@whitedeion598 I'll respect your opinion, but I totally disagree. Maybe other CFs have made that catch. I, personally, have never seen another and would love to check one out if you know of a link or even just the CFs name. I don't follow the NL nearly as close as I follow AL baseball, so I may have missed one or two of the catches you mention. The reason he turns his head is to keep track of that ball. There is no other way to field it. Maybe a quicker OF would have gotten to it without needing to dive, but that doesn't take away from the excellence of Edmond's catch, in my opinion. If Edmonds didn't turn to watch the ball he most likely would have lost the ball completely. I'm not quite sure how he could have run a better route to the ball. The quickest path between two points is a straight line when on a flat plane.
@whitedeion598
@whitedeion598 4 жыл бұрын
@@anticipation2796 I've made a catch better than that, but it was more luck than anything. I didn't drift off to the side and have to slow down with my head tilted back. I turned around and sprinted to a spot. The ball came over my shoulder and I made the diving catch with my back to the infield. I'll never forget the batter slamming his helmet down and screaming "f ing deion" after seeing that I secured the catch through a somersault. Thanks for letting me relive my best defensive play ever. It was fun lol
@whitedeion598
@whitedeion598 4 жыл бұрын
@@alb639 we have a very definition of a straight route. He was drifting right initially and got slightly turned around, which caused the ball to go over his head instead of his shoulder. andruw jones made that play routinely. He was always squared up running after balls. He turned his back on balls all the time and managed to keep them over his shoulders. That's why all the defensive metrics had him as a much better defender than edmonds. He wasn't much faster. His instincts and route running were much better

These clips are STUNNING, and I so very much appreciate their being compiled and posted online, but I do wish they were only slightly longer. To see the players and managers argue, to hear the full calls of the commentators...even to see a replay. These are very special moments, and given out of context - while still fun and beautiful - it would be nice to have a little bit of context, and to be swept in that particular moment for just a few seconds more. But I truly don't mean to complain. Just a suggestion. These videos are baseball bliss, and I feel lucky to have them here at my fingertips.

Oakland has one of the smallest budgets in the league, they have to let pretty much 99% of their good players walk or trade them once they lose arbitration control over them. While New York can pay 10 people 30 million a year, Oakland can't even do 20 million for one player. That is like 33% of their budget.

He could flat out play. Both sides of the ball. No issues with him not giving 100 percent effort every ab or defensive play.

Garret Guillemette I cant believe he didnt even make it to a second year of HOF eligibility. He should have been elected and enshrined in my opinion.

That catch he made with the Angels is one of the most overrated catches I've ever seen. If he runs a better route he catches the ball standing up. He was better than average defensively, but not really by that much. Just looked and his best 10 year defensive stretch saw him at 51 runs above average. As a comparison, Andruw Jones was 220 runs above average

Jones was horrible the last few years of his career. He hung on by a thread. He fell off the cliff very quick. He was the best CF in baseball for a 12 year stretch with the Braves. No one can argue that. He was great to watch.

In what universe is a juiced Barry Bonds hitting a dinger an "unbelievable" play?

@@lsuboiii5726 It may have been, but the fact that he was juiced makes it more than just believable but expected and therefore unremarkable. nbelievable was Bob Beamon's long jump or Flutie's chunk into the end zone, not a walkin' 'roid smacking a ball.
