The thing is, i personally have never really seen any advantage with mATX. Sure its smaller and you'd think its maybe cheaper because of that, but it almost never is so i dont know why you would take the slightly smaller board with less features for the same money over an normal sized ATX board.

ATX simply has more pcie slots and maybe 1 more m.2 slot compared to mATX, but since sli and crossfire is dead now so people wouldn't really need more than 2 pcie slots (say you got a sound card or something) and the extra space ATX takes is just wasted in most cases.

HF Z pretty much this. Matx has 4 ram slots. Can add a storage or 10g network card on the second pcie slot. There’s small matx cases without the sacrifice in cooling. Even OEMs like Dell are making smaller pc cases for their desktop lineup.

I am legitimately sad that there are just no good mATX boards anymore. I am using maximus 8 gene and I can't really upgrade in the same form-factor. And at the end of the day - I don't need all the PCI-E slots of ATX anyway, all I need is my GPU and Capture card in this machine, that's it.

Same problem here, building a video transcoding system in an mATX case. All I need is decent a VRM, and two expansion cards - GPU, and 10G NIC. Of course the only mATX x570 board would have a garbage VRM!

Mini-ITX is fine if you don't need any expansion slots, and that may work for many users, but to be stuck with a full ATX board if all you need is a capture card for an HTPC, or a raid controller for a NAS that really limits your options.

Just as a reference point: I've had my new system for 2 days. It's an MSI B450M Morta and a 3700x. All stock, it goes to 90W package power consumption, about 1.2V all core and 1.5V single core voltages (so maybe 75A for an 8 core), . BIOS flashback was great, got the mATX because I need the form factor, MSI because of Buildzoid and the M.2 layout. VMR doesn't get over 60°C, so totally chill. Pretty happy so far. Would have liked a 12 core but those things are out of stock for weeks. :D

The diy voice inside my head instantly said put this huge piece of aluminium on my circular saw table and cut the top part every 5mm. Then take 2 cheap 4cm fans (or one if two don't fit) and this thing will be fine.

The x570 pro 4 gets a set of two actual fins on the heatsink side facing the cpu so that gives you quite a large boost in surface area, so what results is this asrock board runs second in coolest temperature of everyones budget lineup surprisingly. You should be able to max out overclock a 3950x with decent airflow.

@@mijo1776 Yeah it will be fine. May run fairly warmer than most motherboards but it is far from the worst. Make sure the Cpu cooler is directing some of its airflow on the heatsink if you wish to output 200A from it. 150A and below can work well without airflow.

Sound cards might aswell be onboard, They're still inside a big metal box with a load of electrical noise, Modern onboards actually pretty good now but anyone that actually cares about audio buys an external DAC and amp. its really not worth having a pc 75% larger just for a soundcard when you can have better audio on a much smaller pc.

@@tomstech4390 First off, just because you have an external solution for your audio doesn't mean that it doesn't take up any space. Instead of having just one big box, you either have one big plus one small box or two big boxes depending on how much you care about audio quality. I don't see how this saves up any space considering that mATX cases are not that much bigger than ITX cases since those still need to fit hard drives, a power supply and a GPU that's bigger than the ITX board itself. Second, external DAC/amps are not safe from the PC's electrical noise, because - guess what - it is connected to the PC by an ELECTRICAL CABLE. The USB 2 standard that most external DAC/amps use nowadays was not designed to be able to deliver "clean audio" like most DAC manufacturers are trying to sell. The only way to completely isolate an audio device from the PC would be to use an optical connection. Funny thing is, most motherboards still have an output for a TOSLINK cable, but it's physical potential as an optical link is limited by the SPDIF standard whose bandwidth requirement is pretty limited. However due to the advent of HDMI, manufacturers have not seen fit unfortunately to update the SPDIF standard or to create a new communications standard to use over TOSLINK cables to (out)match HDMI audio. Now if we stick to electrical connections, the only way to reduce the noise is by improving the motherboard's PCB, because electrical noise is a symptom of electrical interference between the copper cables embedded into the motherboard. On that front, the advent of PCIe 4 might make a noticeable improvement, since the standard actually forces motherboard manufacturers to improve their PCBs in order to meet its signal integrity and bandwidth requirements. We'll see how this goes. Another issue with external audio is latency/synchronization. Now this is kind of a mixed bag, because I've experienced synchronization issues with onboard audio as well (defective motherboard), and sometimes it can be an issue with the content (using the exact same USB DAC, some games have out of sync audio and video while others don't), but it is generally a pretty hard thing to overcome with an external device your PC has very little to no control over, an issue that is not present on PCIe extensions. All of this to say that the choice of using an internal PCIe sound card or an external USB DAC/amp boils down to PERSONAL PREFERENCE as neither solution is truly superior to the other one. The reason you see so many USB DAC/amps compared to PCIe sound cards is because most audio companies simply don't have the know-how to make a PCIe extension, "noise reduction" is just a marketing gimmick. The only step up in terms of audio quality would be to hook up the PC to an AV receiver, a solution which comes with its own bag of issues. -_-

