Steve, I bought a pair at Axpona and received a significant discount for doing so from the dealer downstairs. I agree they are terrific. They throw a huge, deep, and high stage. There is also great instrument separation. I actually was a vintage ADS speaker enthusiast but these were compelling to me.

The one crux of Steve's reviews appears to be just what sounded best with his stuff. Now ... that ... is telling. The Source Point 8 sounded bigger with my stuff. But if you change and input source you know, everything changes. But what we needs is the best possible electrical match for each speaker and then comparing them side by side with not the same source, but the same CD or record played on ideal source equipment and then ... say well, that system was not as good as this system.

Interesting review Steve! If I wasn't retired and on Social Security I'd buy a pair. However, being relegated to DIY at this stage of my life, I'm more inclined to spend my money on a pair of 10" RADIAN 5210Be coaxials and build my own cabinets using the Nelson Pass designed 6-24 crossover from the diyaudio store. The hardest decision will be which amp to use to power them, a J2 or SIT2!

The real determining factor for all of these is the size of room you will be using them in. Interesting that Steve never really touches on this - for e.g., the Metas in a small room would be the better choice over either of the Point Source speakers. The Point Source 10 would be the better choice over the Source Point 8 in a large room. Also, the KEF R3 Meta would be the logical competitor to the Source Point 8, so why no comparison? Agree though that those stands are hideous.

You mentioned that the Mofi Sourcepoint 8 (2way with 8 inch nominal diameter midwoofer) are $3.0k/pair with stands, which is pricing very similar to KEF R3 Meta (3way with 6.5 inch nominal diameter woofer) priced at $2.2k/pair and matching KEF S3 stands priced at $0.7k/pair (S3 stands seem overpriced to me, for what they are), for $2.9k total. That may be a better comparison than the significantly smaller and less expensive KEF LS50 Meta (2way with 5.25 inch nominal diameter midwoofer) priced at $1.6k/pair plus the matching KEF S2 stands priced at $0.45k/pair, for $2.05k total.

Given these are made in China of not terribly exotic materials, I think there is an “Andrew Jones tax” of about $1k on each pair, a point you bring out in your compare to the lintons. I’m personally suspicious of Mofi who made its rep in another area, proceeded to squander that rep, and then moved into outsourced manufacturing with hired gun “name” designers. The whole idea seems like more a of a business proposition than a passion for audio.

@@SteveGuttenbergAudiophiliac Higher sensitivity in the larger diameter but smoke and mirrors because the inertia point is lower in the smaller diameter. What does it mean? Well the Damping Factor and power of the three amplifiers Steve used for the Mo-Fi 8 probably suit it better than what he'd used for the Mo-Fi 10. The question would be whether the 10 is capable of sounding as good as the 8? That' questionable, it has 40 watts more handling than the 8 and despite higher sensitivity its inertia point is higher. Steve is not really being exhaustive in testing.

@@keplermission No he’s doing subjective listening tests. The way most people buy speakers. Some of us actually only care about how they sound, and not how great the measurements are. And not everyone is going to go through the process of learning the acoustics of their room, and learning loudspeaker design, etc. In fact most are not. So you’re basically asking him to cater to a much smaller audience of measurement inclined people. Which is horrible advice for his career. There’s already people on here that do that sort of thing anyway. Erin’s Audio Corner is where you should check out for that type of content. ✌️

@@amb3cog You know NEC of Japan put the IFCAT system in their amplifiers to cope with higher speaker sensitivity's extra big back e.m.f. and that was with a 91.5db SPL, 8 ohm. You see higher sensitivity speakers need amplifiers designed to cope with back emf and medium sensitivity speakers despite their lower inertia still need more current and usually have a round transformer to supply it. I mean subjective listening tests you know, has to be qualified into classes of speaker and amplifier because what sound bad with your connected stuff may in fact be good with the manufacturer's intended equipment. I just don't "get" purchasing 'well-reviewed' speakers and then needing to purchase a sub-woofer to have quality fidelity? It makes no sense to me. When I assess a speaker, I want its bass response to be sufficient and deeply pleasing. It's doable! Currently I love the full-bodied sound from my Tannoy Revolution XT-8F towers. You can purchase for $2400, don't need to make additional purchases of stands and sub.

Because we’re not all in the same size room. I can’t do big towers for instance. They’ll boom. And because stand mounts and subs have better bass overall. Which means better everything. Except for scale and dynamics. But they’re much better at imaging, and soundstage. And just present the music in a much tighter way. Pick your poison. ✌️

@@amb3cog Thanks for the reply. I guess...pick your poison? My Tannoy's (in combination with my Rogue Audio Sphinx V3 hybrid tube/integrated) amp have great imaging and soundstage. Although, I believe you're correct about the room. I'm blessed to have a nice big rectangular room. I believe that the room is actually the most significant part of a "sound system".

