I love stude no.2 by Chopin is very enjoyable. I had one upper intermediate student for 10 years, who was working on it.❤ He started with me when he was 10 years old, and he left at age 20. ❤

Thank you Greg for this tutorial. I enjoyed very much. For Chopin Etude, I am only learning op10#1, op10#3. And still keep working on & off for them. Thankful to hear this video.

Great video. Have you seen the godowsky and hamelin arrangements of this piece? They both put the 3-4-5 scale in the left hand, and in Hamelin's version he combines 10/2 with 25/4 and 25/11. Where the LH is 10/2's right hand and the RH is 25/11's right hand. It's crazy. Ridiculously complicated polyrhythms and counterpoint.

An interesting question is how Chopin chose the skills that he wanted students to hone through etudes. Were these skills really necessary for competently playing Bach and Mozart or were they chosen because of the greater technical difficulty that began to appear with Beethoven, the early works of Liszt and Chopin’s own music?

WOW! Thanks for the brilliant points! All the examples were helpful and please know that even if the example is known and simple to musicians, your approach and use of them in the related context are educational and good teaching samples too, so I personally do appreciate the pedagogical aspect of them! (in a nutshell, please don't exclude them! They are working well😊) The fingering analysis was so mind-opening! Listening to this, I always wondered what spectacular difficulty was involved for the scale performance when piano pupils have to master Hanon exercises and those types of finger-works much ahead of these etudes. Indeed I should confess "the monster" doesn't reveal itself to a non-performer (and even a pianist who might not yet have tasted this piece) that obviously haha! I think there must be concerts just dedicated to the under-rated pieces like this one and Etude no. 6 of this opus! Oh the bridge was shocking to me! I could never imagine it was only by the right hand, to my ears it was always the same hand division pattern as the rest of this piece; the demanded flow of sound for the right-hand chords is really amazing! As a pianist, it might seem normal to you, but to ears, it is like looking at a magician, I checked on you a few times to make sure my eyes were working properly and you were actually not using your left hand😂 I will need your future tutorial videos for my listening self-tutorial purpose haha! Also, Thank you for the excellent explanation of the dynamic exchange in part B, I could finally discover the overall syncopation feeling that is created as a result of that call-response game between the two hands' roles and it owes very much to that dynamic phrasing (beyond the melodic phrasing), that you uncovered and highlighted so well! I couldn't find it for my understanding of Pollini's interpretation. It's now a newly discovered island rising up for me in this oceanic etude. Again.... I am heading my work today, full-handed and well-nourished after a treat of your analysis sessions! Thank you!👏

I just started studying this etude. Releasing the middle voices on time is essential to make the crossovers in the right hand. At first, I was trying to sustain the middle voices making it impossible to play.

Hi Greg. The most important is that the finger tips feel touching and close to the keys ( floating arm), but we move from whole arm. Am i correct? If we try to activate or just move from fingers, then the wrist got blocked and the fingers could not move freely. Is my concept correct?
@gregniemczuk
@gregniemczuk 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, 100%!!
@ottohadinata1978
@ottohadinata1978 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah. My previous concept was wrong. I always tried to just move from fingers. As a consequences, my fingers feel weak and the sound is not broadened and not ringing. It is not free. I am trying to explore more about the rotation, circular wrist, drop arm motion to get the feel of the whole arm, also i am trying to breathing to move my arm. So i can feel my support is from my arm. It is not easy but i think slowly i am getting better. I always remind myself. Be prepared, touching the keys and try to move from the arm. Be aware that the wrist is not locked. If it is locked, it can be the fingers tip are not touching or are not ready. Or it can be trying to move just from fingers. I am trying to prepare my hands ( my fingers) and when my hands are ready ( be aware on the hand shape as well), feel not move from fingers but from arm.

Interesting, but you play it terribly. I guess you just haven't touched it in a while. I can see some interesting questionable hand movements. And lastly you don't have to play it that fast to sound good, considering the instrument comfort. If you want to listen to an absolutely wrong in a sense, but for me the most beautiful performance, I recommned listening to V. Margulis. ❤ Another voicing level. And of course nobody plays it faster than D. Shishkin, also mindblowing.

Thank you. Yes, well, I have a huge problem with this etude because I've learnt it when I was 16 years old at the music school using a totally wrong technique, being all stiff and tensed.... After that I NEVER played it any more and just brought it back for this huge project of analyses of all Chopin music. Now my technique of playing is totally different but Unfortunately in this etude all the bad habits are coming back and it makes me frustrated and depressed.... Especially because I'm preparing to record all the Etudes and this one will be the biggest challenge for me.... Anyway, of course I know the recordings which you mentioned. Thanks for your comment!

As a pianist you lack a lot of tehnique!How and why?!
@rachm06
@rachm06 8 ай бұрын
i call this etude "career destroyer" because of several pianists messing it during competitions. I would avoid to play it in public since it's really easy to just "let go" the right hand relying only on muscle memory, but then if any mistake accours it's a nightmare to be back on rails! Just my opinion.
@gregniemczuk
@gregniemczuk 8 ай бұрын
To the point! Indeed, that's not a competition piece. But it improves the technique a lot!
