One reason is the number of weight classes too. While boxing has lots of weight classes, MMA has great jumps in weight like 155-170-185-205

the thing is that the reason that makes mma exciting and boxing boring is the weight clases. More weigh clases means less weight cutting WICH IS GOOD but also less competition. ¿ How should we fix this?

Hi Gabriel, this video of you is so valuable for me. I just started my Muay Thai career in Hong Kong and won my first open fight. But during that fight I felt like shit and powerless because I couldn't recover from my weight cut. I am 77kg shredded and I cut down to 70kg for my fight by dehydrating for like 4 kg in the last two days. even I had a night for recovery after the weigh in, I felt like my power did not come back and my head was just so heavy. I am now thinking to move up on the weigh class or slowly diet down to about 73-74kg. My favourite fighter is Buakaw and I heard that he did not cut weight too ( you must know more than me!). But anyways, your video is really helpful for my muay thai journey. It will be great if you reply champ

My 2nd MMA fight, I was 19 years old and fought at 125 lbs -- which was my walking weight at that time -- and my opponent was 130 lbs who cutted weight, and since this was a pro-am event it was accepted since it was just "5 lbs difference". Next thing I knew, I am wrestling with a 155'er. Luckily, he was a striker and did not have enough technique on the ground, which mostly made his advantage a bit useless. It was really hard, I won the fight, but I can't imagine how harder it will be if he has almost the experience that I have in BJJ. This became my reason why I bulked up, I walk around 138 lbs now, and will eventually reach 140 -- which was my goal.

When I was wrestling in college, they also did body fat checks and basically told us the lowest weight we could safely wrestle. I thought it was interesting when Fury put on extra weight when he fought Wilder in the second fight. It helped a bit with the power but i think he did it to lean on him in the clinch. Idk I don’t think it’s worth it personally I try and fight at 178 and I’m like 6ft 1 and I weigh naturally like 183 so it isn’t too much stress on me. I only really stress about trying not to spar much 2 weeks before a fight or at all bc I’m white and I bruise kinda easily so with just a right punch I can get a black eye even if it doesn’t hurt so I try my best to avoid sparring so I can’t fight on my fight day because of it.

I watch a ton of bodybuilder videos because those guys seem to understand the science behind body mechanics very well in terms of strength gaining, size gaining, and weight manipulation. Especially for the guys that compete at lower weight classes in bodybuilding competitions. Some of these guys are able to cut 35 to 40 pounds to "peak", meet their weight, and then gain back size. These cuts are sometimes done in only 5 days. Massive dehydration based method involving a lot of fat and sodium. The big problem with dehydration cuts is the fact that connective tissue of the body has a high amount of water in them that is lost during these cuts. Then they are put through very stressful loads in a short amount of time after. I honestly think that the main reason for so many bad hips in wrestlers and MMA fighters is due to these weight cut demands of the sport to be competitive. 70 to 80% of cartilage consist of water. That is what's protecting joints!

how much strain do they put on themselves when they are flexing and putting on a show? I am sure it takes a lot out, but I doubt its anywhere near what fighters must be ready for to go through a match. I mean bodybuilders can afford to do that more for a competition because they just have to look good, not get in the ring or cage with someone else who is trying to knock you out, or submit you.

@10gsms Khabib is definately 185 - 200 pounds out of camp and 170ish during camp. He nearly died every time he made weight and is in the top 15-20 fighters that cut the most weight in MMA (at least the UFC). What I really don't understand is how Tibau gets down to 155. The dude has been confirmed to weigh up to 220 out of camp and literarly has to cut 33% of his body weight to make that cut (65 pounds, wtf). I seriously don't understand how that's even humanly possible without dying, but I'm guessing he uses illegal diuretics to somehow hit 185ish, adjusts to that weight during camp, then cuts even more.

@10gsms Oh, I know. That's why I said he was somewhere in between 185 - 200 out of camp. He's been confirmed to be 200 pounds once or twice (probably when he doesn't fight for quite some time and gets a bit more fat than usual). And ye, he's probably around 200 pounds right no when he knows he doesn't have to cut anymore, but I'd reckon he spent most of his career at 190, like Chandler (who admitted to being 193 out of camp right before his fight with Oliveira).

