Originally inhabited by ancestral Puebloans, The NEON terrestrial site at Moab is located just south of the town of Moab in San Juan County, Utah, on the Colorado Plateau, in NEON’s Domain 13. This high desert research site sits on roughly 50 square kilometers and is managed by the Bureau of Land Management. Vegetation is characterized by a mix of grasses and forbs throughout much of the site, with Pinyon Pine and Western Juniper within the Northeastern portion.. A 26 foot tall flux tower extends up, past the vegetation canopy to capture physical and chemical properties of atmosphere-related processes, such as humidity, wind, and net ecosystem gas exchange. Precipitation data is collected with a tipping bucket at the top of the tower. Soil measurements, remote sensing surveys and observational sampling also occur at MOAB.
