Custom Gunmaking - A Filmmakers Perspective

About a year ago we had a filmmaker visit the shop for part of a KZbin series on local craftsmen he was working on. This is the result.
In it we highlight barrel threading, stock inletting, checkering, and stock duplicating and discuss different aspects of the business.

I've watched several of your videos and you are a true craftsman. I am curious as to why you don't slightly over inlet then bed with an epoxy or resin? I'm a carpenter and wood constantly moves, expanding and shrinking if not stabilized, movement might cause shifts in poi. I'm certain you know, just seems counterintuitive making it such a tight wood to metal fit, also free floating is believed to be an improvement for accuracy as well? Your work is beautiful and if I were extremely wealthy I would have you build me one as I know quality and craftsmanship are worth the price.

Yes, I would agree with you that the optimum accuracy would be achieved with a completely free floated barrel. Theoretically marginally less accuracy is achieved with a stress free, full contact bedding. It's really theoretical as the guns will end up shooting better than most shooters can tell. 1/2 MOA is common. Once the inletting is complete I skim bed with clear acraglass. It ends up so thin that it looks like a coat of varnish, but I believe it does provide a level of stability to the wood and protects it from moisture, cleaning solvents, etc. The important point is stress free when inletting and bedding. There can't be a low spot that causes the metal to flex when the screws are torqued, and the barrel can't have partial contact. This is when accuracy goes to crap.
