I believe automated mob farm with complete dark room is the only way for a 'traditional' feel now. Also, if you go explore the rings (the outer layers of the map around your central base) there is LOTS to farm and collect with mob spawners and stuff. Highly suggest exploring out a bit. Using the map helps find the content, as hovering your mouse over the map shows what layer the block you hover over is at. That way you know if you need to go up or down to get into a dungeon.

I remember you having the invisible light lantern. If you place that in the center of your base, it will create invisible lights in a very large area around it. You had a question about it when you got it as a random reward on episode 1 I think. Just thought of it now. The lantern itself was not invisible so you thought it was broken, but that is intended so that you can pick it up if you want :)

Jack, just dropping in to say I really hope you get into the Create Mod later on. There is a TON of stuff in that mod and there are ways to create drilling machines that can dig out massive areas, yes there are trains, and ways to automate everything in a giant factory that would make Willy Wonka proud.

Lava Egg can be auto extracted to pure lava using the 'Item Drain' from the Create mod. Roost>Hopper>Drain. Then you can pipe the lava anywhere it needs to go using Create mods Piping system. Be careful with Create mod pipes.. if you break them while the pump is still pumping you get your liquid all over the floor.

I so sorry for so many comments, but I'm still in process of watching the full video :D Instead of dropping down with hoppers, You can also have a hopper output to a Drawer, then pipe the drawer to the outside box. The Drawers are not partial blocks, so they stop light from getting through. The mega torch may stop slime spawns, but not sure what the range is.

All of the chickens you put in trash is potential feather drop. Place on ground and kill instead of trashing. Kill with a Cleaver for increased feather drop.
