John Reynolds I'd personally put that 1986 game neck and neck with this one. 1986 was more shocking but 2001 was OVER twice. However, I'll tell you two that I saw that were better than that, which is 1991 Game 7 Braves v Twins, and 2001 Game 7 Yankees v Backs. 1991 was the insane 10 inning game by Morris and 2001 was Schilling v Clemens with the walkoff by Gonzalez. And of course the Mazeroski walkoff in game 7 of 1960 is considered by everyone to be the greatest baseball game of all time but I was way too young for that one.

This is why baseball is one of if not the greatest sport there is. At 4:21:54, the Rangers are one strike away. But unlike football, basketball, or hockey, there is no clock to run down. You have to get that last out and have to deliver one more pitch to home-plate. You have to give the opponent, one more chance.

Well initially the Cardinals actually gave up 2 runs in the 1st inning to fall behind but it's as if you knew they were still going to come back. They tied it up in the bottom half of the 1st and eventually took the lead and then padded their lead in the late innings. The Rangers....wilted in Game 7. After TWICE coming with 1 strike of winning the WS the night before. By the end of the game they looked deflated and shellshocked. So close to winning it all...but the resilient Cardinals just wouldn't go down without a fight. Incredible stuff. :-D

I'd always liked the Cardinals, but this game made me a fan for life. Since it happened I've been to St. Louis and seen two games at Busch. I've spent some of the best weeks of my life in Missouri (I live near Seattle). I've been to the top of the Arch, gone jet skiing in Lake of the Ozarks, and had some of the best pork ribs and frozen custard in the world, and I'm certain none of it one of it would've happened if I hadn't watched this game six years ago. I don't love the Cards because of St. Louis; I love St. Louis because of the Cards.

I grew up in suburban St. Louis between 1978-95, moved there when I was 3 years old and even though I haven't lived there for a quarter century, I still love it and consider it home. I've lived in Omaha for nearly the same amount of time but have never been able to bond to it like St. Louis. The Lou has such an amazing unique culture, with everything from strong European influence thanks to German and French settlers, to the Southern flavor with influence from black jazz and blues musicians, etc. It truly is a one of a kind city. Yes it has its share of social issues and problems but it's still such a fun city and great place to live and visit. My son and I go back at least once a year, usually during the holidays and it's not an official visit until we go to the zoo/Forest Park and Ted Drewes Frozen Custard at the least. And I still bleed Cardinal red and Blues blue and will until the day I die!

Ryan Wile Actually ESPN in December 2011 and Senior Analyst Buster Olney said this was the greatest game ever played. It wasnt just the 9th inning and beyond....that entire game had clutch hitting in every situation, defense when they needed it, and pitching in the right situations before the game got out of hand to keep it close. It literally had everything a baseball game could've had.
@deltasig419 жыл бұрын
+Omar Morales Luna What is so strange though, with all the clutch performances late in the game, the first 5 or 6 innings were a totally different story. Freese dropped a routine popup, Young botched a double play ball...It was ugly, for a World Series game. But, overall, best baseball game I've ever seen.

One of the greatest games I've ever watched, but also a very melancholy Series for me, as it was the first World Series played after my dad passed away. He was a ballplayer, playing semi-pro after WWII and even having an offer from the Boston Braves. He taught me and my brothers how to play, even though at first, it looked hopeless with me. He let us stay up extra late so we could see Hank Aaron break Babe Ruth's HR record. The only time he accepted favors from vendors as a valued client was when he did business with a company in Cincinnati, so he could fly me out to finally see my beloved Reds play in Riverfront Stadium. That happened to be the night Tom Browning pitched a perfect game. He passed along a love & appreciation of the game to me. The Cardinals won the World Series the year he was born. And the Cardinals won the World Series the year he died. Always a tinge of sadness for me whenever I see this Series. I miss you, Dad.

