There is an old Irish story (might be true, but we'll all have to wait and see) that goes like this: The inventor of the uileann pipes died and was at the Pearly Gates for his interview and was asked what he was carrying under his arm. This is a musical instrument I invented to touch every emotion known and unknown to mankind, he said. A few angels gathered around and said that they had harps and that the sound touched every emotion known to angels. No other instrument can do that, they said, but were curious and asked him to play, so he did. The angels started tapping their feet to the jigs and reels, and wondering at the laments. God popped his head through a cloud and said that the harps should be played only on Holy Days thenceforth. To this day, only the sound of the uileann pipes is to be heard in the heavens 340 days of the year.

Love it! I've never heard this one before. I really love old stories like that about pipes and pipers. I'm gonna tell it to everyone who next asks me about mine, when I'm (nearly) good enough on my Uilleanns!

This is the first tune I ever learned on the tin whistle from a recording of the late great Paddy Maloney and The Chieftains! Music of the Gods!

Amazing job!! This is most beautiful Irish song I've ever heard. I can only imagine my family when they journeyed across the ocean from Ireland to America, I'm sure the uilleann pipes were in their minds. This is extraordinary music and when I think of Irish having to leave their land and travel across by ship to America, the Uilleann pipes represent that journey that millions of Irish made. This instrument to me is the perfect vision of Ireland and the beautiful people.

A lovely air, beautifully played. The scenery's great too. Where was this video shot? I'd love to hear a field recording with just the uilleann pipes being played outdoors, with the sound of the breeze and the birds as background, no studio acoustics, no reverb and no synth.

I guess it's shot in the karst barren Burren of County Clare overlooking the Atlantic ocean.

How long would someone have to have been playing the uilleann pipes to be able to play this? Is this like 5 years of experience? Ten?

Not sure about the Irish pipes but I can say for the highland pipes. I’ve been playing for a little over 3 years and am just now playing in a grade 4 pipe band. For his level I would imagine 5-10 years.
