Cicked on video randomly in despair of not getting proper explanation of Spinoza`s concepts. Now I feel blessed to have found this video so as this is the only one that actually broke the wall between me and Spinoza`s philosophy. I`m honestly grateful to Dr. Sreekumar Nellickappilly for this lecture

35:41 The major criticism of Spinoza's conception of attributes lies in the fact that he conceived multiplicity for attributes which by definition is infinite. Only the finite things can be enumerated not the infinite. The infinite is one, so there cannot be infinite "attributes".

Thank you so much sir. I read the Ethics and it was revealing but I was not aware of Descartes' arguments which were not elaborated much in the Ethics but refuted by Spinoza multiple times. This lecture shone the light on that and made my understanding of Spinoza firmer. Thanks a lot. Eager for Lec 12.

at 18:50 you say that anything infinite cannot be created, by definition which means the infinite world is the infinite god. Spinoza was splendid.

thanks for such an initiative. but i have a question: attribute is basically an essence say all cow have cowness etc but this cowness is different from carness or penness then why these essences are not considered different and rather unity of substance is considered?? please do reply thanks.

shashank tiwari For Spinoza an attribute is not the essence of an entity. For him Substance has infinite attributes (infinite essence, which is not logical). This is because, the Substance is infinite and an infinite entity according to him has infinite attributes. Again, out of these, only two are comprehensible to the human mind; extension and thought. carness or penness are not attributes. An attribute is the quality by which the human mind comprehensa Substance. In short, yiue identification of essences with attributes is not correct in Spinoza's framework. To appreciate this you may need to also keep in mind that for Spinoza the ideal model followed is geometrical, which deals wit infinity.

@EinsteinKnowedIt4 жыл бұрын
As God is a thinking thing then the soul is an idea in the thinking thing arising from the reality of a thing existing in nature.

@Johnson Mathew Spinoza in his chapter On the Improvement of the Understanding dives at length into real standards required in order that we can even being arriving at an adequate idea and he heaps even more requirements before we can even discern a true idea from falsity.
