Palm up, finish high. That was the same approach that HOF Tony Gywnn used (best pure hitter in my lifetime, IMO). He'd also often say "swing the knob" (as opposed to "swing the bat"), allowing the bat head to follow and stay in the zone longer, when offering up advice to younger hitters.

I swear, he has to be one of the best hitters of all time, from 2005 to 2016 he hit over .300 every year except once, where he hit .292. Over 2,600 hits, over 450 HRs and of course a triple crown winner in 2012 and he is still playing, gonna reach 3,000 hits and 500 HRs mostly likely.

This is so true, it's so important to not roll your hands over early. If you look at Prince Fielder you'll see he never rolls his hands over, instead following through straight up over the shoulder ( an extreme example.) If you look closely Cabrera lets go of the bat before he can turn his right palm down, this is a major key to launch angle in my opinion.

For people that do not understand launch angle. It is simple. The angle the ball comes off the bat after being hit. There are certain ideal angles to maximize distance depending on spin imparted to the ball. Similar to golf, and probably analysis was inherited from golf. Does not guarantee more hits, just more distance (so maybe more home runs if hit hard enough). Maybe more pop-fly outs. There are a few factors that can influence the launch angle such as: 1) path/angle of the ball as it come to the plate; 2) path/angle of the bat as it hits the ball; 3) where on the ball the middle of the bat makes contact relative to middle of ball (at middle, below middle, above middle, etc.). It seems in the interview Miguel is saying he does not think about launch angle - just hits the way he hits. "Palm up" through contact area. This is classic hand position that all good hitters have. The wrists should role much later as the bat the finishes follow through, arms extend, and hips finish turning. "Finishing up", just means he attempts to have a slight upward trajectory on the bat bath prior to hitting the ball, which continues up during follow through (though he focuses on the follow through part of the swing in his head). Not possible to finish up if your bat path was trending down right before hitting the ball. Again, just common sense for hitting an object that is mostly trending on a downward path. His uniqueness is his amazing balance shown by motionless head, vision on the contact area, and timing where he waits to just the exact micro-second to swing. Absolutely no lunging at the ball - all turn once his front foot is planted.

How in the world are you suppose to swing down at the ball with your palm up? and then finish high... Just because it "feels" like he's going down to the ball, doesn't meant he actually is. There are plenty of videos of all the guys you just mentioned slo-smo swings here on youtube. Go find any video where they actually drive the ball while they hit the top of the ball "swinging down". you can't find it because it doesnt exist. They are free to explain their approach and what it "feels like" to them, but don't get it twisted, none of those guys swung down at the ball...

Can you imagine if Comerica Park Center field wasn’t 420 but say closer to 400 at least!? I’ve seen Cabrera launch hits at Comerica park where shit would die at the warning track and any other place would be a homer. But to win a Triple Crown almost back to back considering his 2nd MVP year was even better his 1st MVP year which is the year he won the triple crown. You put that guy in any Hitter friendly park and watch him blast 45+ homers a year if not more.

Not if you catch the bottom half of the ball. Your last line is the "phrase of the day". The issue for a downward swing which is the same for an upward swing occurs when don't swing through the ball. If I have a launch angle swing and pull off the ball at contact I'm going to have A LOT of infield pop ups. Just as pulling off at contact with a downward approach will have a lot of ground balls. I've always coached hitting the bottom half, palm up, swing through, finish high. If you swing through at the point of contact the ball actually sticks to the bat for a moment which is why finishing high is important because it's like you've caught the ball with your bat and are now throwing it up off of the bat, changing its directory. The ball doesn't simply bounce off the bat.

Disagree. The way he keeps his hands tight to his body as he fires his hips create a faster bat speed than if he let his hands drift from his body. Its physics. At the point of contact like a slingshot he fires his hands at the ball and the energy if opposing forces sends the ball out. I'm a tall, skinny dude that used knock 400 ft HRs. His size helps but its not the deciding factor.
