It’s such a strong start which is meant to make you ask questions, of what’s going on, why everyone is behaving so oddly and why Kamille reacts so strongly. I’ll try to explain the disrespect and reputational damage, because I don’t think it translates well today. The martial arts training is to instill brotherhood and unity in a world where dissent is not allowed. To go against this cultural (and militaristic) enforcement is very anti-social and seen as not taking the harsh reality of immediate post war as seriously. Ironically it was stifling for some and caused exactly what they were trying to avoid. In such a world where high masculinity is seen as a standard, having a feminine name is provocative and having your manhood questioned, especially if you’re a stifled and rebellious teenager who doesn’t quite understand his circumstances, is highly damaging to your reputation and ego. On top of that he’s a newtype, so everything he experiences is magnified, plus he has more senses. This is well before internet anonymity (in our time), where your name and reputation meant everything and would follow you well into your adult life and jobs. In our time, you simultaneously are no one and can have your entire history summed up and found online. HR managers and hiring staff will literally look up your social media and judge your politics and interests, then judge you on that despite not knowing you. We’re far more disposable.

Best UC Gundam show in my opinion. Anyone that's new here is in for a ride. Also got to say, I'm immensely satisfied they went with the NA opening and ending themes. I feel like they capture the scale of brutality and the sublime respectively. As opposed to the very catchy Japanese pop of the time which is great, but inappropriate in my opinion.

For sure it is the best Gundam by far IMO. Only the original Gundam that this one is a sequel for as well as the 2007 series Gundam 00 come close to as amazing as this Gundam series is. There's a thing about Z that has bothered me for decades, and I wish to get it off my chest. I guess this is the right place. Everyone, please notice the space background. In the early episodes (first 20 to be exact), the space background is mostly black, which looks realistic and fits the atmosphere. However, once they return to space from Earth, the space background becomes dark blue, which looks really cartoonish.

There's another fun fact about Z I wish to share. Z literally kicked off the bootleg anime business in Hong Kong back in 1985. Before Z, we could only hope for our TV station to air the anime we wanted, but being the sequel to Gundam, it was so big and hyped by local fans that they released bootleg VHS for $200 HKD for the first 2 episodes subbed (back then, that's more than most middle schoolers lunch money for 2 weeks). Not surprisingly, it failed, and no more issues were released because it was too expensive and VCR wasn't even so common. But still, it was the first attempt at bootleg anime.