@@smilingbandit6900 That was kind of what I was hinting at. ;) The only issue with it is that DisplayPort is way better than HDMI at handling refresh rates above 60 (even on the newest versions) which means that you have to connect your GPU to your monitor with a DisplayPort cable and use a second HDMI cable to connect the GPU to the AV receiver (hifi equipment with DisplayPort input/output/passthrough do not exist unfortunately), which can be a hassle to configure if it doesn't work out of the box and your refresh rate will be capped at what the receiver can handle (usually 120Hz even if you have a 144Hz+ monitor).

I have this motherboard, but only running a Ryzen 5 3600 @4.1 - no issues at all. If the only issue is heat, what’s wrong with installing a block on it and running some liquid through it? I’ve been thinking of doing this soon in order to prep for 4th gen Ryzen. As far as the LEDs, I didn’t even think it would be possible for anyone to have any sort of issue - I can see them perfectly when needed. However, my chipset fan is a piece of shit - I already ordered a new one to replace because the bearing started to go out. I don’t mind any of these issues, for me it’s actually fun finding solutions and this video is very informative

People are buying cheap x570 boards because B450 BIOS updates are a nightmare, and some people can't follow BIOS flash directions. I actually recommend the Phantom 4 to people using a 3700x.

I had that blindingly bright LED issue you mentioned, and the manual mentions this feature. Annoying, but I'm glad there's something for me to point to.

I put a 3950x on this board and it's working just fine! You sir are incorrect, the vram seems to handle it okay 👌 The heat sink runs cold to the touch. That being said, The chokes are actually 115°C under load 😬. Exactly how bad that is that seeing how they're actually just coils?

@@drayzen9678 I've actually seen them use better VRMs. They are forced to use high end components to fit better power in less size. For ATX they use the worst cheapest parts and then slap 10 on them on there. Then they can claim its a 10 phase for marketing even though it's trash.

A thermal pad on the ferrite coils and the heatsink reduces the power loss caused by the increase of the resistance of the winding coil at high temperatures. The resistive Q factor in the design of the ferrite coils is crucial in increasing the coil performance with low heat losses. Running 2 coils in parallel with gate drivers that control the timing switching halves the coil current reducing voltages drops and heat caused by the coil Q factor resistance. Because of the very low Vcore voltage around 1 volt at 200 watts TDP the current would be approx 200 amper plus the heat losses. Designing efficient power stages at very high current rates above 100 ampers is complicated because of the voltage drops of the circuit on coils and the PCB copper traces.