I agree with everything said except not mentioning MMA has these HUGE weight gaps in classes and imo boxers at the top do cut insane amounts… for instance Errol Spence Jr who is WW champ walks around out of camp at 175-180 in camp maybe 168ish but definitely is cutting 20 pound to hit 146.5 hence why he has so much ridiculous power and often mentions going up in weight no questions. 20 lbs seems to be the average cut for all disciplines (imo) but if you diet properly your “look” on weigh in day is slightly diff. No matter what you look gutted and sucked out … but the guys looking sick AF are coming into the scales last minute ; just my opinion. There is a reason Floyd Mayweather fought 147 for nearly 15 years but the 7 years prior was fighting as low as 130… cause he was cutting 17 lbs and once he beat everyone at those lower weights he decided to not cut the weight for bigger fights AND to avoid the torture of a 15-25 lb cut. Hey Gabriel, love your videos so I've got a question. This might be long, but in essence, how do you deal with bad training sessions, the ones were nothing is really bad, but you're just OFF. Maybe sometimes it's just that your head is preoccupied, and that happens, but I personally hate those sessions were I just can't put my finger on what's wrong. All of a sudden, my cardio drops, my speed and precision plummet, and when I try to push through it I fail halfway through, disappointing myself and those who train with me. I usually ignore them and move on better than before since they're so rare, but it would be better if those sessions were even rarer. You seem like a genuine guy, and I'd love to hear your thoughts, maybe even in a video! Thanks a lot

I have competed professionally in Muay Thai and mma. Gabriel Varga is 100% correct with this information...discovering this process about weight cutting specifically in mma just about ruins competing in it, and completely eliminates fighting on a shorter notice...which as a fighter can be very disappointing and hard to explain..you’re a lean guy with low body fat? Now ur TOO small for ur division- big muscles up wrestler guy? Have fun dealing with kidney stones...there’s no middle ground and the body issues it creates in young men from jumping back and forth on the scale all the time is really sad and hard to deal with. Last but not least it’s hard to respect that fact that mma fighters are fighting like..2-3 times a year these days? Meanwhile kickboxing and Muay Thai these guys are out here constantly proving themselves and staying more sharp and competing more often...just my 10 cents sorry guys LOL

Hands high for the first 1 minute to test out his power and see if it's heavy, normal or less than you're use to. Once you access that choose your game plan. If he hits hard avoid big exchanges in the pocket. Utilize lots of footwork and fakes. But maybe the size won't be a big issue. I used to fight at 145 and walk around 135. My skill level got me through. Be confident and adjust after the first minute of the fight.

It's just something that's happened over years of people learning to hack the rules. They need to use ONE style dehydration testing or put weigh-ins on the same day. Something to keep fighters safer and stopping the massive weight cuts. Hopefully promotions and athletic commissions step up before someone gets seriously hurt. Actually too late. There's already been some very damaged fighters from weight cuts.

[TL;DR If you read it, you'll wonder what you just read. Wierd people online some times.] What if weigh in was half an hour before the fight, you don't weigh you don't fight, you don't fight you don't get paid. What if there was no pre fight show, no pretending to have beef with your friends and the fans just understood that these are just fighters they're not fighting over some beef it's their job to fight so the fans in knowing that don't lust for some cheesy sh¡t talking and thus the promotions don't push for it and don't have pre fight shows and weigh ins are just part of the fight.., what if that was MMA, boxing, kickboxing, martial arts tournaments, etc... than fighting would be as I wish it were. That's probably an unpopular oppnion but that's how I feel it should be. Do I believe all the beef is fake, no... but half the real beef was instigated and I didn't have to happen... do I think that beefs don't make the fights more interesting? No, they do... but only the ones you can tell are real. Those shouldn't be shown off, they should be special rare moments that we catch onto. Call outs are okay... but schedualing time before the fight for the fighters to talk sh*t isn't legit.., oh my bad that time isn't intended for that it's ... yeah yeah sure but we all know that's bs.., it is for prefight shi+ talking and you know it, reguardless of the official story. Promotions try'n ta promote. It's what they do, I just don't need to be sold on a fight. Them: We have this fight schedu-- Me (interrupting): How much? Them: This is gonna be such a great figh-- Me (interrupting again): Yeah you had me at fight, how much? Them: Over $50 Me: Well finantially that's not an option for me, so piracy it is unless someone wants to fight me over it in which case I still get a free fight, so win win. Except for the pore soul who made it to the end of my rant. I feel for you, but yoy had fair warning.

Boxing doesn't have participants who have big weight cuts; what is this guy talking bout? Everyone is trying to get an advantage. Spence jr wake around 175lbs or so fights at 147lbs. Mikey Garcia walks around 150lbs and fought at 126lbs to 147lbs but the guys at 147lbs come in 15 to 20 pounds over on fight night so it’s hard for Mikey win as those are solid bigger pros. Terrance Crawford posted a video of him weighing 177lbs before training camp and fights at 147lbs. Scott Quiqq fought Valdez at 126lbs and on fight night Quigg weighed 144lbs that’s almost 4 weight classes above the weigh in class. Canelo walk around at 170 ish n cut to 147 to fight at welterweight when he was in that weight class.
