I read once that in Polynesian culture, the parents place there baby in the ocean to see whether they're healthy or not. If they sink, they're not healthy so they through them out. This can be proved by the lyrics in "you're welcome" when maui says "Maui can do anything but float" the Te Fei took Maui because he would've died other wsie and she was the goddess of life. His tattoo also shows him getting thrown into the ocean. Great theory though.

....what if Maui was accidentally tossed from one of the ships? like, he fell off as a toddler because he was learning and didn't know to not go near the water. that would be why, during the song from the ancients, the children aren't seen around toddler age. THEORY: At the end of every video he says "Until then, I'm the Theorizer" suggesting that during videos he is no longer the Theorizer, and must make it to the end of the video to once again become the Theorizer. This could explain the rise in shorter videos we have begun to see. The question then becomes, why is he no longer the Theorizer during videos? This is purely speculation but it might be because The Theorizer is an alien species with a mind far superior to ours, thus when he stoops down to our intelligence to explain a theory level he no longer is at the same intelligence level and is no longer The Theorizer. But when he returns to his full potential, he recharges and once again becomes The Theorizer. I'd guess it takes about a week for him to recover enough to do it again. could we please talk about the possible link between Maui and maybe Dakuwaqa, the shark god, as you saw the necklace of Maui contain some fairly large tooth and some seem to be from a pretty large shark, much larger than a great white, and Maui have a link to many legendary creatures and GOD'S , for those who don't know Dakuwaqa : In Fijian mythology, Dakuwaqa (Dakuwanga) is a shark-god. He was greatly respected by fishermen because he protected them from any danger at sea and sometimes protected them from evil denizens of the sea. it is also hinted in the movie when Maui had prob shape shifting and ended up as a half shark half human.

I have LOADS to add to this theory. It suggests that moana and frozen share a universe. Remember what you said about the voyagers welding the ocean with the necklace. I believe it is a way to communicate with the water spirit. And not just any water spirit, BUT THE SAME ONE THAT APPEARS IN FROZEN 2. I think the the voyagers could communicate with the four spirits and once moana and her family became voyagers again the knowledge was passed down the generations until it reached the king and queen in frozen and by extension Elsa. The water spirit that takes the form of a horse in frozen 2 is also the ocean in moana. Elsa and Anna are desendents of moana and the four spirits are gods that serve ti fiti.

True. Remember when Moana started she got hurt and almost died? The Ocean taught her the lesson: You could die. And the Ocean did not save or help her during this lesson. Maby this was the same with her Dad and his friend. And that is why the ocean couldn't help his friend. The friend died - also teaching him the lesson: You could die. But I think the bigger reason for Moana was that she knows (from Tala, and from the rotten coconuts) that her island will die if she doesn't try to get the heart of te fiti back.

So she is very kind to even the smallest creatures. And when she faces Te Ka, she isn't attacked. She can see threw that. She knows she isn'T evil. It's like she knows there is something that botheres Te Ka and so she says "this is not who you are" And since she sees threw that, she is able to give the heart back. Umm... I know this might be irrelevant but in maori legend, the land and the sky are married they had multiple children, water, fire, food/life and war. Maui's parents had thrown Maui into a river because she had too many children (well technically because she cheated on her husband to make Maui). But this story is probably irrelevant because in maori legend Maui was a born Demi good.

There is the possibility that Maui was the second child instead. There's no mention of any of the chiefs having siblings so it could be assumed that the chiefs only had one child (possibly to dissuade any conflict over who would be in charge). If Maui was the unintentional second son, that would give them even more reason to need to be rid of him. But they'd still care for him, possibly more than an illigitamate child

My counter theory is that Maui was illegitimate, and after returning to his people to claim his birthright as the first born, his sibling who was raised to rule challenged him to a number of supposedly impossible tasks “Hercules style” before he/she would concede. What I think could have happened was the Gods were so desperate to get and raise a child, the ocean betrayed the possessor of the stone to steal the perfect baby. The Gods told him that his parents threw him and he believed it. So the chief threw the stone into the ocean where Mr. SHINY found it and this is how he can control the water for fish when he wants it. The travelers settled so that they wouldn't have to fear another child being taken. Moana was chosen to settle the differences between the people and the Gods because Maui served his 'punishment' for 'stealing' the stone, but they just wanted him to live like a human and not a God. The Gods planned for Maui to steal the stone and the Gods start killing the resources. Honestly, why would fish in the water die when the stone that controls the LAND is stolen? This would mean the Gods were working together to get Moana to finally conquer her fears and go find Maui (her family) and make it right between her family and the God of the water. The Gods planned EVERYTHING that happened in the movie!!!!!!

