Comparing this to a mob trial is apt. I'm reminded of the courtroom scene in Goodfellas. When taking down a mob boss, the only direct witnesses available will be people with dirty hands. If Macbeth had survived to the end of the play, Lady Macbeth was the one with the most intimate knowledge, but had spots on her hands she couldn't take out.
