One thing I found extremely helpful when I learn a new word is to look up the definition in English, not the translation. This way I not only learn to describe the word in English well, but I also learn quite a few new words too, but most importantly I learn English structures, and this helps me to think in English.

Hi, I'm agree with you, in my case I only have twice a week English lesson for 1 hour and even if it's better than nothing, for me it's not enough so I watch some English Channel like this, use some podcast in public transport for instance and study some tricky grammar point like how can I use the correct tense according to the context. I feel that I really improve my English level these last months with this kind of help nevertheless I still have to learn a lot (probably in this comment there is a lot of mistakes 😉). Many thanks.

Hi! If you ask me how I learned English I am going to answer that I didn’t have any teachers. I have been watching videos like you do and reading a lot of various stuff like books, articles, newspapers for almost 4 years. So I learnt a lot of vocabulary and one day I started speaking quite confident. Of course, I did shadowing and repeated phrases and sentences but I believe that any person can do it like I did. Learning many useful vocabulary it will give everyone the opportunity to speak with confidence but there will be mistakes for sure. When it comes to how long I did learn English I would say it took much time than if I learnt it with a teacher or some who familiar with the language. But it was my path and I think I did it and keep doing.

Emma! What you said in video belongs to me.😢 My writing is quite well but not speaking. I have enough words or vocabulary but during conversation I always forget them. I also keep concentrating on grammar and get stuck. I often notice that when I speak to the doctors or bank managers, I can get message or ideas across and also understand them without any difficulties. On the other hand, I am not getting on well with the street vendors and students as they use slang or informal words. For that reason now I have started learning phrasal verbs 😐 In my dictionary the synonym of Phrasal verb is 'Headache'. There are hundreds of phrasal verbs. 1 phrasal verbs has 3 or 4 meanings :( When I started with 'get'- get in, get into, get at, get across, get along, get up, get down... ohhh. I thought I need to 'GET RID OFF' all the formal verbs and place all the phrasal verbs with get.

When I was a kid in the early grades, a teacher would give us a printed list of “vocabulary words.” We would take the list home, study it, and then my Mother would quiz me by saying the word and having me respond with the proper spelling. We’d continue until we were comfortable that I knew the proper spelling. I guess this was a form of memorization, but it worked. In later life, I came to know that the study of Latin is also a key to both spelling and understanding the meaning of English words. Alas, I never took Latin, but my Mother’s quizzing set me on the right path and maybe instilled a love of words in me.

@nhanvu65565 жыл бұрын
Hi Emma, I just want to summarize your lesson in my own word. It is one way that I practise English. If time allows, pls help me edit it. - The reason that makes writing & speaking difficult than reading & listening is that writing & speaking are active skills while reading & speaking are passive skills. When reading or listening, our brain is more relaxed as we just "receive" language (I am not usure if the verb "receive" here is correct. Pls suggest me a better verb). However, when writing or speaking, our brain has to work harder as we are producing language. To produce language, we have to go through a complex process of brainstorming for ideas, picking up vocabulary & phrase, arranging sentences structure, checking grammar, spelling and pronunciation. With reading and listening, the work is easier as we need not brainstorm for ideas and vocabulary. We just passively "absorb" the language that other made. To simply illustrate , I think, reading & listening are more like eating & drinking, while speaking & writing are more like cooking. When we eat, food is ready, all we do is to take it. But we we cook, we have to work harder and more actively. - Compared with writing, speaking is even more difficult beacause we have to produce language immediately. We have to brainstorm for ideas, choosing vocabulary, arranging sentence just in a few senconds. The pressure of producing language immediately make us stressed and hold us back from fluently speaking. - Pronunciation and accent are also big challenges that make speaking harder than three other skills. - In my opinion, to speak fluently, we also need to master reading, listening & writing as these skills help us build up vocabulary, grammar, pronunciation and accent. I consider reading, listening and writing are preparation steps for smoothly speaking later.

Could "Enthusiastic" be a way to describe a person who is thrilled about making something? Or somebody who is a fan of doing something, watching something, listening to something (for instance, a kind of music)? A person who is very fond of somebody or something?

Whenever I watch a episode of any English show, I write down the words that I don't know and later look them up on the internet and learn how they are being used in different contexts.

mmmEnglish I have a lot of gaps, but at this moment I’m focusing on pronunciation. If you can provide more videos as one I watched whee you explain the schaw sound, would be perfect. I’m Brazilian , but leaving in Scotland, really hard to understand Scottish accent.

One way that works for me to improve and expand vocabulary base may be to write down phrases, sentences, or even paragraphs that seem to grab my attention one way or another! Then using the very same (passages?) in conversation or writing. Many times it happens that I have something in mind, but not [yet] expressed or stated in writing. Then as I read news articles, books or such, at once come across an expression that can perfectly match what is in mind. That makes a perfect candidate for "writing it down!" then using it subsequently 💗💗💗👌👌😍
