yeah me too, just being set in our universe and with reasonable sci-fi not so far off makes it a lot of fun to point out all sorts of things, and later it will get deeper with how crazy a show with toy selling at its core could be a way of making Americans and Japanese just a generation after the war think about how while war machines are cool, and heroism has its place, war itself is terrible and glorious

Was about to say.... Zaku-2s are just mobile suits. Gundams usually have the V antenna on the forehead, have a more humanoid face with eyes, and are usually made of a material that makes them extremely hard to take down or even damage. For UC, thats Luna Titanum. For AC, its Gundanium. So on and so forth. Basically... You KNOW its a Gundam when you see it.

What a dream come true to see MetaNerdz covering Gundam. To any Star Wars fans who might not know about Gundam, I’d recommend trying it out. Don’t be put off by the old anime aesthetics, Gundam, especially Universal Century Gundam, is one of the deepest sci-fi franchises out there. It’s up there with Star Wars if you deep diving in lore.

The Zaku isn't a Gundam it's a Mobile Suit. Gundam is the name of the Federation's Prototype Mobile Suit RX-78-2. And no that large ship didn't smash into the colony it simply exploded.

6:50 I believe their names were an intentional word play on 'slender denim jeans' Also, despite Tem not wanting children to fight in wars, towards the end of the One Year War, Zeon's resources were so exhausted that they were forced to send out fresh graduate teens (such as Bernard Wiseman in gundam 0080) with minimal training into battle only to be wiped out quickly by the now more seasoned federation aces. In other stories such as thunderbolt (which isn't part of the main canon UC timeline), we do also see teens volunteering to become mobile suit pilots, to relatively similar effectiveness.

One of my favorite Star Wars channels covering Gundam? A surprise to be sure, but a welcome one. On that subject, I kinda hope Bandai/Sunrise features in a future Star Wars Visions season. I always wondered how they would adapt Star Wars into a Gundam-like series. The setting itself is already set up for that. Replace Newtypes with Jedi and turn Starfighters into Mobile Suits.

Correction by the end of the episode Amuro’s father is not on the station and was dragged out of it and not found until later in the series . The person seeing Amuro is Bright and Amuro’s father is absent. One more correction the designs of Zeon uniform are more inspired by WW1 and before Prussian Germany and only later in the end of the series and in next ones the ww2 Germany design inspiration will be more prominent.

Yo I love Gundam might I recommend that you listen to the Mobile Suit Breakdown podcast they have been going through all of Gundam and they do some crazy good research (not as much in the early episodes). Their first episodes are a little rough as they are just starting out and they have even translated some previously untranslated obscure shorts.

I love the spec description for space combat in an alternative GUNDAM timeline (CE). There the first mobile suit was to have the mobility of a fighter craft, the armor of a tank and the firepower of a battleship.

God i feel old now because i remember when these first came to America in Anime form, shortly after Gundam Wing broke into the scene in American afternoon cartoons... Personally i love 0080, simply because it was the first to follow a Zeon pilot/team rather than a Federation/Rebellion main character like most others follow. Then again i also have a huge attachment to the Kampfer, as well as the 0083 gundams, sooooo good!

Well, that old Kyle Hill video was a blast from the not too distant past! It should be said though that the pressure differential between the vacuum of space and a space colony's interior is no greater than 1 bar (14.5 lbs/square inch). So that scene from Alien Resurrection where the hybrid alien gets sucked out of a bullet hole... wouldn't happen. You could literally plug that hole with your finger, and the worst that would happen is it getting swollen, and maybe a bit frostbitten.

It's funny to mention the opening theme being war like, because it's about the Federation's Gundam getting justice, and the Federation is much more thematically like the Allies in WWII. Whereas Zeon is both aesthetically and thematically the Axis. So the opening *wasn't* talking to America.

This series is much darker then people say. Buddy showed me "War in the Pocket" a few months ago and there's a scene where a spent shell casing from a mobile suit falls and strikes a mother holding her child as they flee the battle. It kills her instantly and the protagonist (teenagers) have to grab the toddler and run for their lives. The blank stare on the mother's face as she lay crumpled in the street haunts me still.

You mentioned the shell casings being larger than than the cars, I think that is more of a production oversight or maybe just an artistic choice to emphasize scale. The Zaku Machine Gun is chambered in a 120mm cartridge, which is massive for an automatic weapon, but there are plenty of real world tanks and vehicles that use guns of 120mm or bigger. The shells are large but nowhere near the size of a car, one person can easily move 120mm ammunition by hand. There is also a real life connection to the Zaku's weapon, the 120mm machine gun is largely based on the Soviet DP-28 LMG.

2:15 actually those Zakus that participate in Operation Britist are not MS-06F they are the older model MS-06C which have radiation protection due to their using of Nuclear Warhead. The C model get refit into F model after the Antarctic Treaty forbid the uses of Nuclear and Chemical weapons making them lighter

Oh, you are tackling Gundam. Always good to see others dive in and spread the lore. Already start with telling me something I've been trying to find out myself: whats the year in the old calendar. 2124 AD. I knew the EF was founded in 1999 but never when the calendar changed to UC. Did not know about the ' bonk' designation either. The measurements of the colonies are generally, though at time they vary with each Side since they try new things with each one. As the close-types of Side 3 can attest to the most. You are repeating some of the mistakes that came with the initial translation of the series. Like 'both sides lost half their respective population' is a translation mistake and its actually is that half of the human population in the Earth Sphere was killed. You might have to reupload the video to correct the mistake of calling the Zaku II a 'Gundam'. Just saying. Calling mobile suits 'large tanks' is the wrong analogy as they are meant to be more fighter crafts. Heck, General Revil liken mobile suits as such and how in WW2 fighters destroyed the belief that battleships were unsinkable to anything but other battleships. Been curious about the age of enlistment in Zeon for a while. One source told me it was 14 but, officially, they wouldn't enter battle until 17 years of age. That did not happen, I can tell ya. And after losing so many early in the war, the Federation lowered their recruitment age to try to fill in their forces. Most informative parts are the behind the scene real world inspiration. Some lore channels bring them up but not alot.