I was relatively happy running this board in my build, till last night. One of the high side mosfet on the board blew up last night. Sparks, smoke and everything. I wasn't even using my PC... Great board 10/10 recommended

Also, the MOSFET with more "RDS-on" connected to the ground only closes the inductive circuit during the "off state" period on the disconnection of the +12 volts MOSFET. The current is much less because most of the energy is consumed by the CPU and the rest of the energy remaining on the ferrite coil is discharged and transferred by the back pulse to the load again (CPU). In very low-power PWM stages, the MOSFET connected to the ground is replaced by a switching diode because is cheaper. To improve energy efficiency at very high current loads a MOSFET switcher is much more efficient than a diode because of the high forward voltage drop on diodes also the regulation voltage at 1 volt and high load currents of 150 ampers average enforce the use of a MOSFET for the coil discharge to ground. Having a PWM controller with more individual phases doesn`t mean better efficiency with more TDP output.

You were right, the Heatsink (heatsoak) does have a huge dead zone. And the whole VRM area gets very hot even at idle. Also the 4 Debug LED's are all red, and they don't light up on failure, they light up on success, so you have them blinking on and off in a weird pattern (all 4 on first power, then top 2, then none, then bottom 2) on bootup. Then they turn off. The whole reason I bought this board was Intel LAN - and the 8 USB ports, 8 SATA ports, 3 M.2's, PCI-e 4.0 support - I got the ATX version. It was the best I could find that did not skimp on stuff for $150. (Maybe i missed something) - I paired it with a 6-core i got for less than the board. I think the VRM will be OK but now I know they skimped on that instead. And the 5k-hour capacitors, that's disappointing. I was hoping it would be 10k. Maybe it can be recapped _WHEN_ it dies. I like my stuff to last forever ideally, It had been a very long time of me not upgrading. My order of manufacturer preference is, I would pick Asus first, Asrock next, Gigabyte last, and not even touch MSI. In terms of past history, the UEFI layout, price to feature ratio, and quality control. But Asus's boards are either too expensive or too cut-down this time for X570 though. Certainly a B-450 mATX is a better choice for most people... I kinda have buyers remorse but theres always gonna be somethin I don't like. The price of these boards is largely beyond my means so I make do.

If you don't want to have a headache, there are a lot of mini ITX options that are "overbuilt". If you want mATX, the B450M Mortar (Titanium) should still do the trick if you aren't doing massive OC and have some airflow. I run my 3700x on it (at stock at the moment) and it never goes above 50°C VRM temps (in a 30°C room) with 2 slow running 120mm intake fans and one 120mm exhaust fan. No PCIe 4.0 of course, but BIOS flashback, 2 PCIe M.2 slots (3.0 / 2.0), decent BIOS support so far. See also the google doc spreadsheet of the AM4 VRM ratings.

Another unique VRM is the Asrock z77 Extreme 4. It's has a fake 8phase. I guess they call'em D-PAK MOSFETS .It runs in a 8+2+1+1 configuration, Using a ISL6367 PWM with 5 Intersil ISL6612's (4 for the vCore and 1 for the iGPU) ASRock is also doubling its phases, however the issues here is that they are linking two phases to each other, so it is a big 4 phase VRM made to look like a 8 phase VRM with added inductors. The ISL6367 is a so called high-tech anolog PWM, when Asrock labeled it a digital PWM. Its not a bad board. It still running my 3770K at 4.6GHz and mem at 2GHz all day long since 2013. The z77 Extreme6 is equally unique, it has a PLX8605 which expands a single PCI-E 1x into 3 PCI-E 1x, thus they go to the two 1x slots and then the Broadcom NIC.

But is nothing wrong with the VRM design using MOSFET gate drivers with 2 coils outputs per phase. Doubling the number of coils running in parallel reduces the heat improving efficiency. One of the problems is the heat loss on the winding of the coils. Using coils in parallel is the solution to reduce the power loss caused by the Q factor resistance on the coil winding. Forget the "RDS-on" resistance differences because the switching current is below MOSFET's safe operation. Most of the heat comes from the coils because is the switching inductive reactance of the coil that drops the voltage increasing the output current on the PWM regulation from Vcc 12V to CPU Vcore conversion.