@@zizendorf It’s just an expression. I think you’re looking too far into it. There was no alternative meaning or anything other than pick what works for you. They’re choices. And they’re designed to be appealing to all customers. Which one product has trouble doing. Even Apple had to break down and admit that themselves. So they released different size phones. These companies are trying to make money. So they give the consumers what they want, and many people prefer stand mounted speakers. While many prefer floor mounted. Hence both. Take your pick. ✌️

I would love subs and large bookshelves, but I don't have the space or the budget... Towers are excellent value in this regard, and it really depends on the room. Boomy towers are often helped by cushions against the back wall, distance from wall and placing them on pucks, granite or thick MDF.
@zizendorf
@zizendorf Жыл бұрын
@@peterlarkin762 Agreed! With my room's size and configuration, I love that I've got the space to have my towers a full 3 feet away from the back and side walls. It makes a huge difference. As a result, my Tannoy's don't need a sub-woofer.

Hi, Steve. A question. What is the difference between Tannoy, Kef Uni Q and MoFi? All have a treble in the middle of the bass/mid register. There are probably a few more that have the same construction. Shouldn't they all sound about the same?
@HAL9007
@HAL9007 Жыл бұрын
Good question. I will pose one answer on behalf of a small percentage of the population. I have KEF LS50 and Tannoy Cheviots. I never liked the sound of any 3-way tower speaker I ever heard (except my old Allison Three's) -- I owned 4 and listened to dozens. They sound disjointed, abrasive. My ear doc said I am probably one of the few people who are ultra-sensitive to timing and phase errors inherent in 3-way towers. As soon as I listened to point source (or dual concentric), my problem was immediately solved. It made a HUGE difference to my ears. Point source speakers eliminate certain frequency interference problems near the crossover point, because regular speakers have different drivers playing the same frequencies but are different distances from your ears.. There are more and more concentric speakers being developed. Zu in Utah. Spatial Audio. Cabasse, etc, etc. For floor standers, Tannoy are the best followed by Zu. KEF is good for stand speakers.

Differences in crossover and cabinet design will produce different sound. And the drivers may be similar in type doesn't mean they sound the same. After all, not all 6 inch cone woofers sound alike!

Designer Andrew Jones explains that he went for 8" or 10" to be able to reduce excursion (which was important because the woofer is behaving as a waveguide for the tweeter in the middle).

@@syr1964 In my setup the LS50W's sound brutally honest, they reveal every detail and imperfection, so you need good sources. They also image like banshees. The Cheviots are my faves -- dynamic, warmish, lush, detailed -- like playing a good analog system. I have really good sources and electronics for it -- Sonore and PS Audio.This setup sounds as good as any TT system I've heard. I play both speakers with subwoofer -- KC62 for the LS50W's and REL T/7i for the Cheviots -- they make a big diff.

Almost nothing sounds good near a wall. Have a male friend talk with his back up against the wall, and then have them move two feet away from the wall and continue talking, then 3 feet away from the wall. The wall is a gigantic reflector that's interfering with the direct sound of the male voice. Same problem with audio speakers.

Steve, I love most of your reviews but not so much this speaker review. The comparison speakers didn't seem all that equal (eq. woofer and box size) and you mostly focused on bottom end not considering highs and midrange and most of all how easy they are to listen to for a long session (admission: I have the Buchardts MKII which I love). Rest assured, you have not lost me as a fan, I just didn't get too much from this review.

Its to risky to first connet The speaker cable with bananas to The RECIEVER but but not banana conectors in the other end och The speakercable because of The risk that those ananas may Touch each other and BURN The recievers. That deadly risk is NOT ACC3PTABLE. So The so called bandana plugs neeeds to be redesigned so there is a kind of tube ober The metall sticks that makes is IMPOSSIBLE to Touch each other and that The sludes back and expose The metall tips when you slide them into The The conectors. Part 1 is The probability that an accidents happends and part 2 is The concequence of The defined accident. So Risk = probability that The accident happends * (* stands for combined). So a Risk can become to High to accept in three ways 1. The probability for The accident shall happends are verry High and The consequences is not low. 2. The probability is not low and The consequences is High. 3. Both the probability for The accident are High and The consequence is High. So even if mostly there are a way for The user to operate to make The operation safe has NEVER stoped The engineer to build in safety function in electronics if any such function is possible to create.