This game was unforgettable for so many reasons to me. You can thank Nelson Cruz for that. His head was not in the game when Freese hit what should have been the final out of the 9th inning. He was afraid of getting a boo-boo if he ran into the wall. But Rangers' fans can take solace in the fact that Cruz didn't damage his manicure.

My son is getting into sports and has really gravitated towards baseball. He wants to play every single day now. So now that he understands the rules of the game, I’ve been giving him some history lessons and the 2011 Cards playoff run was at the top of the list. Re-living this with him experiencing it for the first time, there are no words. Such an amazing thing that happened in October 2011. Pure magic.

This was the best World Series Ever. I was at the casino in Iowa watching the game and I was near a whole table full of Cardinals fans. My God they went nuts. Those are passionate fans. I was in love because the state to the west that I live in doesnt give a crap about baseball, given that they host the College World Series. Never did I ever see true baseball fans like that in a long time. I may be a Braves fan. But this was by far the best world series ever. Those Cardinal fans were so nice they bought me a drink given that they felt bad for me given that I choked to make the playoffs that year. Never forget how happy they were. Not to mention I hate Joe Buck. But he said the smartest thing about any team. 'They. Just. Won't. Go. Away.'

I don't know if he drinks, but he probably will never have to buy a beer there again! Incredible tying it with the triple and *then* winning it with the home run.
Being a cardinal fan and trust me even if I hate the cardinals you cannot sit here and tell me this isn't the greatest comeback in baseball history i know the '02 Angels were impressive but they chipped away at the lead from the 7th inning on the cardinals did this down to there last outs so amazing hope we see something like this again

As a Cardinals fan I stopped watching in the 9th inning. I Thought the game was lost. Decided to turn the TV back on to see what was going on. Just in time for David Freese's final home run in the 11th. Unbelievable. Went back and re-watched the whole thing. One of the best baseball games I have ever seen in my life.

Why turn it off in the 9th? I could maybe understand turning it off after the top of the 7th, but everything after that signaled that the Rangers were very vulnerable and struggling to get outs.

Are you by any chance related to the guy whose tail lights can be seen exiting the parking lot at Dodger Stadium in 1988 as Kirk Gibson's miracle HR sailed over the rightfield wall? SMH. The only way you get to witness epic comebacks is if you are prepared to watch until the bitter end. Turn it off early....meh, you deserve to miss it.

I probably won't attend to a single MLB game in my life. Watching this game, however, made me realize that you Americans got it good. This is as good as watching sport gets for me, seeing a game 6 World Series final from 7 years ago. Well, that and seeing Dodgers - Astros game 5 live on a tiny laptop screen in the morning hours.

There is no better feeling in sport than the excruciating build-up of tension when the crack of the bat inspires hope and then the release of ecstatic joy of a classic baseball game. Not sure a WS game can ever top the 9th and 10th of this wild game.

I will be content to never hear about this game again for the rest of my life. For the past 12 years it’s been 2011 this, one strike away that. I still remember sitting with several of my cousins and relatives in front of the TV watching this nightmare unfold. This year, this time, it’s time to put that undead corpse back in the ground for good. No more 2011. We need this. 3 more wins, let’s go Rangers.

Ya, I agree! These are the moments baseball fans dream about. I was a fan of the Mets in the early 1980s, living in CT, which was enough to put anyone's fanaticism to the test! But I moved to LA, and watched the Dodgers win in '88 (Gibson's home run -- YAY!). And now, living in RI since 2000, I've watched the Red Sox win it all four times. Not too shabby!

I was 30 years old and a massive cardinals fan when my girlfriend (also huge fan) and I watched this game. I didn't think my heart could take it either--and I was right. I ended up in the hospital for days the morning after game 7. Apparently I had given my self what the doctors called holiday heart. The stress of the game and the subsequent partying literally gave me temporary heart arrhythmia.

This may be the only time you can hear Joe Bucks love for St. Louis Cardinals come out in his voice. He said says "Freese has tied it, 7-7!" One the second 7 you can feel the emotion he's trying to stifle. You're the best, Joe.