Ok, bad idea time. Let's say one were to pick another low-side FET in that same pkg, match Vgs (thresh), appropriate Vds and Id max limits, equivalent or better Td(on) time but most importantly, one with a better Rds(on) and swap them from those footprints, paying some attention to the new part height vs heatsink/TIM. How bad of an idea would this be? Are there important things one couldn't account for? For ex: Is it common to "tune" the fet drivers or feedback loop based on the original parts? What are the chances that circuit is dependent on that specific Rds(on) value?

MSI B450M Mortar, Mortar Max and Mortar Titanium. Overclocking will still be no go. Comparing these against Asrocks X570M motherboard, it's 4 + 2 good phases vs 8 + 2 crap phases and MSI have the better heatsink. The real disappointment comes with Asrocks motherboard being an X570M board aint any better than a B450M board in VRM capability, X are supposed to be the enthusiast series but there is nothing enthusiastic about Asrocks X570M. Hope that B550 comes with better mATX options.

Going to start a new build soon (upgrading from Phenom II 1090t), I originally was going to go 3700x with this mobo. But after some thought I feel it might just be a better use of my money to go for a 3600 and a b450m, I have no idea what to go for though! Anyone know what my best choices are for a b450m? - I would also consider ITX if there are better options in that form factor.

About 2 months ago my system started to have very frequent WHEA crashes. I have an AMD 5900X and AsRock X570M Pro4 with EVGA RTX3080 FTW3 and PSU Corsair RM1000x. After I installed this GPU I notice these crashes. Reading on forums sounds like it is a CPU issue. But yesterday I took my CPU and the RAM and went to a friend that has a Gigabyte Aourus Elite AX X570 with a 5800X, RTX3080 LHR from MSI and PSU Corsair RM1000x. I installed my CPU, my RAM and my SSD with Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 and I run the PC for at least 2h - 2:30h. NO CRASH! The systems have similar components, only the difference is the MB and manufacture of the GPU. On my PC with EGVA RTX3080 FTW3 and MB AsRock X570M Pro4 is crashing in main menu, Profile, aircraft showcase between 10 and 30 minutes! Is crazy! What I can conclude is this piece of crap of MB is the main issue! Today I will do a last test and I'm opening and RMA to return the MB and to buy a better one. This MB came directly with BIOS version 3.00 which supports only 5000 series of CPUs.

Won't use the space in it so it'll be empty, can't afford a custom loop, obviously no intrest in dual GPU's in SLI (which I also can't afford). My case is fine with great airflow, has 6 fans and a 240mm radiator (AIO CPU Cooler) in my micro atx case. Just the perfect size IMO but guess I'm one of the few that think that.

glad i watched this vid. according to newegg ratings, asrock b550M has issues with the intel NIC and thunderboldt add on card. btw, if you miss usb ports you could get a 4 port usb 3.0 card for $10 or a better one with 5GB/s paralell bandwidth compared to the mb breakout usb bus. doesnt work on itx though. 2 LAN ports make sense for teaming and networks which devide IP traffic from internal (NAS) traffic. how high end and cookie cutter mainboard makers add a bunch of display output option assuming that users want to install APUs is beyond me.

Great vid man! Whelp there goes that board from my list of possible boards. Can i get your opinion since i know you tested both B450 Msi Mortar Titanium and x370 Msi Xpower Titanium. If the Xpower only costs 30 more USD which would you prefer, for a 3800x no OC?

I don't know how far apart the mounting screws are on the Pro 4's giant aluminum heatsink, but I wonder if it'd be better to swap its heatsink out for something else. Enzotech made some VRM heatsinks and its smaller size would also allow some more airflow. Another possibility might be salvaging a heatsink from another motherboard. I'm a little uncomfortable with this mobo running a 3950x stock.

Interesting video, i'm looking to build a ryzen system in an mATX case (gamemax kamikaze pro), and this is the only x570 mATX board i can find, i'm planning to get a 3900x, but i won't be OCing it, (i got a Corsair H100i 240 for cpu cooling, plus the 4 fans that come with the case (3x 120 front, 1 120 exhaust) should give a lot of air flow), but after this, i'm wondering if i should look into an itx board, or wait for the B550 matx boards. As i said, i won't be overclocking (not that tech savy), but i really don't want my motherboard to have issues due to over-heating.

unfortunately, mATX will only have decent B550 motherboards probably. so, mATX crowd will have to miss some nice extra features of the X570 mobos..

