MLP Pony Theory - Will Spike Ever Be Allowed To Grow Up?

Comic book hoard. Omg Spike will literally be the biggest nerd in MLP XD As for the growing up thing, observing other dragons, I am assuming that like you said, Spike lost himself because his hoarding was going unchecked and he was growing up way too fast. I would guess that had he been born in a dragon enviornment, Spike's hoard would have been controlled by his parents. They would possibly already let him have a small hoard by his age, made up of random junk that he likes, but force him to keep it small, possibly making him give up objects if he wants a new one, teaching him to hoard that which is most important to him. Every year or every few years, he'd be allowed to make his hoard a little larger, causing him to grow up gradually and give his mind time to adjust.

Lunara Hunter Personally, I think dragons grow in their own time, just much slower then other creatures, hence their longevity. Hoarding things of value likely just accelerates the growth, hence why Spike returned to his normal size the moment he remembered being generous. If you think about it, this would also explain why there are so many smaller (teen) dragons like Ember and the others. And since they are barred from raiding Ponyville, this would also explain why they are smaller then the other dragons, the elder dragons who are older and wiser (and greedier) have large hoards and are unwilling to spare them to younger dragons to help spur their growth and give them more rivals. Since most dragons assume things of value means jewels and precious metals, that is what most dragons hoard. I think Spike will likely hoard books because he grew up as Twilights assisstant. Like he said, Spike is already collecting Comic books and he's still a 'baby' dragon. I think given time, he'll grow on his own.

First of all this theory is not actual from Dragon Lord episode when we see elder dragon who is completely rational. Also dragons never were exactly a monsters, just assholes. Anyway we can safely presume that dragons grow normally especially as Dragon Lord go retiring, what in fact maybe not normal for Spike who is already weird in many ways. In fact there is a theory that he may be in fact dragon counterpart of alicorn (we do know that they can alter the age) and way older then we think, as he only revert to egg (obscure sidenote.. In G1 Spike was Scorpan assistant who later stay with ponies and it may be this same Spike). Zacora here is not exactly reliable or opposite.. know too much about him.

Well there's a difference between growing up -- maturing -- and just growing in size. I suppose hoarding only affects the latter. Maturing will happen over time, presumably growing *wings* is part of that. Greed-growing only gives size. And I agree on the collecting aspect. Maybe he'll grow wings when he figures what he wants to collect?

anwer to this theory: yes, spike can grow up. why? remember in season 1 ep 23 when spike "hatched" he was a baby? and now look at spike. He grew up! or twilight used a spell to make him grow up such as when spike "hatched" he was giant because of twilights magic.

There is another way. As seen in Twilight's cutie mark story. Magic. I can see it going like this: the wonderbolt get defeated like a bug. The elements are called in but end up losing so badly that the royal guards are force to fight but only being use to not fighting they fail leaving the princess to fight but when they fail spike begs for them to change him. But they refused to do so because it is impossible until one of the Cmcs points out that twilight did it as a unicorn. Spike knows how to get under twilight's never and does so until she turns him into an adult.

Aside from my new Brony status, I'm also a hardcore D&D geek (lucky me, I know). If MLP is canon with the best established source on dragons and all things draconic, it should be noted that dragons do not reach adulthood until they enter their second century, starting at 101 years. It's sad to consider, but it is unlikely that any of the Mane Six- with the possible exception of Twilight, if alicorns are immortal- would live to see Spike grow up. Bummer.

I suspect that greed for dragons triggers a rush of hormones for dragons, this wouldn't be the first time we see magic get influenced by emotions, magic of friendship works using the emotion of love between friends , personally I like your theory as hoarding a specific thing could make a lot of sense, as it may trigger deferent emotions than uncontrollable hoarding or in a deferent rate. althought there is an other kind of greed one that i thing many would like explored , what if spike grows up by greed for Rarity and only Rarity

I like it. What we've seen so far, the grown dragons don't seem all THAT monstrous. Spike's first show of dragon greed made him a hoarder, since he didn't care what he was getting... the others were collectors.I think it's quite reasonable for a dragon to get angry when someone's stealing their property. Especially from their collection. So a normal dragon growth would be like that of a collector. They MIGHT have just paid the red dragon with gold bits to move if they'd thought of it. (Since the red one apparently likes gold).The green one collects gems. Possibly could have been pacified by a gift of MORE gems than what Spike ate. (it really wasn't that many).Spike... he likes to EAT gems but... what I think Spike will collect is books. Twilight has ALWAYS given him books as gifts, plus they lived in a library, so it sort of makes sense he'd develop a collectors taste for them. And Spike can't wait to get it, and at that point it CAN'T be just childish curiosity as to what he'll get. Another show for this tendency is at the Faire where Twilight was trying to sell books but no price was good enough for *Spike*. Twilight ended up agreeing due to sentimental value. The comics Spike liked to read are part of the literature collection as well.This may also be part of the comic failure of Spike trying to serve Apple Jack. AJ doesn't have enough books -- and Spike really can't change into collecting Apples instead.So... yea... I think Spike will collect books. He probably needs to realize his collection topic (much like Ponies need to realize their talent to get their cutie mark) in order to get his wings. Since Spike doesn't have any while all other dragons we've seen DO have wings.

