While Twilight does "parade around in dresses", it works here because it's presented in a negative light. And not just by Twilight's uncomfortable expression. This episode highlights how vapid, hollow and misdirected celebrity-induced fads really are. Imo they pulled it off really well. They celebrated Rarity's artistic talent as a designer while ALSO poking fun at people who use fashion exclusively as a way to show off their social status. FiM thoroughly impressed me again.

As soon as Rarity said "When I saw that she worked in all the finest boutiques in Canterlot" I immediately wondered why this pony went through so many jobs. Usually when you are good at something you stay in one place because they entice you to, This sounded like she was fired from every job she had.

To be fair, rarity only designed dresses based on CANTERLOT. Luna and Celestia live there, but Cadence is living in the crystal empire. And twilights dress isn't based on her, but rather her coronation stained glass IN CANTERLOT CASTLE. So it makes sense that Cadence was left out.

I loved this episode so much and... as much as I DO love the old MLP songs I feel so much more emotion packed behind Rules of Rarity as a song. It feels like there's simply so much more character depth placed into it, I mean I get it, art of the dress is an incredible song but I feel like it gives initial perspective on who rarity truly is as a character being part of the first season, while ROR let's us see how the events of the episode affect the character we've grown to know an love. ROR shows us all of rarity's musings and thoughts, her ups and downs in a single song in a way that I love. Much of it is a matter of taste, but I just can never get enough of ROR.

Personally, I'm glad the episode did not have a 'BOOM' moment with one of Rarity's or some other pony's exagerated outburst. It's a lot more accurate to reality. Art and creation rarely go down fighting with fanfare. Far more often, creative endeavors peter out like a campfire, quietly and with little notice until it's too late to start them back up; other times it can be like an old car - push it too hard and eventually it'll just give up the ghost, unable to continue and little more than a hunk of scrap and junk.

I found the joke at the end of the episode to be the fact that they JUST got done with that and someone is still freaking out over it when other dresses are there. Might not be wording that right but I found it funny enough to make me chuckle a little.

I really like the take on Rarity's destiny. It seems to be an overall theme the show is going with: the Mane Six, having learned so much from each other, are destined to change their respective fields by leading through example. The most literal example is Twilight, especially now that she has a student of her own, but Spike has already changed the political situation of dragonkind for potentially the infinitely better, and Rainbow Dash now has some influence over how the Wonderbolts (who are kind of jerks,) do business as a member.
