1981 "Not Just Anywhere" New Bedford MA Documentary

This full version -1981 New Bedford documentary features the city's progress in enhancing its historic district through rehabilitating old structures. (This part of the city was ravaged by a huge multiple alarm gas explosion that leveled or badly damaged many buildings in the historic district in 1977. Although surrounded by destruction, the Whaling Museum was miraculously spared with just a few broken windows.) Scenes of Center St, Mansions on the restoration list, scenes of the waterfront and more. John K. Bullard and Sara Delano of the Whaling Historic Area League explain their goals and mission. 0:32 my grandparents bought that dark brown house in the middle in 1970. corner of Hill St. and Mill St. my grandmother later sold it around 2007 after my grandfather died. miss that place

Thank you for uploading this video. As a resident of New Bedford I appreciate watching this documentary. I was a one year old when this film came out. What I would give to go back in time to roam threw the neighborhoods in 1981. I would go back to the certain areas that hit home such as Ashley park, Rivet street, Dartmouth st. and many more areas. I moved to California three times and some how I could not leave New Bedford. I think New Bedford has everything one needs in a City, from beaches to shopping centers, decent parks and a vibrant down town. Anyways I will always be proud of where I grew up in my city New Bedford.

It's such a beautiful and unique city, so much visible history that has, thankfully, been beautifully preserved. When I first walked the narrow cobblestone streets of Downtown New Bedford back in early 2010, I was awestruck, and reminded of Newport, Nantucket, and Portland, Maine. And I was angered that a place so postcard-perfect could be the target of so much negativity. I've since moved here, and have found even more visible history to marvel at. Right now New Bedford's biggest albatross hanging about its neck is NOT its populations of the poor or the homeless, but rather those who are barely above the bottom of the socio-economic hierarchy, and like to flood the internet with their foul negativity about a city with so much potential.

In the Urban Renewal era of the 1960s, New Bedford succumbed to the loss of over two thirds of its historic buildings. To this day New Bedford's interest in its fascinating history is miniscule. Much of the "potential" of which you speak was stripped away in the 1960s.

I loved everything about this video. Had it been my fortune to become wealthy, I would have reserved enough money to maintain my well being and the balance of it in historical preservation such as being done here. Before his death as announced today, I do wonder whether actor Ben Powers, who attended RISD in Providence, R.I., took part in any restoration projects there?

it was in the north end on belleville ave between coffin ave. and philipps ave. was closed in '83. google maps street view from 2019 shows it as a spanish church
