Thank you for this video! Even rebuilt prices on these pumps are scary. I had never heard them called "Vickers" pump before and that led me to learning about the American man who invented power steering and built a wide-ranging industrial empire, Harry F. Vickers. I replaced all of my power steering hoses about six months ago, pressure and return. I got my return hose (bulk) my dealer, and they were perfect -- looked just like the factory hoses from 1989. Cloth wrapped with some kind of wide cloth tape. The only thing that looked off was that the hard tubing on the high pressure line was silver, not gold cad plated. Minor nit pick. Also on the Newco Products website as "metric black cloth wrap look hose."

I'm replacing my 1993 300TE Power Steering Pump. I notice is that the tensioner tension gauge plastic arrow looks like it's missing. I checked online what it looks like and it's not there. The tensioner looks new. How do you thighten it properly now? The last mechanic probably didn't reuse the plastic gauge from the original.

Great video 👍 When installing a new H85 filter a while ago, I noticed sharp, protruding edges on the upper plate of the filter. That would cut filings off of the alloy/aluminum pump housing as the filter was pushed all the way down. All of my reserve power steering filters are now chamfered slightly to prevent that.

I have a 1993 W201 with 70,000 original miles. It has this same Vickers pump (but different part number and lower output pressure). The car's standard steering is too stiff for me. I'm trying to make the steering less effort. I've read that you can drill out this pump's output port by .5 mm to gain more flow to the gearbox and increase the assist. Do you have any thoughts on this modification? Do you think it would work?

Hey mate. Going to do this on my own W124 soon - is there a particulars seal kit and filter you used that you’d recommend?
@MMWA-DAVE7 ай бұрын
not really, just make sure you get the correct seal kit for your particular brand pump. There are differences. Also pay attention to how the internal assembly is orientated, if you install it back to front the pump wont work and you’ll be taking it apart a second time. Easy mistake to make.

What is a safe cleaning solution to wash the parts of the pump after disassembly ?
@MMWA-DAVE2 жыл бұрын
on mine i only cleaned the exterior before and after servicing with degreaser. I don’t want to clean off the oil film on the pump internals, unless its dirty and i have to. If its left for any period of time surface rust will start. Lint free cloth i used to keep it manageable. I cant comment on what cleaner to use internally as I didn’t need to use any.

Ronan Connolly i seem to recall this topic of discussion on one of the w124 groups on Facebook recently and some said it caused increased noise levels. I cant say for sure yet as my engine is still in pieces on the red project, though i did rebuild the pump on my blue/black 124 and its still dry and working fine. The shaft on my red pump probably moves in and out maybe half a mm.

My steering pumps brackets are cracked is it possible to get this welded? Or do i need a new one
@MMWA-DAVE4 жыл бұрын
TheDieselMechanic 69 you’d have to make a judgement call on that. To weld it, it should be disassembled so the heat doesn’t damage anything else but the aluminium itself is absolutely weldable. If you have access to a second hand one i’d just get that and reseal it, fit it and call it a day.

Am going through this at the moment BUT... compared to the leaks on my low pressure return hoses, those on the pump are a Sunday School Picnic! While generic hose can be pressed into use for the obvious ones, the one at the box, 124 997 63 82, presents a real problem in Aus. with supply. As it's RHD, the U.S. is out. Will be millions from Benz. Have you managed to find any for a reasonable price here? Seems to me that aftermarket would be acceptable on this, given accessibility.
