I think that, if Moana DOES die, Disney is not going to let her STAY dead. They'll use the magic in the movie to revive her in some way, and she'll be able to return to her life, except as wayfinder for ALL things. They won't kill her off completely. (I think.)

She didn't die. She ascended. There is a difference. I think the previous theory that she is a demigod is correct, and during that storm she ascended from her human form to her demigod form. BUT this isn't even her final form. In the new movie, she will ascend to full godhood.

Okay, let's take it a step further (if you are correct). Moana travels with a chicken (or rooster, more specifically), as her companion. Despite how dumb Hei Hei seems to be, he doesn't die either. The answer may be that he swallows the Heart of Te Fiti (before spitting it back out). Thus, he may be, in a sense, able to escape certain death as well. Also, the crowing of a rooster can symbolize resurrection and the ability to overcome death. Couple that with the old joke of why did the chicken cross the road - to get to the other side. The other side could symbolize the other side of life. So, Moana is traveling with a somewhat beater of death that can help her make it to one side of life or the other. Hmmm. 🤔

Yes. Moana died. As someone who grew up and lives on a tropical island, from toddler age we are warned not to touch the coral. Ever. Getting grated by the coral like a cheddar cheese block the way she did guarantees she's dead.

In MatPat's theory he dove more into the character backgrounds of various characters, in relation to the Polynesian mythology. His conclusion is that Moana is a demi-goddess and makes a compelling case for Maui unknowingly being her birth father. That said, I think your "the heart is an anchor" thought and your take on her journey because of this is a great thought. It plugs a major hole, even in MatPat's premise. I think it would be worth a watch for your team as it might add some context to your own theory. The two theories merge quite well and you may learn something new in the process.

I do think Moana died in the first movie. I think she might have come back as a demigod instead of to say human so I think of coming back to life as a full human. If this theory is accurate, then dying doesn't really mean much, since the Stone is the built-in resolution to keep Moana in the story. She could be dead for the next 4 movies and it's irrelevant as long as she has the Stone. Like her grandmother, she can live a normal human life until she gives up the Stone.
