The UK's situation in regards to EU trade negotiations is quite inexcusable. After the Brexit vote, New Zealand offered to lend the UK its experienced trade negotiators, who are particularly talented at negotiating from inferior or disadvantageous positions, to help the UK negotiate a trade deal with the EU. Such an agreement was also in NZ's own interests, as much of its exports to Europe were routed and distributed through the UK, so a UK-EU FTA would make it easier for NZ to continue its European trade by re-exporting through the UK using existing arrangements and infrastructure. Unfortunately, it became quickly apparent that the British Government was a disorganised mess over Brexit and an FTA with the EU was a remote prospect, alongside NZ's chances of piggy-backing off the agreement (which it would have rewarded with a favourable UK-NZ FTA). Jarred by the endless uncertainty over Brexit, NZ has since begun its own FTA negotiations with the EU and, although marred by the EU's rampant agricultural protectionism, it seems like those talks are faring much better than the British ones in large part because NZ is very clear about what it wants from the agreement and where it's willing to compromise in order to obtain that. The UK, however, seems to know nothing except that it definitely wants an FTA, but is uncertain as to what it actually wants and has little idea what it might actually offer the EU in return for those unspecified demands. At this rate, NZ will be finished by the UK, and will probably offer it's trade negotiators again out of pity this time, rather than for mutual enrichment.