I read an interesting fanfic about this very topic. In said fic, it is stated that a Dragon's innate greed makes them desire mates the same way some men desire women as trophies. This lead to an awkward circumstance where Spike had to make a harem with the Mane Six, and he started hoarding his family as it grew. His time spent being raised by Ponies made him actually value each new member of his family, and his love for his children and grandchildren allowed him grow into a caring adult Dragon. For the life of me, I can't remember the name of fic, but that was certainly an interesting take on Dragon Greed.

Spike would have originally outlived Twilight because she was a normal Unicorn. And out of grief filled the hole in his heart with material possessions. Thus maturing. But now Twilight is an Alicorn, so now it's a battle of who can survive longer. But there is a hole in my theory. Dragons generally live longer because of size right? Massive creatures always have longer lifespans, it's why dwarf hamsters live a couple of months whilst whales can be over a century old. Spike has stunted growth due to not being able to horde, so he may live a life only slightly longer than a large lizard.

Twilight changed when she became an Alicorn as well. I think sometime in the series, they should make an episode where Spike grows up into a bigger dragon. This could help them to fight battles as well, since the elements are no longer with them, if a villain appeared they would have to battle them. (Unless they use that Rainbow Power shit...)

Maybe he may never grow up because of Twilights struggle to spell open his egg. And when she did it from the shock of the rainboom it may have had an unknown side affect. i beleve spike will grow up, just at a different rate than other dragons. He has already grown a few years, from when he was a newly hatched baby, to now a good few years older. I just think he'll grow up a bit slower than other dragons. As we saw, when dragons hoard, they get a quick boost of growth, basically a handful of years of growth, in a short amount of time. I think spike will just grow up naturally, like a bit every year, give or take, slower than dragons, but similar to other species in mlp liker ponies and griffins.

well the whole greed growth hasn't been proven to be the only way for a dragon to grow up. I mean we get to see teenage dragons yet when Spike got greedy he became a full grown dragon within a day and I doubt the teenage dragons would limit themselves to how much they collect for their hoards?....So in my opinion it make take longer then a greed growth spurt ,but I believe Spike can grow up with out being greedy.

Well there is that one episode where we do actually see Spike as a baby right when he hatched out of the egg. If you see Spike today from the moment when he hatched out of the egg, he would have had to have an obsessional greed of something else, in order to have grown. So if he had a greed that made him grow, why didn't he just keep a greed for that stuff, if he is all nice and stuff today. So I don't really think that the zebra, is right about the growing over greed stuff, and DragonTrainer201. But I am still confused on why if when he becomes of a greed over Equestria or something like that, he had grown so much. But I also think that dragons in MLP just slowly, reallllllly slowly, grow over time, and just love owning so much of one section of items depending on what dragon it may be.

No, he either was temporary transformed by Twilight magic or after reawakening he move to his proper age (he may be ancient) and then deliberately force himself to revert in baby stage. After all we don't see any other example of such effect and this theory is old not including stuff from recent show. This effect may be only skill specific for a Spike.

