This made my day; heck, this made my whole month (and it's only the 8th today)! It's like the start of a joke, isn't it - an American jazz trombone player and an Austrian brass ensemble walk into a bar......and you know the rest. Fantastic playing! Thomas Gansch and Wycliffe Gordon trading scat solos - genius!!

They're all such fantastic musicians, that during the scat singing, they could have just as easily been playing all of it on their instruments, note for note.

@pdj93 i beg to differ. I was right next next to Roman while he was filming, we appreciated it, don't worry. I think you're confusing 'not understanding the greatness of wycliffe' with shock at the fact we were witnessing something so amazing we couldn't even believe it! This went on for almost half an hour. Greatest musical experience of my life!

To the folks wondering what instrument solos around 3:42, that is a bass trumpet
@UlfBjorlin8 жыл бұрын
+LowReedExpert1 If I am not mistaken, it's actually a marching baritone or a trombonium (yes, that's a thing) turned on its side, or even simply a flugelbone. :) In any case, these three aforementioned instruments are ESSENTIALLY the same thing and sound basically the same as a bass trumpet (though bass trumpet is likely cylindrical only and the others are conical...though tromboniums may also be cylindrical). Hope my ramblings are helpful! :)
@LowReedExpert18 жыл бұрын
+Ulf Bjorlin With all do respect and no ill will, I commented because I know its a custom Schargerl Bass trumpet. Tromboniums are traditionally and almost exclusively wrapped like a brass band horn and they, along with valve trombones are designed to sound like trombones with just a change in feel instead or color or timbre. Flugabones are essentially small bore marching baritones while standard marching baritones are around a medium blow. Once you get a real hold on timbre and color of sound then you could never mistake the sound to a trombone or B. trumpet. B. trumpets do indeed have a lot of cylindrical tubing losing only to the trombone. V. trombone, and trombonium (and sudrophone, but those are basically dead....) When played by a player who plays it correctly and with respect, like the musician here, the sound quite frankly sounds nothing like a trombone or other low brass aside from the same note being played. Again, I don't mean this to come of harshly, I can tell you just like learning as I do. Lord knows its hard to find good recordings or these rarer instruments, but when you hear them enough, and with an old enough ear; It's like hearing a sax next to a clarinet and listening to someone say they're identical Cheers
@UlfBjorlin8 жыл бұрын
+LowReedExpert1 Thanks for the info and reply. I stand corrected; the schagerl bass trumpet is unlike in appearance any bass trumpet I've seen before, that's why my instinct was that it was a matching baritone. My first instrument was baritone horn and thought the timbre was reminiscent. :)
@LowReedExpert18 жыл бұрын
+Ulf Bjorlin Yeah, admittedly it is a difficult sell at first to distinguish timbre with brass instruments (the amount of time I've spent explaining slide trumpets vs soprano trombones) But after you get it down. it opens a whole new range of ensembles (a trumpet choir with Bb piccolo down to BBb contrabass trumpet for instance) I think Schargerl made them like that because typically, small bore doesn't play nice with low brass. I have a Lidl Brno piston bass trumpet that has a much tighter wrap and its even stuffier than a valve trombone. Schargerl's looks like the blow is effortless in comparison
@UlfBjorlin8 жыл бұрын
+LowReedExpert1 Would love to play with ya one day, brother. Would be fun! (I personally don't think I could tell the difference between a slide trumpet and soprano bone however). - Ulf
