I feel like these two seasons really lay bare the thematic differences between the Mythic GM Emulator and Ironsworn. The reason why Simon Sucks and Arn gets all these really awesome moments is because Mythic focuses on randomness to try and emulate the GM's hidden plans and Ironsworn uses randomness to create a narrative . Simon suffers at the hand of random encounters and Arn gets the benefit of building up a tense narrative through failures that up the stakes and ultimately pay off with really dramatic moments.

While I understand your point - I think we would need to see another series of Trevor with Mythic to see how it goes a second time. I say this because I feel that some of the difference may well be down to Trevor's growing skill in creating, playing, narrating, voicing and presenting the show. Not to mention editing, filming and more. He is amazing and doubtlessly learning all the time.

I came here to see how Ironsworn could be played, and I liked what I saw very much. Then I tried season 1 and 3, and had a harder time enjoying them. Ironsworn having the randomness for building the narrative built into the resolution system for the character's actions makes the experience very fluid and natural. With the GM emulator, the random elements feel very contrived and come as another layer on top the randomness of a base system. While the usage of oracles feels natural in Ironsworn, I find it breaks the flow of action with the other systems. The emulator may be great for actual solo play though, but I find it inferior for this particular show.

Let's not forget that Simon had some pretty shitty rolls, too. Arn just get high momentum and scores strong hits in a good pace. His fight against the half-giant was quick and clean. If it was with Simon, he'd have broken the spear again and get saved by a ghost or something.
@twls153 Жыл бұрын
I think one thing that makes narrative more focused on Ironsworn is the Progress track, which is a thing the Mythic Emulator Second Edition, released some days ago started using too, as a variant rule.

2:14 and 11:12. "Almost the worst thing you can roll..." happening almost twice in one episode. Masterful episode. Just named an NPC in my solo campaign Ragnar Kalapunki, a small homage to a great hero.

What I love is that while he had a lot of character developement obviously, none of it feels like it was out of nowhere. At his very first encounter with Simon, it was established that he's a "Protector of the downtrodden" (not remembering the exact phrase Trevor rolled but it was the gust of it). He was hellbent and ready to go to lengths normal people would see unreasonable to fulfil his contract about hunting down Simon. But he wasn't just a random madman, he was ready to listen to reason and reconsider things when learned that Simon was a man honor himself. When it was revealed at the last episode that he's actually an ironsworn from North, I was like "okay, that's actually lines up and explains literally everything about him"

I'm glad that, despite Ironsworn not having the list of characters mechanic that Mythic has, you're able to occasionally bring back past characters. Really helps keep things connected in a more complete and immersive way.

Hogvandil is all right, he just needs to catch an ancient elven elevator to the top of mountain. A shame we won't see the most epic battle of all, between beings equally elder: Hogvandil, Thaugolos... and Refr, the Crooked! I'd bet on Refr, of course.

Oh oh oh! May I humbly suggest that the next episode be (at least in part) a vision quest brought on the Veslidi's whispering? My instinct is telling me that somewhere within that tower lies one last piece of the puzzle (whatever that may be) Arne is going to need to have a chance against the dragon. Without the spear's insanity-inducing guidance, Arne would have no chance of finding it on his own!
