I once heard a mockingbird imitate a Dusky Seaside Sparrow, some fifteen years after the Duskies were officially declared extinct. This indicates that some songs are learned from the parent birds and passed down through generations. A type of bird music culture, if you will.
@marksavage76029 жыл бұрын
Ok, already being amazed by Mockingbirds, and having a rescued one for a companion, I am stunned at your comment. To think that they had mimicked a bird that is now extinct and that song or call was passed down is just incredibly interesting.
@groomedtodie9 жыл бұрын
Mark Savage well they copy what they hear almost indiscriminately, so of course they'd keep copying older mocking birds with different songs. They don't care if it's an extinct bird or a car alarm. I even got one to copy my whistle as a kid.

Axel Bushing maybe the dusky seaside sparrow isn't actually extinct, we just don't know where to find them

What a lot of people don't realize: If you hear a lone mockingbird singing at night, and begin walking or riding a bicycle away from it - in any direction - as you get to the edge of the ordinal bird's range - you will begin hearing another mockingbird!! Go away from this one (again, in any direction) and you will pick up another! In the quiet night hours when no other birds are vocalizing, the mockingbirds come out and form a network that blankets the land. I think it's way more than individuals staking out territory or looking for mates...

We recently moved to Washington from California and the one thing I miss so much is the songs of the mockingbirds in our yard. I'd wake up in the middle of the night smiling and think, what in the heck am I smiling about and then I'd hear them and know. I don't know that I'd call them aggressive, but they are definitely protective of the babies! If their nests/babies are safe, they never tended to cause any trouble--at least not the ones in our yard. Also, depending on the sounds of your neighborhood, their songs vary. The songs our guys sang seemed more flowing and less choppy than this one, but this one is beautiful too. Thanks so much for sharing!

Marko Barrows They are Americas Lyre bird, but they stick to birds and avoid man made sounds. Bless them.

We've got one that keeps us entertained. He perches on the top of our tallest tree and sounds off. We mock each other, though my skills pale in comparison. Blue jays like to rule the yard, but the mocking birds scares them off using their own squawk. It's hilarious.

What always impresses me is the variety in their song.

It’s so amazing how many singing sounds that the mockingbird pushes out...it has to be a significant sign of a message that’s presented other than territorial 😊🦅🦉birds !

when I went to radioman "A" school in Bainbridge md (navy) in early spring of 1971 i lived in an apartment (with my wife) out in the country along palski hwy close to havre de grace, md. (Aberdeen to the southwest) .... when i heard a constant, everchanging noise coming from outside .... i went out to see what the commotion was about ... and here there was a mockingbird showing off like crazy from the t.v. antenna on top of the house. just like this video you're watching ... he mimicked every bird in the area, and then made up some on his own. i would stand there for a long time listening to his repertoire of unusual songs .... i was totally amazed because i'm from northern ohio and have never heard this character before. i was a lucky guy living there in md. because we had frogs, snakes, turtles many other types of birds in a pretty untouched area next to a creek.

Great video! Very informative. I look forward to the return of my mockingbird in the spring. He sings all night outside my bedroom window, and during the day he sits on an electric pole watching me work in my garden.

We had one that would sing at those hours. One day, way back in the 80's a neighbor opened up his door and yelled at it to shut up.

Fascinating, both the bird song and the human comments. Now I appreciate the title of To Kill a Mockingbird because I understand why, in fact, a person would be so annoyed they would want to kill one. The book is all about learning to have compassion for annoying human beings. For all those whose badly needed night's sleep has been ruined by a mockingbird (or an annoying human being), I pray for future quiet nights.

I have this pleasant visitor in my frontyard. And especially took notice, when my mom passed. I noticed it three days after was looking at me thru my window accross the rooftop. I love it. I just wished this video was edited to remove the sounds of the motor vehicles engines passing by...
