One time Eddie Murray, who was still with the Orioles at the time, hit 3 HR (one a slam) and had 10 RBI against the Angels at Anaheim Stadium, and the Angels fans gave him a curtain call, which was cool. Of course Eddie was from Los Angeles, so he may have had a few friends/family in the stands.

Yeah, I remember his arm even more than the home runs. Some of the throws he made down the right field line were just insane. I remember thinking that Whiten was almost like a way to get out of an inning, just by letting guys get singles to right field, because he’d just throw out anyone else on the base paths.

I totally remember him for his arm. My Brother and I watched a game at Fulton County Stadium in Atlanta back in the day. Ron Gant was on second. I can't remember who hit a single to right. But they waved Gant in. And I got out of my chair and yelled, "You're out Gant, won't even be close." Everybody around looked at me like I was an idiot. Gant was out by 10 feet. I just looked at everybody and said. I know he has a cannon for an arm, and now you do you too!

Joe Buck has made incredible calls of other games like the World Series and Super Bowl. But I still think this one topps. It really put him on the map. Whitten was not a homer hitter and RBI type. +Joe Kidd I have to wonder what type of baseball player Mark Whiten was from 1990 to 2000 spent with the Toronto Blue Jays, Cleveland Indians (1st stint), St. Louis Cardinals, Boston Red Sox, Philadelphia Phillies, Atlanta Braves, Seattle Mariners, New York Yankees and the Cleveland Indians (2nd stint), and also a stint in the minors with the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2002. Whiten was signed on with the Atlanta Braves midway through the '96 season after being released from the Philadelphia Phillies because Atlanta lost David Justice for the season to undergo shoulder surgery to repair a dislocated shoulder after Justice only played 40 games. That was the absolute last time that Justice ever played for the Braves, and he would never play again for the Braves after 1996 as he was dealt to the Cleveland Indians for Kenny Lofton. Yet, Whiten was released after only 36 games by the Atlanta Braves despite the fact that Whiten was brought in to replace Justice. Whiten would spend the rest of '96 with the Mariners where he had 12 HRs and 33 RBIs in 40 games played for Seattle, which would have put Whiten on pace for an absolute blistering 48-49 HRs and 81-82 RBIs if he played a full slate of 162 games for Seattle for the whole 1996 season.

It's mind boggling because when he had his cup of coffee with the Red Sox, he looked totally lost at the plate. I saw a game live at Fenway where he looked like he'd picked up a bat for the first time the week before. I’m surprised, after the 9th inning shot, the announcers’ comments seem almost nonchalant. They didn’t even note that Whiten had just tied two revered records: most HRs and most RBIs in a game (the latter set by Bottomley 69 years earlier!) Arguably the greatest offensive display in a game in the history of MLB and they make no mention of either record? Can you imagine if either Harry Carey or Harry Calas were in the booth that night?

Keeping the machine going again in 99 and in 2000, getting them back to game 7 of the WS in 01, beating the Red Sox in 03, never missing the playoffs in his entire 12 year run with the Yankees. Sure he made some mistakes, he blew the 3-0 lead to the Red Sox but the man has a stellar, hall-of-fame manager resume and is one of the all time great Yankee managers. If you want to say he didn't win titles anywhere else, fine. Neither did Bill Parcells and he's a legend too.

I was watching this game in disbelief! It didn’t seem like a real game, it was more like batting practice” it was the most incredible game I had even seen. I had seen him hitting home runs that season, but I couldn’t help but to think, why wasn’t he hitting more home runs? It was something about his swing that was flawed!! If he could have been more consistent, he would have been a great player. It was those holes in his swing, and pitchers exposed it after that game, it was the off speed pitches that got him out. I can recall saying, he needs to lean to go opposite field more! But if you threw him a fastball middle in, just turn your head to see how far it will go!! lol 😂

Insane accomplishment on its own, but it almost was the first of its kind. Whiten nearly completed a home run cycle: he had a GS, a 3 run and two 2 run HR. That’s something that still has never been accomplished at the MLB level as of 2022. It’s been done twice in the minors, both coincidentally by Cardinals AA players.
