Sweet mother of goodness. I have a Model 3 performance that I bought new a couple months ago and just completed an AL to TX back to AL road trip that was 1500 miles long. 2 people, probably 200+lbs of luggage, rain, and 80+mph on roads (TX has fast speed limits), and I got 250-260 miles on a charge at highway speeds over the course of the trip. The trip was 95%+ highway. ~268 wh/mile average. How are you over 300+ wh/mi? Wow. I do run tire pressure at 48PSI, but shouldn’t be that much difference. I like seeing the traffic cones. I like knowing my car sees them in roadwork zones and it has helped me out when reversing near them in multiple scenarios. It does not use any more computational power to display them. Autopilot has to see them and process their existence whether or not they’re displayed. The few pixels shown on the center screen aren’t using *any* more power than if they were not displayed. They are vector-based images, which, in the case of the center display, means that if they are not shown, they’re just replaced with a vector image of a dark spot. In other words, the blank space around the car on each side of the lane is a vector image in the same way that the traffic cone display is, so to the computer a vector image is displayed whether or not it appears as a cone. The autopilot system still sees and processes the cone whether or not it’s displayed for the car to avoid them and that is what uses the computational power.
@ronb4633
@ronb4633 4 жыл бұрын
May I ask what you mean by highway speeds. Following the posted speed limit or? Kyle has a radar detector mounted in his windshield for a reason I think. Also 48psi is certainly a bit high over the 42-45 recommend range but I understand that. I wouldn't want to do that is this bad rain though.

Hard to imagine a pre-pandemic world in which that was an oddity. I'm also so interested in the charging speeds. Intriguing that you could've likely done this trip faster in an ID.4 or something given the Tesla infrastructure and crowds in this area rarely had you pulling even 125. The location is right off 95, and I have never seen more than about 5 stalls used. Now, one you didn't visit on this trip (but mentioned the town) is in Greenville, SC. That only has 8, and it is frequently very full.

I have the M3P+ with the PUO as well. My efficiency was in the 300-350 wh/m range. Put the Fast Wheels EV01+ wheels on, with the aero inserts, it will improve range by 10%. Would love to see you do a video about that and compare. The ride is smoother with 18" on, and acceleration is faster too. If you want even more range, use the Michelin Energy Saver tires and make it the roadtrip wheel/tire combo! (18x8.5, 35mm and 70mm fits with no spacers on the PUO)

Especially if you live in a cold part of the country. Then batteries are even worse charge times. Plus their whole trip is filled with planning and worrying about where and how long to charge. Seems exhausting. I take about 10-15 road trips a year. I really wanted to get one, but decided it's not practical unless I have two cars.
@dougowt
@dougowt 5 жыл бұрын
Collin it’s not all about planning and there’s little to worry about. The video is just trying to give you a very thorough explanation of what and why they do things. And you may wish to take the same trip differently. It’s also one of the worst times to travel on one of the worst routes. The vast majority of journeys you wouldn’t think twice. You’d load up, put in your route and go. And when you do stop, you often meet interesting people and I’ve made a few friends along the way. I would find going to a filling station a pain these days, especially on my commute.

The I-95 corridor is all V2. V1 are the early unlit stalls that provide about 110 kW. I don’t think there are any V1 stalls remaining in the US. Savannah was originally V1 back in the day. It’s definitely due for a V3 upgrade or even an expansion now. V2 got an upgrade last year increasing speed from 120 kW to 150 kW on almost all with a few exceptions.

Love your rant about the missing charging capacity, but I guess you're looking too narrow. They obviously have trouble to ramp up the production of the V3 components, but have already a good running production of the V2 components. They are installing V3 superchargers, for example in the trans canada highway, which had zero superchargers before. I think the issue with building new locations is, you need to find a place, rent the space, get proper electrical connections for like 1 MW installed by the grid company and then you can start doing the construction work. Extending a V1 supercharger a bit on the other hand doesn't require any of the steps before, but offer the same amenities for the drivers. Since you don't install an electrical connection exactly to the needs you can probably get away to draw some more power from the grid. This way you can get more throughput to the supercharger network without a long lead time. I think they currently install as fast as they can, and the paperwork and third party companies have trouble to keep up the pace - since money isn't really an issue, after so many new cars have been sold.

Mine did the same 'freaking out' a few times Dec24 on just a 60km run to a newish 250Kw SC. The weather was foggy and the wipers went ballistic. Yet the windshield was clear. The sky looked a monotone grey so that's likely why AP flipped out. Interesting vid. Thanks much for sharing. I'm considering an EV for the next new ride, but this lingering concern for traveling longer distances - soooo many stops. And waiting 20 minutes in the queue is hard to comprehend as acceptable. About twice a month, I make a 550 mile (1100 total) trip. Currently 8 hours (one way) - would become 10-12hrs depending of Long Range+ vs. Std Range choices. A lot to consider.

I have the same issue but worse. When I send it to leave at 8 AM it is done at 4:30 AM at 100%. I sent a bug report and backed it down to 95 if I need it at 100%

Just want to thank Kyle for making these EV road trip videos. I do alot of long distance road trips and I see that EV's still have a long way to go before they can meet ICE cars' efficiency on time/distance. Perhaps in 5 years or so.

I think faster charging (V3) and charging curves to allow for fast charging to 80% are to important things. We’ll see but I agree, we are a few years away from it really not taking much longer than ICE

Can US Teslas not use standard CCS public chargers? Here in the UK, Teslas can charge on any chargers, so, you can skip the supercharger queue. European Teslas have type 2/CCS sockets.

the traffic cones displayed on the screen is realistically not a bad idea because it tells the computer when it travelling through a potential construction zone. This basically tells the car to travel carefully when its in autopilot. Also it helps people that cant see very well while travelling at night.

Driving through South Carolina is brutal. 2 lanes per direction is ridiculous and takes the tiniest problem to screw both directions. I drove through that HEAVY rain on a trip on Sunday (central FL to north FL) and the range huuuurt. Average 240-260 wh/mi but the rain put me at 360. If you have some time to kill while in FL, text me.

We took our 2019 X standard range from Wake Forest to Lawrence KS over two days. We had zero charging issues on super chargers, there was one in Independence MO that two of them had electric tape on them but there was an open spot. I pretty much followed the in dash trip tool after checking it on ABRP. Other than one instance between Bristol and Nashville was that it told us to go to Nashville and arrive at -25 % even though there was one between the two. We stopped there and were fine.

The issue with AP in the rain is probably due to condensation. At least on your recording you can see condensation patterns were your wipers meet. The area which is hit by both wipers and therefore wiped more often is clearer. A fogged up windscreen would drive me nuts, how can you drive without being bothered by it? Turn the front windscreen defroster on, this should activate the ap camera housing heater as well.

WHAT WAS TIME? At star of day plan was 845am to 11pm so 14 hours to go 820 miles (normal gas car takes 12 hours based on MapQuest going 60mph), but it seems it took to 3am (??) so total of 18 hours or 6 hours more than gas car. Or am I wrong. Yes some was traffic delay.... Sigh. Up in the Midwest off the freeways we have less Tesla chargers. But good on you for sharing info.

You have tons of chargers in the Midwest. The traffic was the largest contributor to traffic (hours and hours added because of it) I normally do this trip and it takes about an hour longer than a gas car
