I am 20 and I still have no exams passed. I always thought it is too late for me to be one since I heard many high school students pass exam P. I studied during spring break and took exam P when I was 19. I failed with a score of 4 and got discouraged. I am still working on my degree and never had a chance to study. I just want to tell everyone that there are a million reasons to cry, but one thing you will not regret is never giving up, fighting your battles, working hard, and trying.

Long time no see! I feel pretty alone when I handled with IFM since you took MFE at that time. But, you are my power of going forward! I have passed three SOA exams, but since I am not familiar with the situation of America, I still not start my internship. I am hesitating that whether I go SOA or CAS. So, I would pause for a while by pursuing a graduate degree. I definitely will come back and start again! Keep focusing！

Hey Alex, been following for over a year..big big fan of your content. I’ve been thinking about creating some of my own content. . Quick background: I’m about to take IFM (passed p and fm), and I have an internship set up with Lincoln financial in the summer, so for now it seems like I’ll be going down the soa path. I’d likely pick up where you left off at ifm, since there’s hardly any youtube content on that, let alone stam, ltam, etc. I have no content experience lol. I would enjoy just helping the community out even if it’s minimal content. Thoughts/concerns would be awesome, thanks.

Definitely use Mahler's manual. It's the best resource for that exam. First time I used TIA and wasn't impressed with most of the sections, I used Mahler the second time and passed. Good luck on that one, it's much tougher than people think going into the exam!

I was waiting for this video since you posted that message a month ago, I'm glad to see you back and that you're doing well! Like everyone said, your videos have been very helpful for exam P and FM and I find so much value in these videos about your career experience, exam related or not. Also, congratulations on passing MAS I, that's a big one! I can't wait for that new exam 5 content. I think that it would be helpful for Exam STAM takers too, since the SOA added some intro to Ratemaking and reserving to the syllabus.

Not sure if you've purchased study materials yet but i'd recommend getting Mahler's study manual for MAS-1. Go through it front to back and do all of his practice exams. Triple check that you filled in your scantron correctly, and read the question again after you think you have the answer. The toughest part for me with that exam was the time constraint... 4 hours for 45 questions wasn't enough time IMO bc i have a tough time letting questions go. If you can't answer a question immediately, just move on. That test is really tough, take it very seriously.

Same for you I'm guessing? Also, I'm still just getting into the material, so for a future video I'd love to either see some kind of syllabus overview or maybe a ranking of the most difficult topics on 5. Thanks for tuning in Jonny! I wanted to knock MAS-II out but there aren't many good study materials for it and I didn't want to dig through all the different source materials. Anyways, it's really refreshing to study something I use everyday at work. I too am still working through the material but I find that if I can explain it to an audience, I understand it much clearer. I'll keep your recommendation in mind, best of luck to us both!

Is it reasonable to take exam 5 right after IFM, before both MAS I & II?

AllieOat it’s doable. MAS1 will provide you with knowledge of GLMs, while MAS2 will provide you with credibility theory. Both of which are used for exam 5 but the theory of each isn’t directly tested. Others have done it and passed.

Hasn’t changed too much since I always aim to understand the material vs memorization. I have taken much better notes this time vs past exams. I have almost 200 handwritten pages, so far. I’m almost through the material so I can start doing a ton of practice problems soon. Doing problems is the best way to learn for me. I feel pretty good about this on, it helps that much of the material is what I actually do at work. I’m happy that this exam is handwritten too, partial credit will be my friend if I make silly computational errors.

I'm at mercer right now which is health consulting but I'm more interested in property and casualty at a carrier. I have P and FM done and am currently studying for IFM. Do you wanna refer me to Nationwide? :D
