As if that doesn't happen to every champ when they lose the title. Important to note that the deal breaker wasn't them refusing to raise fighter pay overall or to give them all health insurance- it was him not being guaranteed enough money regardless of whether he won or lost. All that stuff about caring for all the other fighters in general was just virtue signaling, and apparently, he wasn't confident enough in his ability to beat Jon to take the deal that would've seen him getting paid enough that he was willing to forget about boxing. I think they were both nervous to fight each other, probably scared to the degree that it's smart to be, but I don't think either of them would've refused if they were incentivized *heavily enough*. Take what you will from that last bit They announced Francis's departure simultaneously with Jon vs Ciryl because Jon was there waiting on them to reach a deal with Francis, and if he did accept a lesser deal (may be the case, I missed it if that was ever actually reported or confirmed), then he had to, because it wasn't as big of a fight. He didn't have the leverage of holding that fight over them, like he does now with Tom. I'm not saying I'm super confident that Jon will fight Tom, not at all, but he is using negotiating tactics, and that does indicate at least some level of openness to it. Why try and negotiate for more money on something you are just flat out, completely unwilling to do

Jon's previous "hinting at retirement" tweet talking about not having to work again after this year and retiring at 37 is exactly in line with this and exactly what I said at the time. It's a negotiating tactic. I do think he Reyes should've gotten the decision, but there is validity to the notion that he *may* not have fought to his full potential in those fights due to underestimating them, and that having that fear again at HW could've helped him get more disciplined in training. People's worst fights always come when they underestimate their opponent, and that seems to be even more true for the greats. Reyes was kind of a though stylistic matchup in hindsight, too, though. So who knows. I don't think that's an entirely fair criticism of Reyes, skill wise. His fall seemed to be more mental than talent based. He had climbed the mountain and beat the arguable goat, only to get robbed in the decision. I can imagine that being tough to deal with and how it could really mess with someone's ability to see and believe in the possibility of reaching the top again. I was really glad to see him get the win in Louisville (in person, too, my first event), and I hope the Smith fight happens because that's very winnable for him. Also, this is kind of a side note, but I always like to throw it out there - I do think Stipe is gonna KO Jon
