Here are the numbers, forgot to make a table for the video: Force Test iPhone 11 - 352 N iPhone 12 - 443N To press down the extra ~100-ish N's on the iPhone 12 took quite a bit of effort. Based on this value, the iPhone's screen is tougher than most screen protectors I've used. Scratch Test -The iPhone 12 had better scratch resistance on the front by a bit. My #7 pick didn't leave the same scratches as the iPhone 11 -Back scratch resistance is the same as the 11 -Camera Len's are the same (both scratched with my #8 pick)

despite toughness for scratches etc, would a screen protector take some of that force away from the screen on impact? So a drop eg onto a pointed surface for max force that may have broken the screen would have some of it absorbed by the protector and keep the screen unbroken? That + scratch protection is my main reason for using one. And on the 12, full cover protectors are pretty nice and almost invisible

so there's no point in having a case anymore other than for grip and to accessorise but other than that the iphone 12 is indestructible in terms of everyday usage from short falls from a desk, seated or standing and from chucking your phone in your bag/pocket which may be next to your door keys. I used my iPhone 4S up until 2018 from after years of abuse the screen cracked but only because I dropped it in the toilet and the curved ceramic was able to damage the screen because all other times my 4S was dropped on a flat surface. I then moved to Huawei P Smart the original model that came out the year prior in 2017 for £100 which was as good or better than the flagship iPhone X at around the same time in terms of specs. The iPhone 12 Pro Max that I've upgraded to now since my 4S got destroyed was the perfect way for an upgrade. I hated the look of the curved iPhones. The 4S design is the ultimate aesthetic design of a smartphone ever. I hope they keep this design for the next few generations as I can see they'll keep this design for their premium models.

to be fair, my moto X screen cracked when it landed face down right on a tiny pebble on the pavement. that said, pushing with his body is not realistic. he can be angling the tool slightly which could account for differences. he needs a rig with a lever so he can push down straight down. finally: this test will only compare this kind of damage against a previous generation with the same setup.

Your comments say no, but I would say yes. From normal human hights this phone and most others won't break, IF the force is evenly distributed. But how often do you walk on a seamless concrete or glass surface to drop your phone on? Its not the hight most of the time that kills a screen, its the small, very hard stones on it. If there is a small, sharp rock in the way of your dropping phone in the wrong angle, it kills your phone even after a few centimeters, almost no matter what kind of screen you are using. Is a two phone comparison really representative? Not really, but if this test would produce similar forces on a scale of like 500 phones, it would help to affirm those clames of apple/corning/etc.. But with all glass, its just luck if you drop it and its survives. So no matter, a case and screen protector are the way to go, if you are at risk to drop your phone. One time or many times if you are clumsy.

Just a little physics Chapter, the force applied on a small area in this case is always going to be much greater, not an iPhone fan, but this situation is really rare. Generally when you drop your phone, the force is going to be distributed all across the phone, and it's very unlikely to break, a scratch at most maybe.
@JimmyRussle4 жыл бұрын
Its nearly impossible to create a drop test that can be duplicated over and over again so you can compare between phone models. By doing this test he can get the relative strength difference between the two screens. This test just confirms that the iPhone 12 will be very hard to break in day to day use. It would take a big drop or a freak accident to break this screen.
@benjaminralston70464 жыл бұрын
A point force test is the only real reliable test with verifiable and reproducible (if you have the money) results. The most likely scenario of breaking a screen in reality is dropping the phone on a corner, but that's extremely difficult to reproduce accurately and reliably measure. The point force test may not be realistic, but it does show how much stronger one screen is over the other.

