Sweet mother of goodness. I have a Model 3 performance that I bought new a couple months ago and just completed an AL to TX back to AL road trip that was 1500 miles long. 2 people, probably 200+lbs of luggage, rain, and 80+mph on roads (TX has fast speed limits), and I got 250-260 miles on a charge at highway speeds over the course of the trip. The trip was 95%+ highway. ~268 wh/mile average. How are you over 300+ wh/mi? Wow. I do run tire pressure at 48PSI, but shouldn’t be that much difference. I like seeing the traffic cones. I like knowing my car sees them in roadwork zones and it has helped me out when reversing near them in multiple scenarios. It does not use any more computational power to display them. Autopilot has to see them and process their existence whether or not they’re displayed. The few pixels shown on the center screen aren’t using *any* more power than if they were not displayed. They are vector-based images, which, in the case of the center display, means that if they are not shown, they’re just replaced with a vector image of a dark spot. In other words, the blank space around the car on each side of the lane is a vector image in the same way that the traffic cone display is, so to the computer a vector image is displayed whether or not it appears as a cone. The autopilot system still sees and processes the cone whether or not it’s displayed for the car to avoid them and that is what uses the computational power.
@ronb46334 жыл бұрын
May I ask what you mean by highway speeds. Following the posted speed limit or? Kyle has a radar detector mounted in his windshield for a reason I think. Also 48psi is certainly a bit high over the 42-45 recommend range but I understand that. I wouldn't want to do that is this bad rain though.

Especially if you live in a cold part of the country. Then batteries are even worse charge times. Plus their whole trip is filled with planning and worrying about where and how long to charge. Collin it’s not all about planning and there’s little to worry about. The video is just trying to give you a very thorough explanation of what and why they do things. And you may wish to take the same trip differently. It’s also one of the worst times to travel on one of the worst routes. The vast majority of journeys you wouldn’t think twice. You’d load up, put in your route and go. And when you do stop, you often meet interesting people and I’ve made a few friends along the way. I would find going to a filling station a pain these days, especially on my commute.

The I-95 corridor is all V2. V1 are the early unlit stalls that provide about 110 kW. I don’t think there are any V1 stalls remaining in the US. Savannah was originally V1 back in the day. Love your rant about the missing charging capacity, but I guess you're looking too narrow. They obviously have trouble to ramp up the production of the V3 components, but have already a good running production of the V2 components. They are installing V3 superchargers, for example in the trans canada highway, which had zero superchargers before. I think the issue with building new locations is, you need to find a place, rent the space, get proper electrical connections for like 1 MW installed by the grid company and then you can start doing the construction work. Extending a V1 supercharger a bit on the other hand doesn't require any of the steps before, but offer the same amenities for the drivers. Since you don't install an electrical connection exactly to the needs you can probably get away to draw some more power from the grid. This way you can get more throughput to the supercharger network without a long lead time. I think they currently install as fast as they can, and the paperwork and third party companies have trouble to keep up the pace - since money isn't really an issue, after so many new cars have been sold.

We had zero charging issues on super chargers, there was one in Independence MO that two of them had electric tape on them but there was an open spot. I pretty much followed the in dash trip tool after checking it on ABRP. Other than one instance between Bristol and Nashville was that it told us to go to Nashville and arrive at -25 % even though there was one between the two. We stopped there and were fine.

damn 14 hours? ... I drove from FL to NYC in that amount of time. I really wanna get a Tesla but it looks like road trips REALLY take a long time

It was the traffic that added 90% of the time, not the charging

The issue with AP in the rain is probably due to condensation. At least on your recording you can see condensation patterns were your wipers meet. The area which is hit by both wipers and therefore wiped more often is clearer. A fogged up windscreen would drive me nuts, how can you drive without being bothered by it? Turn the front windscreen defroster on, this should activate the ap camera housing heater as well.

WHAT WAS TIME? At star of day plan was 845am to 11pm so 14 hours to go 820 miles (normal gas car takes 12 hours based on MapQuest going 60mph), but it seems it took to 3am (??) so total of 18 hours or 6 hours more than gas car. Or am I wrong. Yes some was traffic delay.... Sigh. Up in the Midwest off the freeways we have less Tesla chargers. But good on you for sharing info.

You have tons of chargers in the Midwest. The traffic was the largest contributor to traffic (hours and hours added because of it) I normally do this trip and it takes about an hour longer than a gas car
