The 16 million per figure is derived by adding R&D cost onto the first/only 20 ever made. IF more were ordered, they are 170k to manufacture.

@AdrianWaterson Not too unreasonable to assume the pallet would fly more than a mile. I mean, the plane is probably travelling at least 200MPH and the pallet is probably dropped from at least 10,000 feet... and Newton's laws says that the pallet would continue to travel forward once it exits the plane (either that or it will be blown backward by the backdraft from the aircraft's engines). Either way, it's not unreasonable to assume the pallet would fall somewhere outside of the blast radius.

What’s even more terrifying isn’t even its size, it’s the fact it’s thermobaric. It essentially releases a fine explosive aerosol into the air which ignites and explodes, but because it’s a particulate spread almost like a cloud it has an immense surface area, all the oxygen from the local area gets sucked in to feed the explosion. Even if your lucky enough to survive the blast, it can rupture your lungs as it pulls the oxygen out, cause blood to pool in your eyes (hyphema), rupture organs, and there’s even reports of animals being found with their lungs inside out having been pulled out through their mouths. Truly terrifying.

The worst place to be if one experiences the business end of any thermobaric isn't where it detonates but actually being just beyond the blast area especially in confined spaces. Thermobaric reactions will act like a vacuum and the energy is probably the closest thing a person could come to having their body turned inside out while still being conscious, and be able to travel back in time a millisecond to experience it a second time.

for those who don't know its a fuel air bomb. just before it impacts the 6 foot it sorta pops spreading out liquid explosive which is then detonated and yes it is THAT explosive and as mentioned so large that the 'bomber' is the hercules the only aircrat capable of carrying due to its weight.

In Vietnam we has the “Big Blu 82”, an instant LZ maker. It cleared, or flattened a 100 m radius circle. Dropped them from C 130s. Awesome to watch. Before that, for the big boom effect, someone put one ton sea mines on telephone poles and dropped them. The ground shake of Big Blu was so fierce, at first the soviets thought we were using tac nukes. So, MOAB is the latest in a long line of improvisations. Gotta love the the boys and their toys that make a lot of noise. 🇺🇸

I think you're conflating the MOAB GBU-43 with Boeing's proposal MOP GBU-57. The MOAB was designed and built by Albert Weimorts from AFRL, first tested in 2003. Boeings proposal was the massive ordnance penetrator GBU-57. The MOAB was designed in-house at AFRL after the BLU-82 concept. It was never intended to be dropped out of anything but a C-130. The Boeing GBU-57 was meant to be integrated into the B-2 weapons capability. The GBU-57 program was several order of magnitudes more expensive than the MOAB so was never adopted. The MOAB was adopted and first used in 2017 in Afghanistan. Being designed and built at a US Army munitions facility in Oklahoma saved the USAF significant money and program costs. Since the MOAB doesn't require any significant integration (if any) into the C-130. It's dropped like a piece of cargo.

Fun fact, some years before these came into existence, one of their slightly smaller precursors went off in an armory. Turns out the explosive was slightly unstable and over time decayed to a point it self ignited. Heard it from a guy that worked the security gate while they disarmed 6 of them on Clark Airbase...he was well within the blast radius if one went off by accident while they were attempting to disarm it. Incidentally, he ended up with half a case of thermite grenades that someone had failed to secure properly after the disarming was complete. Probably just a coincidence that some slums and jungle caught fire in the following weeks.
