I bought this lens 2 years ago but it's been sitting in a box. I didn't find success capturing insects because the lens seemed to only focus by getting so close to the insect that it would scare them away. Touching them, practically. I see you captured bees, which gives me hope that maybe I am doing something wrong and can improve.

You are right that you need to be extremely close. But it is actually possibly. You just need to be patient - some insects aren’t that afraid.

There is very little room to adjust it, so you can see it as fixed.

I have a Huawei mate 20 smartphone, which has great macro right out of the box. No need for an extra macro lens to screw on. it can capture an object as small as 5 cm that will fill the whole screen. (16-9)

Thank you for these tests! May I take the liberty to make a suggestion or two? I'll repeat what I wrote elsewhere. It would be nice if you STANDARDIZED your tests so we could compare all macro lenses. To figure out the (1) Field of View (FOV) and (2) *real magnification* of your macro lenses, photograph a sheet of GRAPH PAPER with 1x1 cm (main squares) and 1x1 mm subdivisions. Most stationary stores carry this kind of paper. Take a photograph as close as possible while maintaining perfect focus and another photograph as far away as possible while maintaining perfect focus. There won't be much difference between the two with macro lenses but some lenses but some lenses have a better focus range than others. This simple test will tell us *the smallest area* that can be captured with the lens (aka Field of View or FOV) and it also tells us the actual magnification regardless of the computer monitor or printing method, say, at 300 dpi on a laser printer or offset press. See here at the 1:25 mark: kzbin.info/www/bejne/hImQkHSrnNdontk At 1:33, on my 21.5 inch 4K monitor, a 1 cm square measures 12 cm when I put a ruler on the monitor. This is 12X magnification and it captures 39x22 mm (the 15X lens captures 24x14mm). On my 22 inch 1680x1050 monitor the same block is 15 cm. Also, I suggest that you photograph a small postage stamp with a well defined halftone image. This way we know exactly how much of the image is sharp enough for most situations.

Sorry, but I am not the kind of reviewer who has the patience to do such measurements. I tend to emphasize real world usage and the kind of images you get. You should get a rough feeling of the magnification if you look at my sample photos. Otherwise I recommend looking at other reviewers who are often more thorough when it comes to technical details.