Is it maybe possible that Maui's story is similar to Jason and the Argonauts? After all, Jason was escorted away right after his birth by Chiron, teacher of demigods, so that his uncle wouldn't kill him. As for his parents, I think they were disposed of. Which could possibly mean in this case that Maui fits the role of Jason, and maybe the Polynesians fit the role of the Argonauts? Or maybe it's that Maui has a bigger purpose, which is to gather together a band of friends and avenge his parents?

You kept showing similarities between the necklace and the setup of the ocean vs. Te Fiti, so... would that make the necklace the "Heart" of the ocean? That would explain why it has such a perfect fit for Te Fiti, especially if the Ocean BROUGHT Maui to Te Fiti. Maybe it's with the chiefs because it also had a desire for watching humans grow up and become humans. I mean, if Te Fiti has a heart, so must other gods, and that would explain why the gods found Maui so quickly... not only did his parents expressly send him to Te Fiti, but they sent him through another god.

What if Moana's people were granted that shell as a gift to control the water from the Gods but it is just half of the full power without the heart of Tefiti. Some of the people started becoming corrupt and wanting the full power of both water and land. The Gods saw this happening and needed a potector of the heart and Maui's parents sacrificed him for Tefiti to make him that protector. Unfortunatly in his desperation to please people he was the one who ended up stealing the heart and so a new protector was needed. Moana's grandmother protects the necklace and teaches her granddaughter the same respect and love for the ocean making her her trustworthy to the Gods and the ocean. For her grandmothers loyalty and love for the ocean the Gods reincarnate as a ray.

theory: Mawi`s dad was the chef wanted him to prove his strength and so they sent him to find and take the the heart but he fail and when he returned his dad empty handed his dad is angry at him and calls him worthless and throws him into the sea until he`s taken by the sea and take to Tefiti (or however you spell her name) and she turned mawi into a demi god and gave him his fish hook and sent him on his way. but when he returned to his dad his dad didn't even recognise him and so in a fit of rage Mawi stole the heart of Tefiti to prove his dad wrong... and the movie begins

ok 1. the movie was not based off Polynesians ,it was based off of the new Zealand Maori's and their myths, and the patterns you see on their cloths are actual tribe patterns in Aotearoa. 2. what if Maui is actually the grandma's sister and their parents sent Maui away into the sea to make him get the heart, as if he was the "one". but they forgot to give him the necklace and so they give it to Tala instead, deeming her the chosen one not Maui... and 3. all his tattoo's of him "doing things to get his family to appreciate him" are from the Maori legends and myths not actually him doing it to help for his family. also in our myths he has 6 more brothers that do all other those things he is doing in his tattoos but with him!! ???hear me out!!

What if his parents were the first chiefs and voyages. What if they were land locked and asked the ocean to leave and the ocean knew that tefiti wanted a child so it made the deal with them there son for the ability to leave the island. We dont know how old Maui is but we do know he spent 1000 years on a rock island with out aging so it wouldn't be that far fetched to believe that maybe he is ancient. We see all through history people making sacrifices to please the Gods so maybe he was one as well.

Maui is Moana's sibling, then how did he remain on the island for a 1000 years? It would make more since if you said he was the original chief's son and wanted to please him. Since the boats had been hidden for YEARS. It's a fun theory, but your math doesn't add up with the timeline of events in the movie so rethink the Maui/Moana sibling thing.

What if there was a legend/ or story's about a child conceived on land and born on sea. And that there was a sign from the ocean that Maui was the destined child that they didn't throw him into the ocean but they gave him to the ocean to give to the God's so he can do what he was destined to do.
