Mobile Suit Gundam SEED - An Anime Review

It's so refreshing to watch a video from a western audience who actually like SEED and can see its strength. Usually, western Gundam fans can only bitch & cry when they review SEED, not knowing that SEED's popularity literally saved not only the Gundam franchise but the mecha genre itself in the early 2000s from a period of slump. Don't worry, SEED appreciators like us are not in the minority. The show is actually beloved in Japan & most Asian countries. And Bandai-Sunrise itself fully Embrace SEED. All the SEED hate practically came from the loud & vocal western haters. Drowning out the voice of a good portion of western fans who like SEED just fine. Fun fact: Gundam is mostly a friendly mecha franchise for girls & women audience. The first Gundam (1979) reportedly had a lot of female fans and many of them are actually mature ladies because they were really invested with the story involving Char Aznable. After that positive reception, Gundam franchise continue to make shows that are also appealing to the female fans (except for a handful of titles), not just males.

Japan and America definitely have different taste, however it doesn’t make their complaints less valid. I haven’t seen the series and can’t make an opinion, but the most popular series over here is Wing, which is not a good show, so I don’t trust American taste in anime compared to Japanese reception. So after the UC, I’ll probably try SEED and see if it’s good for myself

Thank you. Thank you so much for justifying this underrated series. You really spot on and spoke about all the points I literally love about this series, even the parts I dislike feel sooooo superficial. I rewatch Gundam Seed and Destiny as many times as I've watched Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion. These are anime with top quality voice acting, music production, story and character driven plots which really add spices and flavors to the anime watching experience. Gundam Seed is truly one of the best Gundam Franchise imho, it literally revives a dying franchise to its peak in a single series. AND YES, the Japanese voice acting is just superb. You heard it once, you CAN NEVER go back to English dub anymore. The seiyuu industry in Japan is not for show. I really love Akira voicing Athrun because he's one of my favorite characters in the series, the amount of conflict in his emotion has all been fully invoked by his voice acting which makes Athrun feels alive in an anime.

This is really good review for such fantastic mecha anime. About the CRISPR gene editing there are at least 3-4 kids born in china back in 2019 that are probably around 3-4 years old by now. So Gundam Seed did kinda predict our times.

I never figured out how a show this good was/is hated on so much. Sure, Kira Bagira cried a lot, but he was killing people and fighting his best friend in a war at 16. He didn't want to fight. He wanted to protect the ones he loved. Flay was devious but she had lost her family. Her skill set wasn't compatible with military combat unlike the others she was around. The others quickly adapted to the military lifestyle. She knew what she wanted and went after it to survive. These people were all victims of war.

Well said, we absolutely agree. Most of the characters are teenagers who were forced into a situation that not only did they not ask for, but which they were definitely not prepared for. Their actions and choices were largely determined by the fact that they were all in survival mode. And because of this, we could understand why and how these characters came to be. Which made things more realistic in our opinion. So we also don’t understand all the hate this show gets either.

I love this series! Was literally thinking on doing a Gundam video just like this. Maybe on 00 though since that's my favorite. I am also a smaller anime KZbinr so I know comments can really go a long way on here so just wanted to stop by and let you know I appreciated the video and subscribed!!

When I went through all of Gundam, I gave seed and sees destiny a shot and to this day I just don't like it. While I would say give it a shot despite that, not every gundam show appeals to everyone. Regarding the critique towards Seed, you can't just wave it away. By all means all gundam series have their good and bad sides and plenty of people have given valid cricism on this show. Regarding the mentioned of it being a male-oriented audience and/or show that is rather misleading. While in regards to the times it was written and in cases how Tomino wrote his characters the franchise never shyed away from giving any kind of character a position of power. While a nice review this has given me the impression you haven't seen much if Gundam except Seed. I'd say Seeds popularity is because it appeals to a broader audience because of the voice actors and artists involved. The gundam franchise helped it be more noticeable but feels more like an accessory to the series and has attracted fans who aren't mecha fans whether they became a fan of the genre is another matter but just as that Seed has attracted new and old fans it is disliked by new and old fans for reasons they enjoy other entries. Another black sheep in the Gundam entries is I'd say Mobile Fighter G Gundam and the rather not as well known After War Gundam X. There's also the newest entry Witch Of Mercury which I'm sure would be interesting to watch as well.

Gundam seed have great mech design n music but it story is just exact rehash of OG n zeta with the worst char development of all gundam series especially destiny. I still like it side story like stargazer n x astray, cuz at least it have original story n failed super mad coordinator kira still got better char dev than super boring coordinator kira

Still is my first anime that I watched and is still in the top of my list. And soundtrack one of the best out there. This show got my writing side and creative side going. Looking forward to the movie and hoping it well worth it. "This is the World I want to protect!" ~Kira Yamato~
