My mother and I just watched "Wicked - Part 1" today at the cinema and we both loved it! It's definitely an interesting and entertaining interpretation of the world of Oz. Plus, my mom and I are Nigerian-Canadians. So watching Cynthia Erivo, a British Nigerian woman, bring Elphaba to life on the big screen was a great source of pride for us.

As soon as I saw the thumb nail of Jeff Goldblum my first thought was; and that right there is one of the reasons why it's a totally different story. Casting an actor in a musical who can barely sing and can't dance. As Jeff himself said: 'He was able to fool people into thinking that he could do something magical'. Yes Jeff, you did.

I thought he was an interesting bit of casting. Yes he's not really a singer although he's more musical than people give him credit for but he's also very good at playing quirky and eccentric characters so in some ways he's a perfect fit for the role. He's also usually cast as a good guy but he's much more ambiguous in this film.
@frederalbacon
@frederalbacon Ай бұрын
@@trevorbrown6654 I love that ambiguity too. Like, he's just a foreigner in a weird land, doing what he can to survive, he didn't ask to be their deity/king, they picked him, and as a charlatan, he is just going with what makes people happy. His role with Elphie is a little more concrete, he's the antagonist of the story. But it's made clear that he's not the antagonist of Oz.

I'm noticing how Glenda is getting a pass, she is very wicked. She said she don't anybody she hates enough to give that hat to, then she gave it to Elphaba, then at the end her aim was to trick Elphaba into going back to the Wizard to be punished......now that I think about it, everybody associated with Elphaba is wicked from her father to the wizard. Elphaba is about the only person in the movie who is not wicked.

"Are people born wicked?" For as long as I can remember, I've lived under the philosophy/idea that evilness/wickedness is something most of us aren't born with. Instead, it's more of a choice people make later in life due to some form of unfortunate circumstances. Said circumstances could be trauma, poverty, low self-esteem or just feeling weaker than those around you. On the OTHER hand, there are specific cases of people who couldn't have POSSIBLY had such things happen in life that would lead them down their evil paths. Such examples include Adolf Hitler, Osama Bin Laden, Saddam Hussan, Vladimir Putin, Jack the Ripper, Joseph Stalin and more presently, Donald Trump and Elon Musk

@ It’s called fan-fiction bc it’s not canon to the original source material and it’ll never be. It’s a retelling, a revision. The original novels were written by L. (SPOILERS FOR WICKED PART 2) In the theatrical version, after the interval it shows that Fiyero was transformed into the scarecrow by Elphaba. One thing I questioned is that if this is the case, why did Elphaba threaten to burn her boyfriend with fire in the Wizard of Oz movie? I know Wicked usually ties up loose ends within the Oz storyline, but this one doesn't add up unless she was just playing with him.

It tries to tie it together but, i think they should have considered Wicked is own universe. They tried giving something to the fans of the wizard of Oz. But in 1995 book, musical and movie, Boq was younger than his first counterpart. Cause Boq is older in the very first OZ book, with his wife and children. This is not true to L. @@J.P.RoblesHe’s from Nebraska in the books. They made the Wizard from Kansas in the movie probably to tie him to Dorothy’s life.

Why is the origin stories for these characters considered true to the story when they each have different origins from the source material?

Okay the way i see wicked is that its what the film Maleficent was to sleeping beauty. Wicked is a re imagination thevwizard of Oz. Its no way a prequel

The Wizard of Oz is really not about the wizard until Disney tried the origin story.
@moondivine2288
@moondivine2288 Ай бұрын
TBF it isn’t about the wicked witch neither, she actually has a small role in the actual book. The wizard of Oz is about Dorothy. There is something poetic about a girl who sees herself as powerless doing more than a grown man that pretends to have power. Both not being from OZ. I think the Disney version is ok but, if we ever get a Wizard prequel I wish some of it was inspired by wicked. See him grow into power and meeting Elphaba’s mom.

I said the same thing. The cowardly lion, tin man, and scarecrow were the cursed versions of their origin. Elphaba did that to them as she learned how to cast spells. They are all seen in the movie. They all went to school together.

This was as disgusting as it gets when it comes to butchering a true classic . The wizard was and always will be timeless . It didn't need this garbage . I've seen kids today's watch the original. It still has its magic . Then we get this woke forcing LGBTQ whatever down everyone's throat. I hope it gets forgotten and remembered as a time when Hollywood lost its way and evil won in Hollywood for a while . The 1960s and 70s kid in me that the true and magical movies that were originally made won't be pissed on any longer. I was excited to see this but I only lasted less than 5 minutes . Yukkkk 😢

I get it… but.. I feel like this should get a pass on including LGBTQ actors since it is a musical. Lots of gays in the theater world. If it was an action movie it’d be a different story tho -a gay man
