I feel like one of the reasons this movie is not delivering is because a lot of the messages in the movie are rehashed from the first film. And so many other animated movies. Like stepping out of your comfort zone and stuff. It feels very one noted and predictable. This isn’t a Disney flop but it’s definitely very vanilla and plain. And in an evolving animated landscape where movies like Inside Out 2 (which is Disney) or the Spider-verse movies are bigger and more sophisticated with their themes and styles of animation, movies like Moana 2 just don’t have the same sparkle they once had and seem more like fillers. Sure it might make a lot of money and sell a ton of merch but that’s as far as it’ll go. Cars did the same thing and not a lot of people even remember the movies fondly or at all lol.

Points taken: 1. I wasn’t a huge fan of the first one either. I liked it, but only watched it once as well. 2. I didn’t care too much for the music in the first one either. 3. I also love Greek mythology. 4. I loved Sinbad as well. I guess I’ll give it a shot!!

Her idiot crew and overly cutesy little sister made this skew way too young and killed my overall enjoyment. In the last act where you got to focus more on Moana and Maui it was actually good, but the damage had been done at that point as I’d mostly checked out. This movie should have been more mature and more serious than the original given the stakes, not less. 6/10.

I know. I'm seeing it three times in the theater. It's so incredible and makes me cry every time. I think everyone is going to see that more than Moana 2. The music is being trashed and so is the story. They said it's not strong for children or adults. You'd be bored watching it and we need more films like Wicked. Incredible film honestly.

I've listened to the soundtrack and its honestly not bad for a sequel and for the fact that Lin-Manuel Miranda didn't return for this film! Beyond and Get Lost are my favs but I did not like The Rock's new song 'Can I Get A Chee Hoo'! I think its awful!😅

It was the first DVD movie my sisters and I ever watched, and we immediately watched it again. Unfortunately, it nearly sank Dreamworks animation and caused huge layoffs. Also brought about the end of 2D animation for them as well. But yes, it is an excellent movie with great visuals and characters. Eris is phenomenal.

I remember going with a bunch of other theater people when the first one came out and loving it, and (other than kids) that was the general crowd who wanted to go see it. I think that crowd is gonna be preoccupied with Wicked, though.

There were a couple animated movies that came out, but weren't shown at my favorite theater in the evening or weekends, so how would a working parent go? This movie needed a proper villain, Matangi would’ve been perfect. Her design and song really intrigued me, I’m sad she’s barely in it and isn’t even a villain. Beautiful animation though

I just left the theatre and I really liked it. The first one was my favorite movie. I would give this one a 7/10. The two things that were missing for me were 1. Good music (the songs here sucked) and 2. A strong emotional story beat

I've heard that so much in the last two years. Hollywood needs to do something else to make sure people who have expressed interest in a movie know it's being released. Maybe they should sign up to get a notification that it's coming out next week? My friend saw the trailer for _Red One_ in August, and I told him it was out now. He said, "What's _Red One?_"

The first two acts were underwhelming. It felt like it was a straight to digital film, which means if it was a tv series, it would have probably sucked. Didn't like her crew at first. I felt like they were pointless overall, but I did like them by the end. The 3rd act really saved the film. It was great. I wish the Gods stayed mystical like the volcano Goddess in the first film. Overall it was okay. I think the 70 score on rotten tomatoes is more accurate. I would give it a B-

It’ll be interesting to see if Disney looks at the success of Moana 2 at the box office after turning it from a Disney+ series made from Walt Disney Animation Studios into a movie and if they do the same for Tiana’s series and turn it into a fully 2D/hand-drawn theatrical animated Princess and the Frog sequel film for a theatrical release in Thanksgiving 2029, just so they have time to get the hand-drawn animators of Disney back to do it and get the tech needed to make it possible. I’ll be curious to know what you think of this idea on Movie Math.

Saw it tonight in Dolby. I love the first Moana. It had a beautiful story told with respect, humor and intelligence - plus unbelievable music. This however, I just couldn’t connect. It felt like they rushed through the characters, the plot and the action. It felt disconnected and I didn’t connect to the one note crew mates. There was some great visuals, gags and moments (esp the sister), but I couldn’t connect to it. I was really disappointed. Glad you loved it, but I’ll be sticking to the first Moana.

It DEFINITELY doesnt deserve that RT Score. I feel people are just going to hate on it because they found out it was supposed to be on Disney+. BUT THE QUALITY ISN'T THAT! I’ve been waiting for Grace’s review all day. For me, this movie suffered from mediocre storytelling (it was clearly a streaming series) and the songs were severely lacking. It didn’t have Lin’s touch.

Some people said the animation is great but the story is pretty bland so this is interesting! My loved ones and I like the first movie. The youngsters everywhere must have watched it dozens of times on Disney+. We need to keep reminding them that the deep sea is dangerous though so they should not underestimate it. It's nice to know that you have the same opinion in the 'Genuine Risk' part of your review here! Glad to know this movie can continue to represent people from Polynesian islands. We always like representation when it's done right. Coco, Mulan, and Raya animation movies are high on our favourite list, for instance. Look forward to see this! Thanks Grace!

I couldn't disagree more with you it was a horrible attempt at a sequel nothing new happened and the additional new characters are absolutely useless and not memorable with the exception of the kakmora warrior. Visually it was stunning but everything else you mentioned was definitely not as good as you stated.

How can you not love the first Moana, Grace? I feel it's the most "classic Disney" animated movie of the 2010s next to Tangled. The animation is gorgeous, it explores aspects of Moana's culture, it's a fun adventure movie with a strong female hero and a demigod sidekick, has a great soundtrack, and a powerful emotional core that isn't trying too hard. Totally respect your opinion, but am really surprised you didn't care for it!