Sure, he may be friendly and cute, and I respect your theory. But, there are lots of facts I've got to tell you about him, about what I've always known and discovered a long time ago; Spike's been the cause of many errors, mistakes... throughout the entire show. Why? Well, it's because of the Spike-fans! They were just sick and tired of Spike's abuse, horrible treatments, how he mostly spent his appearances in the shadows... In the episode "The Crystal Empire", Twilight was the only one, all along, who saved the empire from Sombra, not Spike. She knew where the Crystal Heart was, she found the hidden passage to it, she made her way up the stairs with the help of her magic that allowed her to travel upside-down in light's speed... (Spike could NOT, he wouldn't have made it to the top himself, he was already exhausted and dragons can't have or use magic.) she risked herself by failing one test that was given to her by one of Equestria's rulers, Celestia... Twilight TOLD Spike to bring the heart back. Actually... that magic-absorbing trap was NEVER even meant to be there, in the first place! That was only something which was added by the Spike-fans, mostly a Just-In-Case thing so Spike could be the one who brings the heart back, although Twilight forced him to do so, herself! And, you know, there's also a funny but catastrophic thing a clumsy and goofy character like Spike would do, he'd EAT the heart. The episode "Equestria Games" sure had major errors, as well. Twilight was the one who saved Crystal Empire and she was meant to get all the credit. But, as I said, we've got those Spike-fan's to blame for making him the hero, instead. which was a HUGE mistake. And I've seen a fan pic of Spike of the scene where he screws up with the Cloudsdale Anthem song, drawn by someone so-called "TexasUberAlle's" on Derpibooru, where he/she directly boasts that Spike's the "bravest character in the show"... Bullshit! There's NOTHING brave about that, and Spike's NEVER meant to be that. Sure, he kept singing even he knew he was doing it wrong, though he actually did that only for the Spike-fans' sake. The more Spike sang, the angrier and ashamed the audience became. Plus, it was NOT the Cloudsdale Anthem he sang, but "it keeps going on, la-la-la... and-- I-I wish it was over now"... instead. And last but not least, the part where that giant ice-block was falling down into the stadium was also another big, stupid excuse to show Spike saving the day, why they even used arrows that turned anything to ice wherever it hits, and the ice-cloud was already inside the stadium and was already taken care of by the ponies and successfully moved it down towards the field. Although you could see that the ice-cloud wasn't even THAT big, either! And another fun thing is that "Spike's adored in Crystal Empire" but then totally embarrassed there, and is HATED in Cloudsdale. But, the episode wasn't even focused on the Equestrian Games, ever. All of that was only mentioned and seen in the background! It was all just about Spike... Totally another trash episode written from the Spike-fans... which for sure was actually based on their own FANFICTIONS. Other episodes based on Spike such as "Gauntlet of Fire" surely were written by the Spike-fans, based on their own FANFICTIONS, as I said earlier. The dragonlord was going to retire, and the remaining dragons start participating in a race to win the scepter, but Garble's gang had only a plan about invading Equestria just so they could get something to sleep on instead of rocks! And where did Garble's big hatred to ponies come from? What did they ever do to him?! Did one of them once push him so he fell into a mud puddle and laughed at him as he was only passing by and minded his own business? Twilight, herself, couldn't handle those weak, non-powerful, and non-magical creatures like Garble and his gang, a couple of goddamn teenage dragons... because in "Twilight's Kingdom", she confronted Tirek just fine, and other episodes like "Canterlot Wedding", where she and the rest of the Mane Six were fighting off hordes of changelings. All of this literally proves that those are just simple and stupid excuses just to show Spike do something good for once in his life, only for the Spike-fans' sake, instead of standing in the background, doing nothing, licking a lollipop, picking his nose... and the result was that the whole show completely became a complete wreck because of all that. Episodes like "Princess Spike", where Spike completely messes up, truly was the fitting kind of role Spike's always supposed to have, and what you call it a "Spike Episode". Of course, there wasn't even meant to be any "Spike Episodes", AT ALL. That's not all. Rumors are going on about that some Spike-fans even like to imagine this "Celestia's Spike's mother" bullshit from ONE of Lauren's ideas of "Celestia raising Spike" after Twilight hatched him, although she said that NONE of her ideas were meant to be considered canon, ever. And it's gotten FAR way into their skulls... It does NOT make Celestia a mother to any new-born creature or NEVER had any of those "motherly" moments since it isn't the same species or when you're just looking after it for someone ELSE! NONE of that was NEVER mentioned or proven in the show! And Lauren never even said ANYTHING that Celestia's Spike's mother, either! Twilight hatched him, which she was meant to do, and she was supposed to look after Spike herself, but she was only a filly, so Celestia did it FOR her. And the only thing Celestia did that involved raising him was only to make sure he was just FED, that's all. Of course, not a single evidence about Spike's origin was ever revealed, about where his egg came from, and I don't think Lauren would just say that Spike's parents "just died", or that his egg was "stolen", or that his parents just "dumped him", or that if his egg was just simply "left on the doorstep"... No offense, but what exactly is the point and reason of having Spike in the show, at all, if there's no backstory of him and his origin was that he was just simply brought to be used as a test for Twilight by hatching him to get into Celestia's Magic School? Especially since no backstory information about Spike wasn't ever revealed... There are too much drama and wars about those Spike-fans whining about his bad treatments, his bad character development, and talking delusional bullshit about him. He was only meant to be a simple sidekick, a character who provides comic relief, to be used as a punching bag, the clumsy little character who screws up all the time... Plus, how come Celestia was able to train Spike to do this "letter sending" thing to him, though Lauren said that dragons were MYSTERIOUS to ponies, and knew NOTHING about them? And WHY him? Isn't Twilight, herself, supposed to handle the letters since she's a unicorn and Celestia's student, after all? Imagine when there's a vital situation and Twilight must report to Celestia, but she CAN'T! Why? Because Spike's not around! So, I'll simply say that Spike, his new horrible character development, and this "Celestia is Spike's mother" bullshit is a complete VERMIN to the show. All the more reason why he shouldn't have been in the show, either. The show would've been WAY better off WITHOUT him.
