that dodgers catcher 100% sold that interference call. he hit the batter, kept fielding for a second then basically flopped when he realized it could be interference.

They need to revise the rule for batter-catcher interference. It's way to easy for the catcher to intentionally step forward into the batter or artificaially swing their hand during the follow through on a pick-off attempt. Any one that tries is all but guaranteed the out. Also, from having watched some Olympic softball recently... two first base bags isn't such a bad idea.

@@Keough. If it’s close, though, it will be hard to judge. Right now any batted ball that hits the bag is fair. Stick half the bag in foul territory, you’re going to have foul balls clipping the front edge of the bag just to the right of the line. Maybe if it was just a chalked area, though that would require additional touch ups.

9:57 - Jesus, was the catcher trying to knock the runner out with that throw? When your "intended target" has to duck away, something's amiss... 10:49 - Where did the batter interfere with the catcher's horrible throw? Not only did he stay within the box, he also stepped *back* and clutched his bat closer to himself so as to *not* interfere...with no contact through the checked swing and none during the throw, it's either purely the poor throw of the catcher or the ball sticking somewhere (leaving a different point of release) that is at fault for the failed play at second. 11:53 - The throw was in motion before contact with the bat occurred (and the bat was in the dirt, so there was barely contact made with the bottom of the shinguard...hardly enough to affect a throw in progress), so it was poor play by the player covering second, not interference.

at 2:50 the catcher tagged the hitter, he could have easily gone around the hitter to tag or try to tag the runner. he purposely tagged the hitter to make it seem like interference so that the run wouldn’t count and so they could be out of the inning. i think it was a bad call and that the catcher could’ve been a little smarter with how he went about with selling the interference call.

The interference call came into play when the batter (who I assume to be Reynolds) steps away from the plate (well beyond the base path, even) and then makes a move back into the plate area, thereby putting himself into the way of either the pitcher or catcher. If he'd been tagged by the catcher (the angles don't show one way or another), there would be absolutely no reason for him to stay near the plate nor is there any reason for him to step back towards the plate...unless he planned to interfere; to be honest, though, isn't a dropped third strike effectively a passed ball that allows the batter-runner to try for first anyway? If that's the case, then there is no reason for the batter to have stayed there (either he's out by tagging or he'd be sprinting for first)...

The one I really don't understand is the White Sox Yankees at @1:35. So the runner is clearly not within the base path, neither is the pitcher, when the collision occurs. So if the ball was thrown they would have called the runner out for interfering with the thrown, because the runner is not in the base path. But since it was a tag and not a throw it's obstruction? @trevorcassiday9010
@trevorcassiday9010 2 жыл бұрын
@@177SCmaro I think what he means is: The base path to first base is between the fair/foul line and the line that is clearly in foul ground. The runner has to run between those two lines, according to the rule. This means the base path to first base is all in foul ground. But first base has to be inside fair ground so the right most edge of first base sits on the fair/foul line with the rest of first base being inside fair ground. So first base isn't physically within, or is "outside", the base path from home plate to first that the runner has to run.

@trevorcassiday9010 2 жыл бұрын
When running to first the runner has to run between the two white lines, the inner line being the fair/foul line and the outer just being a line to keep the runner from going where ever they want. Since the runner is not within these lines, aka the base path, they are interfering with the ball being thrown in a legal way. Now on some of these it's just a bad throw and the runner being on or inside the fair/foul line has no real affect on the play but the rule doesn't account for "non-affecting" incidents. When it's a runner going to any other base, assuming the runner isn't trying to get hit by the throw, personally I think it's just a bad throw that gets the advantage of a poorly written rule. But if they don't revise the rule it's interference.

This game is STUPID. So a runner is SUPPOSED to run into a tag out? A catcher can STEP UP INTO THE BATTERS BOX to get an interference call? A runner is "supposed to run out of the line" to allow the ball to be thrown? Only to be called OUT for "not running in the line"? Someone needs to go through this stupid rulebook and actually remove some of the logical inconsistencies from it.

So a runner is SUPPOSED to run into a tag out? -- No, but you are not allowed to take the fielder down either. The runner can stop and even retreat to make it harder for the fielder to make the tag. Which is what that runner should have done. A catcher can STEP UP INTO THE BATTERS BOX to get an interference call? -- No and why would they? One out does not weigh against the possibility of a serious injury of the catcher hitting their throwing hand on a bat or a batting helmet. A runner is "supposed to run out of the line" to allow the ball to be thrown? Only to be called OUT for "not running in the line" Going to first they are supposed to stay in the 3' box in foul territory until it ends, then come to the base. Any other base, the base path is not a direct line between the bases but the clear and obvious path the runner is making to the next base. And they are only called out if they leave that path to avoid a tag.

As soon as the runner altered his path to avoid the first baseman, we have obstruction. The running lane is irrelevant on this play. The runner's base path is established when a tag is attempted. The shot of when the players got tangled up at third base? The baserunner had a legal slide and the third baseman tried to field a poor throw...neither of these is what caused the call, though. The problem was that, instead of allowing the baserunner the chance to stand up and run (due to the missed throw), the third baseman moved his legs up and got them entangled with the runner, thereby obstructing his path to the plate; if a defensive player actively obstructs an opposing player's movements, the umpires will likely call the infraction and then award the offensive player (or players) with the next base (and, since the infraction happened after a safe slide into a base, the infraction therefore awarded the baserunner home plate and the next base for any on the base path during the play).

Let's take Cooper's swing around 5:00 as an example. He barely had any bat on that pitch and, once he realized that the catcher had it, he continued his swing and stepped onto the plate...right into the catcher's throw. Had it been one fluid motion, that'd be one thing...but it almost appeared that Cooper stopped and restarted his swing as he stepped into the path (almost like he'd have been running towards first...but the sounds don't lead to the "ball in play" thought (the sound on the bat and then the sound of ball in glove)).

Why don't they make announcers take a basic rules course. Batter-runner interference at first base is not simply running inside the line. You cannot interfere with a bad throw. Also the runner only has the right to the base. The fielder has the right to attempt a play. Running in the base path but getting in the way of the fielder is runner interference, not fielder obstruction.

That's why I'm liking the double first base bag I saw in Olympic softball the other day. The runner has one side all to themselves and the fielder gets the other. No way to get away with blocking the runner from stepping on the bag, and the fielder is completely out of the way of the runner coming at them full speed.

@@Orxenhorf The MLB suggested (may be an already agreed upon future implementation, I can't remember) larger base is an arguably sufficient compromise. What I don't get is why a batter-runner, if they are bunting for the sacrifice, would not obviously position themselves outside the foul line and clearly in the lawful runner's lane. You are hoping for a hit but batting with every intention of being out to advance the runners. You run anywhere near the line and you jeopardize that. You're still out and everyone goes back to the base they started on.

@@russellcurtis2501 They are changing the 3 bases to 18 inches next year. It's a sideways way to add extra offense to the game instead of just fixing their stated problem of runner/first baseman conflict. Instead it'll shorten the distance between all the bases for runners & steal attempts, & make the bags larger preventing over sliding to prevent overzealous runners from getting put out. Double the width of first base into foul territory & there would have been no incentive to not be in the runners lane at all.