@DerpyDoge the toughest the glass is the easier it is to crack under impact force, like dropping the phone. The scratching resistance is cool but will make people not use screen protectors and the glass will be way more vulnerable to cracking when dropped, apple now programs each display to the main board if replaced elsewhere outside apple a warning will always will pop up even if the display is original, making apple a lot of profit as these display are very expensive. They downsized the battery, removed the charger and headphones all just to save productions cost, they included in the box lightning to USB C cable, almost no one has USB C charger laying around this is just to force the user to buy a separate USB C power adapter or USB A cord. @mybigboiphilip69974 жыл бұрын
fun fact, the reason the ceramic screen has that radial pattern is due to the molecular structure of ceramics in general. the "platelets" move in a far more linear pattern due to the flex that pattern creates. glass on the other hand is not as structural due to the more scattered molecular pattern. for example Quartz is stronger than glass because the pattern is in a crystalline formation giving far more structural integrity to the crystal through millions of years of high pressure and molten temperatures within the earths surface. glass is made by melting basic silica and mixing it with other compounds in order to make a molded structure at a much hotter and faster rate than the Quartz. now, take high tech innovation and add the ceramic molecular structure and you get this incredibly tough material. win win basically. same reason why sapphire is so much more scratch resistant as well. only downfall with sapphire is that its just as brittle in a lot of ways as glass is, as sapphire is an impure compound of molecules.

No. The scratches can weaken the glass causing it break easier. However, the Mohs hardness is the same on broken glass.

Theoretically the scratches could hinder the crack test. Glass is more brittle when the structure is disrupted by scratches so if he scratches it prior to the crack test it could cause it to crack at a much lower resistance than if it was a fresh blemish free screen.

The force required to break was very cool. Everything else JRE did better. When using picks just a hair harder than the thing you are scratching (levels 6 & 7), you need to press hard in order to make the scratches visible. Otherwise the method is pointless for testing hardness. The 6 & 7 picks did scratch every surface on the iPhone but the scratches were so small you would've needed a microscope to see them. Press harder and the scratches become visible to the naked eye. A small diamond sliding on the screen won't meaningfully scratch it but apply some pressure and you will see the scratches.
@TheBasti054 жыл бұрын
The force is also pretty meaningless, as he doesn't consider the pressure it results in. 400 N is just a force that says nothing about how tough that glass is.

@@TheBasti05 If contact area stays the same, then higher force = higher pressure. The change is also linear so 2x force = 2x pressure etc. Yes this is a sample size of 1 and it's far from scientific or consistent but it's probably better than nothing.

A few inaccuracies with the video: - the measure of force for the iPhone 11 is not exact. You weren't recording with the device and you're pulling the number from a timestamp. The device also doesn't display the force measure precisely in real-time so very likely that the newtons required to shatter the iPhone 11 were a bit more than that. - You need to revisit the glass scratch test. Jerry Rig's video is still showing clear scratches at a level 6 with deeper grooves at a level 7. Fainter at 6 but unmistakably there. You might want to light the sequences differently in the future. Perhaps do it before you completely shatter the screen also!
@mactalk28714 жыл бұрын
Well, maybe JRE‘s hardness testing is faulty, we dont know which one is the faulty one, but I agree with the rest. Still its undeniable that the new screen is more resistant
@adamgasper58764 жыл бұрын
1. He can go frame by frame. He’d be able to grab the exact number. 2. Scratch depends on how hard it’s pressed. Jerry may press harder when he does the scratch test. If pressed hard enough, a 4 would eventually leave a scratch. 3. Stop trying to be a know it all. The man does this as a reviewer. He doesn’t need to be 100% accurate
@mattb.12364 жыл бұрын
@@adamgasper5876 1. The device does not display the force measure being applied in that very second with zero lag. Hence why it has a feature to record. Just grabbing the number from any frame provides an inexact measure. 2. Force plays a factor but not as much as you'd think as scratching actually requires more cutting through a material not simply pressing down to deform it and make a groove. Regardless JRE's test is conducted far more professionally. Lighting is just one aspect. The penny scratch test he did was silly. At the right angle, even pennies in your pockets can scratch 9H resistant materials. It's all about the sharpness of a corner and position & angle are imperative. 3. I provided constructive criticism to try and help him up the standards of his content. If you read it as me trying to be a know it all, I think you're still carrying with you some high school trauma. Don't worry buddy, it's all better now.