@Actually Hardcore Overclocking. Can you look at the Hardware Unboxed budget review? The Asrock and Asus did very well in VRM thermals. Where you gave these Asrock boards a terrible review. I think it may come down to the Heatsink, not the eleborate vrm design. This ran a 3900x with PBO and Auto OC. The ASRock X570 PHANTOM GAMING 4 is on sale now. Might be an great deal on a x570

Building a video transcoding system in an mATX case. I need is decent a VRM, and two (3) PCIe slots - GPU, and 10G NIC. Of course the only mATX x570 board would have a garbage VRM. Mini-ITX is fine if you don't need any expansion or more than 2 DIMM slots, and that may work for many users, but to be stuck with a full ATX board if all you need is a capture card for an HTPC, or a raid controller for a NAS really limits your options.

I was going to buy a budget B450M board (mATX build) with 3900X 12 core CPU...Intention is not to overclock, which you said means this board should be fine in terms of the heatsink over VRM; as you'd expect, for the only X570 mATX board around...My intention for the build, with 32GB RAM is centrally built around an 8 port blackmagic capture card (which will switch between 6+ video streams and record 1 stream to a SSD)...and also an undisclosed GPU - as I havent decided what I really need for the GPU just yet...(possibly the 1660 or the 2060 GTX) Video capture is only 6 x streams @ 1080p/30, video output requires nothing fancy either, 1 monitor (possibly 2) to 1080p/30....What are your thoughts for the mobo; this X570 pro4, or a B450M from Asus/Gigabyte/MSI?

A 10 dollar heat sink kit on amazon fixes any vrm heat sink, my b350 runs an oc'ed 3700x fine, just cover the thing in 1x1cm finned heat sinks.

Ah, damn. And at present, the only reason I was even considering this motherboard, was because it was *the only* mATX AMD board that seems to have an intel NIC, or even just a non-Realtek NIC. NDI encoding is basically pretty demanding for a quality LAN, and the reason I'm having to consider a platform upgrade is because the realtek nic in my present living room system just isn't having any of it. But I'd also want to reserve the right to (when pricing makes sense) stick a ryzen 9 in there.

Really depends from model and price range you pick. I am perfectly happy with x370 Taichi and Professional Gaming. But it's 200+ bracket. But some lower end boards are complete trash. Regarding BIOS, I have nothing to complain really. I have first gen chips.

With Asus GB MSI brands x570 MBs they actually let you run 16 cores CPUs properly just because it's x570 and it's supposed to work properly with an equally high end CPU, even if you decide to go with their lower end x570s; while with Asrock, you know what, Asrock is kinda correct doing this, whoever buys this board is never supposed to even dream of running a 16 core on it because they should know what kind of board it is despite the x570 chipset.

Dear Bullzoid. Do you have a couple Ryzen 3000 samples there? Can you please do us LM enthusiast a favor?, can you check if the IHS on yours are perfectly flat or not? My 3900X temps are 78c with an H115i Pro AIO with 4 fans and pump in extreme mode. 86c under silent, balanced pump settings (that under CB20). I'm considering lapping mine but I would like to know in advance if you can tell me if you find some general inconsistencies or if all your samples are super flat. Much appreciated. This for the sake of sucking more heat from the chiplets to be able to OC a little more.

There is not a chance that the IHS is flat out of the box, if you take a close loot at yours, you might see how especially the edges are higher than the middle of the IHS that has been the case for zen/zen+ as well and will continue to be so because of the extra manufacturing required to make each individual IHS flat.

@@CarbonPanther So I did. Shaved some 5c form it. To my surprise, the IHS had a bump on the center, where the IO die is located. The initial contact was poor, now is much better.
